According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), an Israeli soldier was killed in a shooting at a military checkpoint near East Jerusalem on Saturday.
According to the army, “Overnight, an IDF soldier was critically injured in a shooting attack at Shu’afat checkpoint.” “The soldier was taken to a hospital for further treatment and was declared dead. We send our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family.
A spokesperson for Border Police stated that a suspect arrived at Shuafat crossing and fired shots at security forces. In addition, a shot was fired by a passing vehicle. The suspects are being sought by Border Guard forces.
Israeli emergency services reported that a male in serious condition was taken to a hospital and that a female was treated on the spot and is now in a mild condition.
Police were searching for the suspect when helicopters could be heard buzzing in the sky of Jerusalem.
The shooting took place at a checkpoint in the normally quiet area close to the Shuafat Refugee Camp, East Jerusalem. This area is considered to be occupied by most international communities.
Prime Minister Yair Lepid released a statement calling the situation “serious” while stating that “many forces are deployed on the ground and work night and day to protect the citizens of Israel.” Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. We are strong, no matter what happens, and we will not be defeated by terror.
In one of the most deadly Israeli West Bank raids of the year, at least 4 Palestinians were killed and dozens more were injured
According to Palestinian authorities, the attack follows a violent two-day period in which four Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces.
The youngest victim was Adel Ibrahim Daoud, 14, who was shot near the separation wall between Israel & West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The Israel Defense Forces responded to questions about Daoud’s demise by saying that during routine IDF operational activity, soldiers from the IDF spotted a suspect throwing Molotov cocktails at them near Qalqilya. The soldiers responded with live firing. A hit was identified. The incident is currently under review.”
A 17-year-old boy was also killed in clashes with Israeli soldiers on the same day. WAFA reported that villagers were “countering an Israeli settlement attack on the village” when soldiers opened fire. The IDF claimed they were responding to “dozens (throwing stones) at an Israeli settlement” and attacked soldiers. They “responded with measures of dispersal and a suspect arrest process that included live fire.”
The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that two Palestinian teenagers were killed in an Israeli military operation in Jenin refugee camp on Saturday.
According to the IDF, forces were present in Jenin refugee camp in order to arrest an “Islamic Jihad operator” who it claimed was involved in terrorist activities, planning, and carrying out shooting attacks against IDF soldiers in that area.
“During the activity, dozens upon dozens of Palestinians hurled explosives and Molotov cocktails towards IDF soldiers and shots were fired. The soldiers responded with live fire to the armed suspects. The hits were identified.”
Nearly daily clashes between Israeli military and Palestinians are raging in the occupied West Bank, particularly in Jenin and Nablus.
Israel has been raiding villages and cities in the occupied West Bank. It claims it is targeting militants and their weapon stashes before they can cross into Israel to carry out attacks. After a series of Israeli attacks, the IDF called the operation “Breaking the Wave”. This year, at least 20 Israelis and other foreigners have been killed in attacks on soldiers and civilians in Israel and West Bank.
According to Palestinian health authorities, more than 105 Palestinians have been murdered by Israeli forces this year. This makes it the most deadly year for Palestinians living in occupied territories since 2015. According to human rights groups, including B’Tselem, Israel claims that most Palestinians killed were engaged violently with soldiers in military operations. However, dozens of civilians unarmed have also been killed.
Tor Wennesland, UN Special Coordinator for Middle East Peace Process, stated that he is concerned by the “deteriorating security situation, which includes the rise in armed clashes among Palestinians and Israeli security force forces in the occupied West Bank including East Jerusalem.”
“The increasing violence in the occupied West Bank is fueling fear, hatred, and anger. It is vital to reduce tensions immediately in order to make space for important initiatives aimed to establish a viable political future,” said Wennesland.
