Russian drone attack kills two in Ukraine ahead of talks in US, officials say

Officials report two killed in Ukraine by Russian drone strike just before US talks. 28 minutes ago. Vitaliy Shevchenko, Kyiv. Fiona Nimoni. – Che stai facendo? – Che cos’e’? – Cosa? Local authorities report that two people died in a Russian drone strike on a residence in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia. The assault, occurring just before upcoming discussions between Ukrainian and US negotiators in America, also wounded two children aged 11 and 15. Talks aimed at resolving the war have been stalled since the onset of the recent Iran conflict. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is directing his negotiators to address the US move to relax sanctions on Russian oil, a step taken by Washington to stabilize global energy prices. US-mediated discussions have yet to halt the Ukraine conflict or alter Russia’s stance, with slim prospects for progress. The upcoming US talks include plans for another trilateral session with Russia and initiatives to mend the strained ties between Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump, who has blamed the Ukrainian leader for blocking peace. Ukraine is also proposing to share its drone technology and know-how with the US, potentially aiding operations against Iran. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, its forces have repeatedly struck Zaporizhzhia. This region is one of four southeastern Ukrainian areas annexed by Russia, none of which it fully controls. In a recent BBC interview with Laura Kuenssberg, Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine’s missile shortages, stemming from the Middle East war sparked by US and Israeli attacks on Iran. He claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks a prolonged US-Israel-Iran conflict to sap Kyiv’s strength by diverting American resources. The Trump administration’s recent one-month waiver easing sanctions on nations purchasing Russian oil was praised by the Kremlin but alarmed Ukrainians. The measure simplifies Russian oil acquisitions, and pro-Ukraine advocates view it as a symbolic retreat from the West’s strategy of maximum pressure on Moscow. More on this story. Why is Trump relaxing sanctions on Russian oil—and will it aid Putin? Zelensky says Ukraine is short on missiles because of the Middle East war.

South Korean officials report that 853 people died after a massive fire swept through a car parts factory in the central city of Daejeon. Three people remain missing, and 59 were injured. Videos depict massive flames and dense smoke billowing from the building as firefighters battle to control the fire. At the time of the incident, 170 workers were inside. Firefighters explained they couldn’t enter the building sooner because they feared it might collapse. There was also a risk of igniting the sodium stored there. An overnight search for the missing individuals began after the building was declared safe to enter. Socialists battle to hold Paris in key mayoral elections across France

Socialists fight to retain Paris in crucial French mayoral elections. Eight hours prior. Hugh Schofield, Paris correspondent, Paris. Il est également membre de la Knesset. Mayors for France’s largest cities will be elected on Sunday, in the final vote ahead of next year’s presidential race. Anticipation is particularly intense in Paris and Nice. The capital might swing rightward after 25 years of Socialist-led governance if Rachida Dati surges in polls to beat Emmanuel Grégoire. On the Riviera, Eric Ciotti, a far-right associate of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN), appears poised to win. Yet in this second round of local elections, nationwide attention centers on the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) party. Getty Images. In many of these areas, it has now allied with other left-wing groups—primarily from the Socialist Party (PS) or Greens—to consolidate the anti-right vote. However, the crucial test in these elections—which are highly significant ahead of 2027—is whether voters embrace or reject these alliances, amid rising criticisms of LFI and its leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon for alleged antisemitism and pursuing a “sectional” agenda. The Muslim vote… A prime example is Toulouse in the south-west, hub of France’s aeronautics sector, with a large student body and a typical French banlieue of high-rise estates. The city’s centre-right mayor, Jean-Luc Moudenc, topped the first round with 37% of the vote. He was trailed by two left-wing candidates, François Piquemal (27.5%) of LFI and Socialist François Briançon (25%). These two have now combined their lists, putting them ahead of Moudenc on paper.

Chuck Norris will forever be remembered for his legendary roles in film and TV, including the crime-busting sheriff in Walker, Texas Ranger. But many young people know the late actor mainly from his starring role in countless memes. Starting on message boards in the early 2000s, these memes—known as “Chuck Norris facts”—had evolved into their own genre by the 2010s. They humorously depicted the actor as superhuman, frightening, and god-like. Some examples: Chuck Norris can ace a vision test even with his eyes shut.

Elon Musk misled Twitter investors, jury finds

Jury rules Elon Musk deceived Twitter investors. Nine hours earlier. Kali Hays, technology reporter for Reuters. A jury in San Francisco federal court ruled that Elon Musk made intentionally misleading public statements during a key phase of his 2022 Twitter acquisition. After two days of deliberation, the unanimous verdict favored Twitter investors who sued, claiming they relied on his comments. Musk testified earlier this month that he didn’t deceive anyone and that people overinterpreted his tweets and remarks. However, the jury determined that his assertions about issues with Twitter’s user metrics and his potential withdrawal from the $44 billion deal were deliberately deceptive. Musk’s lawyers did not respond to requests for comment. Nor did the investors’ lawyers, led by Brian Belgrave, an Oregon small-business owner. This is not the first time Musk has faced legal trouble over his tweets. However, he successfully defeated a 2023 lawsuit from Tesla shareholders who alleged the CEO had deceived them through his posts about the automaker. In Friday’s ruling, the San Francisco jury determined that Musk had artificially depressed Twitter’s stock price by $3 to $8 per share from May to October 2022 due to his public remarks. This could result in thousands of dollars in damages for each investor in the class action. Monte Mann, a business litigation attorney at Armstrong Teasdale, stated that the verdict against Musk “sends a clear message”: “If you influence the market with your words, you bear the consequences.” Starting in May 2022, Musk began tweeting about Twitter’s alleged problems with fake accounts, or “bots,” declared the deal “on hold,” and later announced he wanted to back out completely. Twitter sued Musk to compel the multibillionaire to honor the agreement, and in early October, he complied, acquiring Twitter at the original agreed price. The following year, he rebranded the social media platform as X. Those months were financially harmful to Twitter investors like Belgrave, who traded shares in the company during that period. Earlier this month, Belgrave testified to the jury that he sold thousands of Twitter shares in July 2022, convinced by Musk’s public statements and comments that the acquisition was off. Belgrave sold at a price below what he had paid just months before, and far under the $54.20 per share Musk ultimately paid. “I got screwed,” Belgrave remarked.
