Experts believe adapters are responsible for transforming semi-automatic guns into automatic weapons in a matter of seconds.
(CNN) The number of shootings in the US involving automatic weapons has increased by nearly 1,400% in recent years, according to a CNN analysis. This was compiled by ShotSpotter, Inc., a gunfire detection company that uses acoustic sensors in 130 US cities. ShotSpotter, Inc., found that there were approximately 5,600 incidents of automatic weapon fire last year. This is according to an analysis by a gunfire detection company. The company has acoustic sensors placed in about 130 US cities. He then shows how it works using a full-auto conversion tool.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has seen a significant increase in the number of conversion devices it seizes. This is compared to the 100 or so that were seized in 2017 and 1,500 in 2018. Read MoreCNN previously reported on an ATF effort to recover thousands of illegally imported devices from China in 2019. Law enforcement officials stated that 3D printers have only made the problem worse in the years since. “Not since Prohibition has we seen this many machine guns being utilized to commit crimes,” said Tom Chittum. He spent more than 20 years with the ATF and was its No. Before joining ShotSpotter as an executive, 2 officials. Chittum stated that automatic weapons were virtually banned from city streets for decades because of gun laws. “But machine guns are back and they’re everywhere. “Automatic weapons were used in a number of high-profile attacks in recent years. These include a mass shooting at Sacramento, California that left six people dead and several others injured, a shooting at a Washington school in which a sniper using automatic rifles unleashed more than 200 rounds, wounding four, as well as the killing of William “Bill” Jeffrey, a Houston police officer, during the execution of an arrest warrant. The 30-year-old veteran officer was killed in a torrential gunfire from a felon with an illegally converted weapon. This happened in Sacramento, California on April 3, 2022. CNN reviewed court filings from cities across the US and found numerous cases involving conversion devices, or semi-automatic handguns that have been converted to fully automatic. A man named by prosecutors in Chicago allegedly continued to trade the devices while he was on bond and awaiting trial. An alleged associate of this man was heard telling an undercover ATF agent that he would get a better deal if he bought bulk and that he should act quickly as there was high demand. According to court filings, he said that people would buy them switches. According to a court filing, he said that the device would be sold to “gangbangers and sh*t” as it is an emerging black market commodity. CNN reviewed cases where they were allegedly sold under the table in Miami by a licensed gun dealer. Los Angeles: A man being investigated for supplying local gangs with guns allegedly sold an ATF informant the Glock conversion device, a Glock 9mm pistol, and a high capacity magazine. Investigators in Washington, DC, were investigating a young man who allegedly dropped a handgun that had been converted into a trashcan. They later discovered several YouTube videos where he spoke about “switches.” According to Earl Griffith, chief of ATF’s Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division, the increasing availability of auto switches is due in part to the ease with which they are made using inexpensive, 3D-printed parts and instructions that can be found online. Griffith said that it was very simple to use a 3D-printer to make the devices. “I was able to complete it myself in just 15 minutes.” Griffith explains. A CNN review of YouTube using key-word search terms revealed multiple videos that had racked up over 1 million views. Federal prosecutors in Texas linked one group of auto-switch instructional video to a man who was charged with making, possessing, and transferring 3D printed switches. He has pleaded guilty. YouTube removed the videos after CNN inquired about them. YouTube spokesperson stated that YouTube does not allow content instructing viewers on how to make accessories that convert firearms to automatic fire. “Griffith stated that, despite their increasing popularity, many law enforcement officers don’t know how to recognize the devices on firearms they seize. He said that when we tell them about it they go back to their evidence vault and look through the contents and find the stuff. “This many machine guns used to commit crimes has not been seen since Prohibition. It is difficult to quantify incidents involving automatic weapon fire. The shell casings from automatic weapons are no different to those fired from semi-automatic guns. ShotSpotter is here to help. ShotSpotter has agreements with 130 cities, where it installs acoustic sensor in designated areas to detect gunfire. The computer algorithm is patented and can distinguish between gunfire and innocuous sounds like jackhammering or car backfiring. The algorithm is listened to by human analysts at the company’s headquarters, in San Francisco Bay Area, and a satellite office, in Washington, DC. If they agree, they alert police. According to the company, its goal is to notify police within one minute. In recent years, there have been an increase in suspected incidents of automatic weapon fire from 400 in 2019, to 1,800 in 2020 and 5,600 in 2017. ShotSpotter stated that an internal analysis revealed that the number of suspected gunfire incidents rose 14 times over the past three years, even after accounting for the increase in coverage in the US. With approximately 3,800 incidents being detected in the first half, this upward trend has continued into the second half of 2011. ShotSpotter shared videos showing examples of automatic gunfire detections. ShotSpotter’s analysis shows that the red areas are likely to contain shell casings.
