“Keep Breathing” is a survival thriller that starts before you run out of oxygen.

Melissa Barrera has been destined for stardom since “In the Heights”, and her dance repertoire has been impressive in the years since, including the recent “Scream” movie. But “Keep Breathing” showcases her in an extremely focused way, in a woman-against-the-wilderness limited series that sends its star up a creek without much of a paddle.
The six-episode Netflix series actually begins well. Barrera’s Liv is desperate to find a flight from Canada after hers was canceled. She bribes her way onto a private plane which crashes into the Canadian frontier. She is left alone and must fight and claw to survive. She also discovers the habits of bears in the woods. Finally, she seeks to rescue herself.
It’s all very compelling for a while. But then there’s the question of why this New York lawyer was so determined to reach her destination. There’s also the matter of her coworker who became her boyfriend (Jeff Wilbusch) as well as her complicated relationships with her parents.
The constant switching between survival and adventure stakes leaves “Keep Breathing,” as well as some of the gimicky flourishes that were used to give Barrera – as she is – something to interact with, gasping for air.
Brendan Gall and Martin Gero produced the series, which was also made famous by “Blindspot,” a series about a female protagonist with dark pasts. The episodes are short and sweet, but the show doesn’t quite escape the feeling of a movie concept that is twice as long.
Barrera is either struggling to survive, or showing her workaholic side in flashbacks. She keeps her word, but the paper doesn’t.
There’s always curiosity once you start “Breathing”, especially when the time requirements aren’t too daunting. It’s not a bad deal, but if it’s not getting better, don’t wait.
“Keep Breathing,” premieres July 28th on Netflix.
