Dermatologist-approved tips to manage and prevent split ends the right way

Split ends, medically known as trichoptilosis, occur when the protective outer layer of the hair (cuticle) gets damaged (Image: Freepik). Split ends are one of the most common hair concerns—and also one of the most misunderstood. From expensive serums to DIY fixes, people try everything to “repair” them. But what actually works?. To find out, we spoke to dermatologist Dr Shivani Yadav, Founder of Skin Avenue Clinic, who breaks down the causes of split ends and how to manage them properly.. Dr Yadav explains that split ends, medically known as “trichoptilosis,” occur when the outer protective layer of the hair (the cuticle) is damaged. This leads to fraying, where a single strand splits into two or more parts. According to Dr Yadav, everyday habits are often to blame.. “The most common causes include excessive heat styling, frequent chemical treatments, over-washing, harsh shampoos, and environmental factors such as sun exposure, pollution, and humidity,” she explains. Even tight hairstyles and rough towel-drying can weaken hair over time.. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. Can split ends actually be repaired?. Frequent chemical treatments like coloring, rebonding or keratin, over-washing, and harsh shampoos can also lead to split hair (Image: Freepik). This is where most people get it wrong. “Once a hair strand has split, it cannot be permanently repaired,” Dr Yadav says. While many products claim to “seal” split ends, they only offer temporary smoothing.. “The only effective and long-term solution is trimming the damaged portion,” she adds. Regular trims help prevent the split from travelling further up the hair shaft and causing more breakage.. Story continues below this ad. What actually helps manage split ends?. “While you can’t reverse them, you can definitely manage and minimise their appearance,” the dermatologist assures. Dr Yadav recommends starting with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo, followed by a nourishing conditioner. Weekly deep conditioning masks can help restore moisture, while a lightweight serum or leave-in conditioner can smooth the hair and reduce friction.. It’s also important to limit heat styling. “Always use a heat protectant when you do,” she advises. Switching to a wide-tooth comb and detangling gently—especially when hair is wet—can also minimise breakage.. Dermatologist-approved tips to prevent split ends. Prevention is key when it comes to healthy hair. Dr Yadav suggests trimming your hair every 6–8 weeks to keep ends healthy. Reducing heat styling and avoiding excessive chemical treatments can go a long way.. Protecting your hair from environmental stress is equally important. Cover your hair in harsh sun or polluti

‘Can you be both insulin resistant and have elevated blood sugar?’

By the time glucose begins to rise, years of metabolic injury have often already occurred. The idea that insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar can coexist isn’t just possible—it’s a hallmark of Type 2 diabetes. At first, the body can compensate by producing more insulin, but eventually the pancreas can no longer meet the demand, and blood sugar climbs.

This question recently circulated online, prompting experts to weigh in. Dr Rajiv Kovil, head of diabetology and weight loss expert at Zandra Healthcare and co-founder of Rang De Neela Initiative, confirms the possibility. The bottom line, he says, is a clear and clinically important yes. DISCLAIMER: The information in this article comes from public sources and the experts consulted. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.

The hidden phase before blood sugar rises. In the earliest stages, the body can be insulin resistant while glucose levels remain normal, because it produces extra insulin to keep glucose in check. Even during this phase, changes may already be underway—higher insulin levels, increasing belly fat, and low-grade inflammation—without obvious warning signs.

Over time, the balance can unravel. When the pancreas can no longer keep up with the body’s rising insulin demand, blood sugar begins to rise. That is when insulin resistance and elevated glucose often exist together, signaling progression toward Type 2 diabetes. “By the time glucose rises, years of metabolic injury have already occurred,” Dr Kovil notes.

Why normal reports can be misleading—and what to watch for. Routine tests such as fasting glucose or HbA1c don’t measure insulin resistance directly. They reflect glucose levels, not insulin dynamics, and often detect disease only after it is established. This can leave people experiencing fatigue, weight gain, or post-meal energy crashes even when test results appear “normal.”

The encouraging part: insulin resistance does not always progress to Type 2 Diabetes. With timely lifestyle changes—regular exercise, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and weight management—insulin sensitivity can improve.

