A judge ruled that Anna Sorokin (fake heiress Netflix’s “Inventing Anna”) can be released on bond while she fights for deportation.
According to court records, Immigration Judge Charles Conroy ruled this week that Sorokin could be released on $10,000 bond from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. He also ordered that Sorokin be kept in a residential location for 24 hours per day and that she should not access any social media platforms directly or through a surrogate while the case is ongoing.
“This ruling does NOT mean Anna will get a pass. “She will face deportation proceedings, and her release will closely monitored by ICE, the State of New York, and she will continue to face these proceedings,” attorney John Sandweg, a former acting Director of ICE, who was one of Sorokin’s attorneys, stated in a statement on Thursday. “The Court found that the evidence clearly showed that any risks can still be adequately mitigated with appropriate supervision,” he said.
In the judge’s ruling, ICE may also use an ankle monitor to keep an eye on Sorokin after she’s released.
According to a spokesperson for ICE, Sorokin, 31, was still in ICE custody as of Thursday afternoon.
According to her attorney, she has been in ICE custody since 17 months. She was held mainly at the Orange County Correctional Facility upstate New York.
After her 2019 conviction, the Manhattan District attorney stated that Sorokin was guilty of stealing more $200,000 from friends and banks while trying to scam New York society.
After a 2018 New York Magazine article, her case attracted widespread attention.
This article was the basis for Shonda Rhimes’ “Inventing Anna”, a dramatization that debuted on Netflix in February. It quickly became one the most popular shows on the streaming service. Julia Garner, an actress best known for her Emmy-winning portrayal of Ruth on “Ozark,” was Sorokin.
Sorokin is convicted. The drama continues in real life.
After serving almost four years for theft and larceny, Sorokin was released in February 2021. She was soon back behind bars.

Sorokin was taken into custody by ICE on March 25, 2021. According to ICE, the Board of Immigration Appeals granted Sorokin an emergency stay in November. She has been fighting her deportation and joined a group suing ICE earlier this year. They claimed she’d requested and been denied Covid boost shots while in custody. According to court records, they dropped their lawsuit in March after they received the shots.
Throughout her detention, Sorokin has posted frequent updates to her social media accounts. They’ve recently featured Sorokin’s artwork, which was featured at a New York show back in May.
An attorney representing Sorokin said earlier this year that he feared for her deportation if he couldn’t reach her. However, word later came out that she was still under ICE custody.
Soon afterward Sorokin, who was soon behind bars, spoke out, telling the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that she never claimed that she was a German heiress.
Sorokin stated that he was originally from Germany and that nobody ever asked him about his job. “Nobody ever asks me who my parents are and how much they make. It’s absurd.
Alex Cooper, her host, told her that she had never “told any senseless lying.”

She did admit to lying about her background and status, however.
She said, “I suppose I did.” “I don’t know the exact instance, but I’m certain.”
Sorokin said that she was also surprised by the public’s fascination for her story.
She said, “It was really surprising to me that people would be interested in how I went about the tasks, because it just made sense to me.”
