‘My Life as a Rolling Stone” shines a spotlight on the Rolling Stones in a stadium-worthy way
(CNN). “The Beatles: Get back” set a high standard for musical nostalgia. But “My Life As a Rolling Stone,” however, breaks down the band members into their own hours with extensive access to the remaining members and a who’s-who of rock voices as the chorus. Although you may not always get what you want, Rolling Stones fans will find this to be a good alternative. “My Life As a Rolling Stone” is a docuseries that interviews Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood. The opening installment, which is dedicated to Jagger, describes the group as “a linkbetween the counterculture of 1960s and the commercial modern age.” There’s biographical material that focuses on their musical influences. One observer says Jagger, the clear leader and “brand manger,” studied Little Richard to learn how to command a stage. Jon Bon Jovi noted that this included the creation of the rock stadium experience. “Mick Jagger performing as seen in ‘My Life as a Rolling Stone. “Mick Jagger performing, as seen in ‘My Life as a Rolling Stone. “Wood is portrayed as the glue that kept the Stones together after replacing Mick Taylor in mid-1970s. He put aside his ego to deal with his higher maintenance partners. The final installment is dedicated to Charlie Watts, the drummer who died in 2021. “The best drummer England has ever produced,” Richards says.Executive producer Steve Condie and the four directors don’t gloss over controversies and excesses associated with the Stones, but the emphasis is clearly to deliver a celebration of their artistry as well as longevity as still-rocking septuagenarians. Those decades in the spotlight and the ample footage associated with them yield dividends for the filmmakers if not always the members themselves, who concede that the unrelenting attention is something of a double-edged sword. Jagger speaks out about the pressures of fame and says that “some people can take it, while some people can’t.” It’s a bit like a pact. “My Life As a Rolling Stone” encourages a degree in sympathy for these devils but mostly a sense appreciation for decades of rock wizardry that, with apologies for the song, doesn’t need any introduction. Epix premieres “My Life As a Rolling Stone”, Aug. 7.