Dipika Kakar describes hospital visits as ‘one of the most difficult days’, says ‘everyone is worried about me’

Dipika Kakar, 39, recently visited the hospital to understand the next course of treatment. On her YouTube vlog, the Sasural Simar Ka actor expressed, “I have to go to the hospital today. Would get to know about the future course of treatment. A hospital visit is one of the most difficult days. Everyone is smiling in front of me. But I know that everyone is worried about me, including my mom and mother-in-law. They manage to smile and put on a brave front, which keeps my strength going…and gives me blessings,” she said in Hindi.. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. Taking a leaf out of her expression, let’s understand how illness is not just a physical issue but a deeply emotional and even psychologically draining one, too.. Psychotherapist and life coach Delnna Rrajesh said that moments like hospital visits carry layers of emotional weight. “There is fear of the unknown, anxiety around health outcomes, physical exhaustion, and an unspoken pressure to stay composed, particularly when there is a child involved. For many mothers, the struggle becomes twofold: processing their own pain while simultaneously protecting their child from it,” Delnna said.. This creates what psychology refers to as emotional duality — the ability to hold grief and strength at the same time. On the outside, there is composure. “On the inside, there may be fear, vulnerability, even moments of breakdown,” described Delnna.. Strength often includes moments where emotions overflow. “Tears, fatigue, and emotional vulnerability are not signs of weakness. They are natural responses to uncertainty and stress,” shared Delnna.. Here’s what you should consider (Photo: Freepik). One of the most overlooked aspects of serious illness is the anticipatory anxiety it brings. “Hospital visits are not just about treatment. They represent waiting, uncertainty, and the mind constantly imagining possibilities. Research in health psychology shows that uncertainty can sometimes be more distressing than the diagnosis itself, because the brain struggles with lack of control,” said Delnna.. Story continues below this ad. For caregivers and parents, this is further intensified by the need to maintain normalcy, mentioned Delnna.. How does one cope in such moments?. *From a psychological and emotional healing lens, the first step is allowing emotional expression without guilt. It is important to recognise that feeling overwhelmed does not make you less strong; it makes you human. Suppressing emotions may create temporary control, but over time it can lead to emotional fatigue or burnout.. *Then there is a need to create safe emotional outlets. “This could be through talking to a trusted person, journaling, or even moments of solitude where emotions can be processed without interruption. Emotional release is essential for maintaining men

‘Goli khaana padta tha’: When Asha Bhosle revealed she’s slept only 3–4 hours a night since age 15

Asha Bhosle’s 3-hour sleep routine and its hidden costs. (PTI). Bollywood’s legendary voice Asha Bhosle breathed her last on April 12, 2026, at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, following a chest infection and extreme exhaustion that led to a multi-organ failure. As the country mourns her demise, we look back at the playback singer’s daily routine, which she shared during a 2024 interview.. “Meri neend hai 3 ya 4 ghante ki. Main 15 saal ki thi jab maine film mein gaana shuru kiya, tab se Borivali mein rehti thi toh bohot uthna padhta tha aur aana padta tha. Uss waqt se aadat lag gayi. Phir gaane ka riyaaz bhi karna padhta hai, aur riyaaz ke liye 2 ghante chahiye hote hai. Toh, soke nahi hota hai ye sab (I sleep for 3-4 hours, ever since I was 15 years old. Since I started singing for films, I used to live in Borivali and had to wake up really early and go to work. So, I got used to it. Then I have to practise as well, and you need 2 hours for that. You can’t do all that by sleeping,)” she said.. “Kaam jis din nahi ho, us din thoda late uthte bhi hai, 7 ke baad nahi. Goli khaana padta tha taki neend aa jaye (The days I didn’t have work, I could wake up late, but not beyond 7 am. I had to take pills to be able to sleep),” the singer told Curly Tales.. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. How does long-term sleep deprivation affect the body?. Dr Sunil Kumar K, Lead Consultant – Interventional Pulmonology & Sleep Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, explains irregular sleeping habits can affect almost every system in the body, since sleep is the time when the brain and body repair, reset, and restore energy.. Most people should aim for adequate sleep of 7 to 9 hours each night. (Freepik). “When a person consistently sleeps less than the recommended amount, the brain may not get enough time to remove waste products, which over many years can affect memory, concentration, and thinking ability, and may increase the risk of conditions like dementia in later life. The body’s hormonal balance can also get disturbed, leading to higher stress hormone levels like cortisol, which can increase anxiety, irritability, and fatigue,” he said, adding that it also affects blood sugar control, increasing the risk of diabetes, and poor sleep can weaken the immune system.. According to Dr Kumar, a person is more likely to fall sick often or take longer to recover from infections, and over time it can also increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke, because the heart does not get enough rest and recovery.. Story continues below this ad. “Metabolism may slow down or become irregular, leading to weight gain or difficulty maintaining a healthy weight, and skin health can also be affected, as less sleep reduces collagen repair, causing early ageing signs like wrinkles and dullness,” e