Kaylan Parker, an analyst, replayed some of her and others’ “full-auto” incidents during a June demonstration. She filled her Washington, DC listening post with audio from what sounded as if it was a war zone. She said that the company had recently detected more than 25 instances of automatic weapons fire, with 300 rounds involved, including one in Baltimore. Baltimore police issued a press release regarding the incident, citing ShotSpotter alerts and stating that two people, including a boy aged 14, were injured. ShotSpotter was founded in 1996 and provides real-time information about shooting locations and their nature, which is often not reported. Officials at ShotSpotter claim that the early information provides a tactical advantage for police and has led to both the arrest of shooters as well as faster medical care for victims of gunshot injuries. ShotSpotter is a publicly traded company that reported last year’s revenue of almost $60 million. However, it has been the subject of controversy in recent years. Criticism centers on the location of the sensors in communities that are dominated by minorities and the use of the information as evidence in court cases. This is in contrast to the primary mission of the sensor, which alerts police to gunfire. Critics view the placement of the sensors in racially biased areas as a reason for increased police use of stop-and frisk tactics. Defense attorneys have criticized ShotSpotter’s results, saying they are unreliable and difficult to examine. The company has not disclosed the science behind its system. Other critics have questioned ShotSpotter’s true value as a crime-fighting tool, regardless of how well it detects and locates gunfire, because they say there’s no compelling evidence that it reduces gun violence.ShotSpotter, which touts a 97% accuracy rate — a figure backed by an audit paid for by the company — has pushed back against the criticism with a prominent link on its website. It cites “proof of its positive effect” studies and claims that the location of its sensors are determined in consultation with local police and city officials. The data is “based upon historical gunfire and homicide statistics.” “Machine guns have returned, and they are everywhere. “Machine guns are back, and they’re everywhere. A case that is currently going through federal court in Washington, DC highlights the utility of ShotSpotter and the difficulties prosecutors often face when trying to use it as evidence in court. ShotSpotter reported to police that there was gunfire at a home in the southeast quadrant of the city on January 20, 2020. Police discovered that a nearby surveillance camera captured a man firing a weapon at the air at 4:45 AM, which was the exact time ShotSpotter alerted. According to court records, police obtained a search warrant and found the PCP dealer, a twice-convicted, in the house. Prosecutors also reported that they seized a Glock.40 calibre semi-automatic handgun with a conversion device and an extended magazine from a closet. According to prosecutors, the house occupant was charged with possessing a machine gun. It might seem like a simple case regarding ShotSpotter’s effectiveness. The use of company information in court is another matter. Lacie Jeffrey, the daughter and officer who was killed in Houston last year, stated that she couldn’t understand the proliferation of fully-automatic weapons such as the one that left her father with multiple gunshot wounds. CNN obtained an autopsy report that shows that the veteran officer was struck more times than 12 times during the brief encounter. Jeffrey said she reached out to Texas lawmakers to try to pass a stricter law regarding conversion devices, such as the one used to kill her father. “We do not live in a war zone,” Jeffrey told CNN. “We don’t need these automatic weapons in Houston or anywhere else in the United States.”

