23 best Turkish shows to watch when you’ve binge-watched enough crap and need a breather

Turkish dramas first began to gain popularity across the world with the release of Binbir Gece (1001 Nights) in 2006. Since then, some of the best Turkish shows like Diriliş: Ertuğrul (2014) and As the Crow Flies (2022) have gained global acclaim for their dramatic portrayals of human emotion and a range of socio-political issues. According to studies, Turkey currently stands as one of the highest exporters of television shows, ranking second only to the USA.. Compared to the usual 30-40 minute episode format of the West, Turkish shows are much slower, with episodes stretching up to 120 minutes. Their focus on ideas of justice, love as well as family values have gained them a loyal fan-following in India, prompting remakes such as Kya Qusoor Hai Amala Ka? (2017) based upon Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne (2010). From popular rom coms to underrated thrillers, Vogue India rounds up the best Turkish shows to watch.. Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne? (What is Fatmagül’s fault?) (2010-2012). Two seasons and 80 episodes long, Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne? is a moving tale of justice, revenge, class conflict and love. Written by the duo Ece Yörenç and Melek Gençoğlu, the show focuses on Fatmagül, a gang-raped woman hailing from a poor family forced into marriage with one of her rapists. Despite the men who gang-raped her being some of the most powerful men in the country, Fatmagül does not stop fighting until she is granted justice.. Diriliş: Ertuğrul (Resurrection: Ertuğrul) (2014-2019)

Bhumi Pednekkar offsets a darker palette with a painted tiger bag and ornate jewellery

Bhumi Pednekkar’s Dulari look is organised around the skirt. A sleeveless high-neck top in charcoal sets a contained upper line, but the eye drops quickly to the handwoven mulberry silk balloon skirt. Its volume is gathered low and wide, with a rounded hem that gives it that buoyant shape, while the hand-painted surface shifts across the fabric in smoky tonal variations. Hand-embroidered highlights catch light in small flashes, which keeps the surface active as the skirt moves.. The top stays pared back and close to the body. The skirt brings volume, texture and a surface that changes as the folds deepen and release. A broad waistband makes that division explicit, so the silhouette feels intentionally split.. Bidipto’s styling works with that divide. Jewellery by Lotus Arts de Vivre sits high at the neck and then drops lower through the pendant, creating a vertical line before the eye meets the fuller sweep of the skirt. The earrings bring in turquoise and pearl, breaking the darker palette with a brighter note of colour. The hand-held bag, with its painted tiger and palm motif, adds a playful note to the ensemble.. Hair by Jyoti Mandre is pulled into a tight bun and tied at the back with a gold ribbon, a detail that shows itself more clearly in profile and from behind. At the hem, the embellished Aprajita Toor heels add another glinting surface when the skirt lifts. The makeup stays in a darker evening direction, with smoked eyes, a low-sheen base and a deeper rose-brown lip.. “The accessories overshadow the simple but statement charcoal grey ensemble. Ditch them for a more minimal chic approach. Pair with thonged sandals, a statement watch, small studs and an east-west shoulder bag,” says Divya Balakrishnan, Vogue India fashion associate.

The happiest women in their 70s are single

At some point in most women’s lives, a familiar line of thinking creeps in—whether on its own or planted by well-meaning parents: What if I don’t get married? What if I never find my person and end up alone?. For Joan, the panic hit in her 30s—strong enough to land her in a psychologist’s office. Back then, she says, “a woman who didn’t want a husband was assumed to have something wrong with her.” But her therapist—married with children, yet more open-minded than most—didn’t try to correct her with cheesy motivational mantras or fear tactics about a “ticking clock.” Instead, she asked a different question: What kind of husband would you want, if you had one?. Joan listed a few traits. Someone busy, she recalls saying. Someone deeply absorbed in his own life—his job, his hobbies, his community.. “So you’d want someone intellectually stimulating?” her therapist asked.. “No,” Joan replied. “I’d want someone who’s never home.”. It landed as a joke, though deep down, it wasn’t. What came from that session was an almost accidental realisation that sounded radical at the time (it was around 1980): “Some people genuinely live their best lives independently,” Joan tells me. Now 79, single, and uninterested in changing her relationship status, she has spent decades proving her theory true.. For much of modern history, women in their 70s, like Joan were cast as anomalies, freaks or worse: cautionary tales. There’s “the childless cat lady.” The “old maid.” The “lonely spinster.” Singlehood was framed as a transitional phase, a temporary stop on the way to finding the One. Not an end goal, and certainly not a fulfilling one.. But the stigma is softening—and the older, unmarried women of this generation are living proof that a life without a husband isn’t a fallback; it’s a deeply satisfying choice.. You can see it in the collective fatigue around modern dating (78% of users on apps including Tinder, Hinge and Bumble reported feeling burnt out, per a recent Forbes Health survey). Young adults in their mid-20s to early 30s (the supposed “prime marriage years”) are having far less sex than previous generations, with sexual inactivity up roughly 50% for women over the past decade. The shift shows up in pop culture too—in particular, the growing appetite for plots that sideline romance in favour of friendship, independence and chosen families (like in Barbie and Wicked).. But perhaps the clearest proof is in lived experiences. The several 70-somethings I spoke with for this story have been single for decades—and aren’t wishing they’d done it any differently. If anything, their lives carry a sense of ease and expansiveness. Many describe weekly, laughter-filled girls’ nights and happy hours; solo trips planned on a whim; financial freedom to buy property, adopt pets, start small businesses…literally do whatever they want, whenever they want. A few still date casually, dipping in
