Dermatologist-approved tips to manage and prevent split ends the right way

Split ends, medically known as trichoptilosis, occur when the protective outer layer of the hair (cuticle) gets damaged (Image: Freepik). Split ends are one of the most common hair concerns—and also one of the most misunderstood. From expensive serums to DIY fixes, people try everything to “repair” them. But what actually works?. To find out, we spoke to dermatologist Dr Shivani Yadav, Founder of Skin Avenue Clinic, who breaks down the causes of split ends and how to manage them properly.. Dr Yadav explains that split ends, medically known as “trichoptilosis,” occur when the outer protective layer of the hair (the cuticle) is damaged. This leads to fraying, where a single strand splits into two or more parts. According to Dr Yadav, everyday habits are often to blame.. “The most common causes include excessive heat styling, frequent chemical treatments, over-washing, harsh shampoos, and environmental factors such as sun exposure, pollution, and humidity,” she explains. Even tight hairstyles and rough towel-drying can weaken hair over time.. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. Can split ends actually be repaired?. Frequent chemical treatments like coloring, rebonding or keratin, over-washing, and harsh shampoos can also lead to split hair (Image: Freepik). This is where most people get it wrong. “Once a hair strand has split, it cannot be permanently repaired,” Dr Yadav says. While many products claim to “seal” split ends, they only offer temporary smoothing.. “The only effective and long-term solution is trimming the damaged portion,” she adds. Regular trims help prevent the split from travelling further up the hair shaft and causing more breakage.. Story continues below this ad. What actually helps manage split ends?. “While you can’t reverse them, you can definitely manage and minimise their appearance,” the dermatologist assures. Dr Yadav recommends starting with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo, followed by a nourishing conditioner. Weekly deep conditioning masks can help restore moisture, while a lightweight serum or leave-in conditioner can smooth the hair and reduce friction.. It’s also important to limit heat styling. “Always use a heat protectant when you do,” she advises. Switching to a wide-tooth comb and detangling gently—especially when hair is wet—can also minimise breakage.. Dermatologist-approved tips to prevent split ends. Prevention is key when it comes to healthy hair. Dr Yadav suggests trimming your hair every 6–8 weeks to keep ends healthy. Reducing heat styling and avoiding excessive chemical treatments can go a long way.. Protecting your hair from environmental stress is equally important. Cover your hair in harsh sun or polluti

Sadhguru tells Alia Bhatt his sleep habits, recalls how they changed after two brain surgeries: ‘I fall dead’

Jaggi Vasudev, popularly known as Sadhguru, recently had a conversation with actor Alia Bhatt in which he disclosed his sleep habits. The founder of the Isha Foundation told Alia, “For almost 27-28 years, I have managed with 2.5-3 hours. But two years ago, I broke my head twice. I cracked my head twice. I went into emergency surgeries. After that, they gave me a lot of sedatives and stuff only for four months. So, I got used to sleeping. Now, I am sleeping for 4-4.5 hours…depends on the day.”. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. Responding to his revelation, an amused Alia exclaimed: “That’s it?”. Sadhguru, 68, responded, “What do you mean…that’s it? That’s fourth of the day”, to which Alia sheepishly added, “I sleep for nine hours”.. How many hours do you sleep? (Photo: Pexels). In his usual satirical tone, Sadhguru shared on his YouTube channel, “I don’t wind myself up. Then I don’t need to unwind. This is a serious problem in the world. Without a tablet, drug or something, people cannot sleep. One thing is, you don’t use your body enough. Whenever I go to bed, whenever it is, I don’t sleep. I fall dead. Your body and brain get better with use.”. Taking a cue from their interesting exchange, we asked an expert for an informed insight.. Dr Sheetal Goyal, consultant neurologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, said for most adults, the general recommendation is 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night for optimal brain and body function. “While a small percentage of people may manage on less sleep due to genetic factors, this is rare. Regularly getting only 4 to 5 hours can, over time, impact memory, mood, immunity, and heart health. It’s important to know the difference between what feels manageable and what is biologically adequate,” said Dr Goyal.. Story continues below this ad. People often feel they’ve adjusted, but studies show otherwise. “Chronic sleep restriction can harm concentration, decision-making, and reaction time even if the person doesn’t feel sleepy. The brain tends to underestimate its own fatigue. So, just because someone feels adapted doesn’t mean the body is functioning at its best.”. Can brain injuries or surgeries change sleep patterns?. Yes, they can, affirmed Dr Goyal. “The brain plays a central role in regulating sleep-wake cycles. Trauma, surgery, or even medications like sedatives can temporarily or sometimes permanently change sleep patterns. In some cases, patients may sleep more, while in others, they might sleep less or have fragmented sleep. However, these changes vary greatly from person to person and should ideally be monitored by a doctor.”. Physical activity does improve sleep quality, but it doesn’t eliminate the need for enough sleep. “Regular exercise can help people fall asleep faster and experience deeper, rest

