Ronaleen ‘Crocky’ Murphy is a North Queensland diehard who has already spent more than $22,000 to see the team play this year – but jokes the expense is fine because it’s only her kid’s inheritance that she’s spending.
Murphy has been a hardcore Cowboys fan since the club formed in 1995 and flies 1000km to Townsville from her outback home in Mount Isa for every home game.
‘It’s a lot [of money] — flights, accommodation, meals, our memberships. Oh, and my husband likes to have a beer at the games,’ she told the ABC.
‘We’ve worked hard all our lives, so who cares? It’s only the kids’ inheritance.’
The footy-mad Queenslander has also invested in some important lucky charms including a blue watch, a ring, and her bejewelled Cowboys cross.
‘Some people have tried to buy it off me but no price could ever see me part with it,’ she said of the cross.
The super-fan runs a business in Mount Isa and has even designed the firm’s uniform in blue and gold as a tribute to the team she loves.
Murphy says she was praying for a miracle when her side was losing to Cronulla in this year’s qualifying final.
‘We were down in points, but I was praying with my Cowboys cross, which I hold every time they play,’ she said.
‘I just knew they had the guts and tenacity to come back and win that game.’
The Cowboys won 32-30 when Valentine Holmes slotted home a long-range field goal in the 92nd minute after two periods of extra time – and Ms Murphy was over the moon.
She secured her ticket to the preliminary final clash at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, where her team will take on the Parramatta Eels on Friday night – and she’s so confident of victory she has already booked flights and tickets for the grand final.
‘I go for the boys and my tickets are refundable. So, if they don’t get in [to the grand final], they’ll go back for someone else to enjoy.’
