Rising sports star Phil Dowdell has been named as one of the victims in a mass shooting at a teenager’s birthday party in Alabama at the weekend. At least four people between the ages of 17 and 23 were killed at the party in the small city of Dadeville on Saturday. Twenty-eight more were injured, authorities said, some critically. Police have not confirmed whether a suspect has been arrested.
According to local media, the flags at Dadeville High School flew half-mast on Monday in honor of the four victims who were killed on Sunday. They are identified as 18-year old Philstavious “Phil Dowdell”, 17-year old Keke Nicole Smith and 19-year old Emmanuel ‘Siah” Collins. Mr Dowdell attended his sister Alexis’ 16th birthday at the dance studio in the center of the town. A spokesperson for the local Lake Martin Community Hospital stated that the hospital had treated 15 teens, all of whom sustained gunshot injuries.
They added that six of those injured had been treated, and released. Nineteen were transferred to other hospitals – five remained in critical condition. Taniya Cox was one of those injured in the shooting. She attended a vigil held after the shooting, which was attended by hundreds. She said that she was shot in the arm twice at the party held on Saturday. “The mother of the birthday girl said that whoever had guns needed to get out, and they didn’t, and five minutes later, the shooting started,” said Ms Cox.
The police have not said anything about how the shooting ended or the police investigation, but have encouraged the public to come forward. When asked about the lack information from the police, Mr Davis responded: “Let investigation go on.” According to residents who spoke with the BBC, the mood in Dadeville was sombre. They said that the community was coming together in support of each other after the shooting. The US has now experienced more than 160 mass killings this year.
