Germany extends nuclear power in energy crisis

Russia’s disruption of energy supplies scuppers Germany’s plan to exit nuclear power this year.

Image source: ReutersGerman Chancellor Olaf Scholz ordered that Germany’s three remaining nuclear power stations continue to operate until mid-April. This was in response to the energy crisis caused by Russia’s invasion and occupation of Ukraine. After the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe in Japan in 2011, former chancellor Angela Merkel decided to phase it out. However, gas prices have risen since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. This disruption to Russia’s massive oil and gas exports to Europe. In August, Russia cut off gas from Germany via the Nord Stream 1 underground pipeline. Germany has been relying on Russian gas so much that it is now struggling to keep enough gas reserves for winter. Germany is now struggling to maintain sufficient reserves for the winter after relying so heavily on Russian gas. France sends Germany gas for the first time in crisisChancellor Scholz’s third coalition partner, Liberal Free Democrats (FDP), welcomed Scholz’s decision to keep nuclear power in the mix. The remaining three nuclear plants are Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 & Emsland. The Social Democrat (SPD), chancellor, welcomed Scholz’s decision to send gas to Germany for the first time amid crisis.