The Las Virgenes Municipal Water District has a solution for repeat water restriction violators: restrictors
Calabasas (CNN) The beautiful, cloudless skies and perfectly manicured lawns are a sad reality for California’s Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, as it struggles to deal with the megadrought that has ravaged the West. Customer service representatives will be checking for violations of water restrictions when they are visiting different neighborhoods. For repeat offenders, officials are trying something different: adding water restrictors (which reduce the home’s water supply) to the pipes. Read MoreLas Virgenes gets all its water from the State Water Project. This pipes water runoff from the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains to Southern California. The snowpack at the end of winter was only 4% above normal, which led to unprecedented restrictions. Las Virgenes only receives 5% of its requested water supply this year. Would you be willing to rip up your lawn for $6 per square foot? Welcome to California’s drought-stricken state. McNutt said that the district has to supplement the water it receives from the State Water Project. He added that the reservoir is 72% full at full capacity and is available for six months. McNutt said that California is suffering from severe drought. Nearly all of the state is in the worst three categories. According to the latest US Drought Monitor, California is experiencing a 20-year-long drought that has seen a number of severely deficient years of snow and rain. Residents are being asked to cut down on their outdoor watering. Outdoor watering accounts for 70% of customers’ water use, according the water district. This can make a big difference in conservation. McNutt explained that only one day per week, Tuesdays or Thursdays, is allowed outside. This depends on whether your address ends in an odd number or an even number. Each sprinkler can only be left on for eight minutes. “It may help keep some of the grass live if people still want to have lawns. But they are brown. “Why the Great American Lawn is terrible to the West’s water crisisCNN accompanied Cason Gilmer, a senior field customer service representative at Las Virgenes, as he searched for water that was not being used. He and his team make sure to look out for water in the area. This includes water running down streets and onto gutters. They also check for outdoor irrigation that is off when it should be. Gilmer said that water is a target when it’s in our faces and the sprinklers go off at noon on Wednesday. He also noted that most customers are doing their part now. “This street was very, very green two years ago. “Along the ride the number of homes with bright green grass was outnumbered by those with brown lawns. Some lawns were replaced with turf, while others were painted green. Celebrities can also rat on one another. If anyone from the water district sees water waste, they can leave an address tag to let the homeowner that they are not in compliance. They also send out mailers. They also send mailers. According to recent data, some household names, including musicians, athletes, and celebrities, have used far more water than they should, according to new data. Wade and Gabrielle Union, Wade’s wife, stated that they have taken “disastrous steps to reduce water consumption in accordance to the new city guidelines” since moving into their home. “LasVirgenes stated that all those celebrities are now in good standing. “Those celebrities have been working closely with the district. They want to do the right things… in order for us to achieve a much higher water usage tier.” McNutt said. Las Virgenes has discovered that some customers are more sensitive to losing water than losing money. With so many wealthy residents, Las Virgenes has seen this. “We try to get public education, notification and stuff about drought out here, but a lot people throw away the mailers. They ignore it,” Gilmer said. He created a simple but effective way to get people’s attention one gallon at time. It is a last resort. The restrictors have a small hole at the center, which reduces water flow to the home. This restrictor will give you approximately one gallon per minute. A three-quarter inch meter is normally 25 to 30 gallons per minute. Gilmer explained that at 25-30 gallons per minute, you can run your dishwasher, run your sink, and maybe even turn on your irrigation and nobody will know the difference. Your sink will work fine with the restrictor in. Your shower works OK. Your irrigation won’t work. It won’t provide the required amount of water. “Some residents in Los Angeles County are asked to suspend outdoor watering. Gilmer even tried it at home to see how it felt. The main thing was that you couldn’t do two things simultaneously. My shower would have been finished if my wife was doing dishes while I was in the bathroom. Gilmer smiled slightly. After a day and a quarter, my wife insisted that I take it off. “California drought could reduce state’s hydropower by half this summer. Customers who use more than 150% of their water allocation for four times will be eligible to have the flow restrictor installed. Las Virgenes estimates that about 1,600 connections or 7% of its customers fall into this category. McNutt stated that the goal of the survey is not to be punitive. “It’s meant for people to know that this drought is extremely serious and we need to encourage you to do your part. McNutt said that Las Virgenes is setting an example in California by using flow restriction devices to conserve water. “We are leading the charge in how to get people to stop using water due to climate change.

