A mother who dismissed a mark as a’scratch’ from a hairbrush discovered it was skin cancer.

After being diagnosed with skin cancer, a mother who dismissed a small scratch on her head caused by a hairbrush is now warning about the importance of sun protection. Rachel Collett, 48, from Bideford, Devon noticed the mark in 2014. At first, she dismissed it as a harmless spot or a beauty spot. She explained that the mark began to pucker around it, and then what she called a volcanic crater began dipping into her head. It grew larger until the red part in the middle vanished and it became pearly white. I went to the doctors, who referred me for dermatologist. I was referred to a dermatologist by my doctors. “[The dermatologist] was 98% certain that it was basal cell carcinoma when I got there and asked me questions such as “did I use sunbeds?” I replied “no”. “No,” I replied. “And because I was olive-skinned, my mum would apply coconut oil to me, instead of sun cream, because she didn’t know about the dangers of skin cancer. At 41 years old, Rachel had her first surgery to remove a lesion. Basal cell carcinoma is a common form of cancer in older people. Doctors say it’s very rare for someone her age to have it. Rachel had surgery to remove her first lesion in 2015. Rachel stated that they described the procedure as cutting my forehead across, down, and across. Then, they opened it up like an open window to remove the cancerous tissue and surrounding it. They then put it back together, and my scar became an anchor. It was worrying because I hadn’t heard of it before, and I had heard about skin cancer and melanoma. I was given a leaflet to review and was told it’s rare for it to spread to other organs. This made me feel a little better. “How many more can I get in my lifetime?” I thought when she said I’d probably get more. It’s the scar that everyone notices. Every student in the school I work in asks, “What’s that scar on my head for, miss?” It’s affected my self-confidence. It makes me feel uncomfortable when people stare at me. “I have to remind my self that this is a warning to others and try to tell myself it’s the tale of my life. “At the start of the year, she noticed a similarity in her nose’s behavior to the one on her forehead. She had to have Mohs surgery. But, it was clear that this was a warning to other people. I was a frequent traveler to Greece in my 20s and spent two holidays there each year. “I thought that I was adequately protected by putting on factor 15, but it doesn’t protect you at all. “Make sure you have suncream on!” is what I am constantly telling my children. I have been using factor 50 to stay in the shade during heatwaves. I don’t like going down the beach for too long. “I would advise you to always apply sun cream and protect your skin. It’s not about applying it once you’re out there. It’s about putting it on before going out. Because it takes time for the skin to absorb it. The Australian slogan is “Slip, Slop and Slap”, and we should remember to slip on a shirt, apply sun lotion, and put on a hat.

However, this is the first Marburg outbreak in Equatorial Guinea. The disease is highly contagious, so it is important to learn all you can about it. Marburg disease is a bat-borne disease that can spread to people through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and objects.

According to WHO, Marburg disease is similar in appearance to Ebola virus. It is a highly contagious disease with a fatality rate of up to 88 per cent. According to the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, Marburg is a rare hemorhagic fever that can cause organ damage and bleeding. It is a zoonotic viral that, along six Ebola viruses, forms the filovirus family. It was first identified in 1967. Symptoms of Marburg disease include fever, diarrhoea and tiredness.