NASA is returning to the Moon in a way we have never seen before
CNN will provide live coverage of the Monday morning launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA’s space correspondents, Kristin Fisher, and Rachel Crane, will provide us with moment-by-moment coverage from the launch, along with a team experts. The launch of the uncrewed Artemis I mission on Monday, August 29 is just one step towards the future space exploration. The Apollo 17 mission still holds the record for longest crewed deep-space flight: 12.5 days. With the Artemis program, astronauts will be able to go on long-duration deep-space missions that test all limits of exploration. NASA administrator Bill Nelson spoke at a news conference earlier in the month to explain why Artemis I is returning to the Moon 50 years later. “We’re going to the moon to learn how to live, work, and survive,” Nelson said. Read More “How can you keep humans alive under such hostile conditions?” We’ll learn how to use resources on the moon to be able build things in the future. Not a quarter of a mile away, not a three day journey, but millions and billions of miles over a long journey that takes months and even years. NASA has released new posters that depict the different stages of the Artemis I voyage. NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik spoke at a NASA briefing Saturday about the importance of lunar exploration in preparing for landing on Mars. He said that you would not rely on brand-new gear or shoes when camping in Alaska’s wilderness. Mars is not the best place to try out new gear. Bresnik stated that they would first visit some local places to get a better idea of the terrain. “Then, you can return home if your shoelaces are broken or something similar. “For more than 20 years, astronauts have lived and worked aboard International Space Station, which orbits around 254 miles above Earth in low-Earth orbit. The astronauts’ experiences, which can last from six months to almost a year, have shown how microgravity affects the human body. “Every day that was spent on the space station, it was like walking on Mars,” said NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman. He is the Chief of the Astronaut Office at Johnson Space Center, Houston. “That’s why we’re up here. We want to make Earth a better place and expand humanity’s reach into the solar system. “READ MORE Artemis I by numbers” Artemis II, which is scheduled for 2024, will follow a similar route to Artemis I, but from a greater distance than any Apollo missions. Artemis III, which is scheduled for late 2025 will land the first woman or man at the moon’s south pole. These shadowed areas may contain ice and other resources that could support astronauts during long moonwalks. Meet Commander Moonikin Campos. This mannequin is going further than any astronaut. “Our moon serves as basically an celestial library right next to us,” said Jacob Bleacher (NASA’s chief exploration scientist). “Lunar rocks, lunar ice, and other lunar materials basically act as the books in this library. They can be used to help us understand how the solar system evolved. This can help us gain insight into the past events on Earth as life began to establish a foothold in this solar system. “The Artemis program aims to establish a permanent human presence on the moon, and to place an orbiting lunar outpost called The Gateway. This illustration shows SpaceX’s Starship human-lander design, which will transport the first NASA astronauts onto the moon’s surface through the Artemis program. Jim Free, NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate associate administrator, stated that they want to remain on the lunar surface and learn there so that we can do the best science and plan for Mars. “On Apollo we did amazing science at the Equator. This time, we’re going the South Pole. Nelson stated that the SLS rocket would evolve over time. The rocket will be taller than Artemis I and will dock with the Gateway when it reaches the launchpad. It is the Space Launch System Rocket’s inaugural flight. The Orion spacecraft and heat shield will be used to protect future astronauts. Science experiments and technology demonstrations will be conducted inside Orion, as well as flying outside on CubeSats to gather additional information about the space environment that future Artemis astronauts will encounter. The next steps of Artemis could be informed by the lessons learned from Artemis I. These lessons will be collected when the spacecraft splashes down in Oct. Free stated that the first five Artemis missions are planned and NASA is currently working on the details for mission six through ten. NASA teams are “going through the broad exploration goals and then narrowing down the architecture which takes us to Mars.” “We plan to roll through that architecture, decisions, and process in the first half of next year. The Obama Administration set the goal of landing humans on Mars in 2033. NASA administrators have maintained that goal since then. “NASA is at an historic inflection point with the launch of Artemis I on Monday, poised for the most significant series science and human exploration missions over the past generation,” said Bhavya Lel, NASA associate administrator, technology, policy and strategy.