The rise of cleanfluencers in India: How content creators are redefining civic sense

“They make fun of me, call me crazy. Some of them tell me to clean their drains. Some call me ‘naala saaf karne wala’.”. For Bittu from Biawara in Madhya Pradesh, this is a daily reality. Colloquially known as Bittu Tabahi, the 20-year-old made waves on social media after a video of him stepping into the heavily polluted Ajanar river and pulling out waste with his bare hands went viral.. However, he says, whenever he steps out to clean a littered or polluted area, he becomes a spectacle for the very people he is trying to help. “Whenever I sit by the river, they throw garbage right in front of me,” he says. “If I stop them, they are ready to fight.”. The rise of the “cleanfluencer” in India has made this paradox even clearer. These are people who record the process of cleaning up public places like rivers, ghats, streets, and parks. A lot of people on the Internet like their videos, which often show dramatic before-and-after changes. But their presence also shows that society is uncomfortable with people who show responsibility.. Bittu’s journey began on January 26 when he decided to stop waiting for the government to fix things and start cleaning the river himself.. “I wanted to make a machine to clean the river, but I didn’t have the money. I am a student,” he says. “So I thought, I will clean as much as I can with my own hands.” Since then, he has spent hours every day removing garbage from a 500-metre stretch, often without basic protective gear. The effort has taken a physical toll. “I got infections. The skin on my hands and feet started coming off,” he tells indianexpress.com.. View this post on Instagram. Support, however, has been scarce. “We haven’t received any help,” he says. “People don’t stop littering. I have even put a dustbin there, but they don’t use it.” Instead, he more often encounters disbelief and mockery. “They say, what is this river to you? Why are you doing this?”. The viral video. And yet, this same work recently gained attention on social media when industrialist Anand Mahindra shared a video of Bittu on X. In the video, Bittu is seen wading through filth, dragging out plastic, algae, and debris from a river in his city. The video went viral, earning praise and admiration. But the attention also brought back a familiar accusation, that he was doing this “for likes and views.”. Story continues below this ad. In a country where civic sense is one of the most discussed topics on social media, this discomfort stands out. Videos of people littering, defacing public property, or ignoring basic hygiene norms frequently go viral, sparking outrage and debate. Trends mocking “zero civic sense” regularly dominate timelines. Yet, when individuals step in to address these very issues on the ground, the response is often sceptical or hostile.. Delhi-based environmental content creator Sonali Singh sees this contradiction up close. For her, documenting clean-up drives is

The real story behind Rashmika Mandanna’s viral wedding look: ‘You have 40 minutes…she had not slept enough’

MUA decodes Rashmika Mandanna’s wedding look. (Source: Instagram/@tanvichemburkar). Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda tied the knot in Udaipur this February, effectively breaking the internet with their traditional wedding attire. The social media post featuring the couple in their bridal glory went so viral that it dethroned Virat Kohli’s 2024 T20 victory post to become the most-liked Instagram picture in Asia. In a conversation with podcaster Masoom Minawala, Rashmika Mandanna’s makeup artist, Tanvi Chemburkar, spilled the beans on creating the look that took the digital world by storm.. Proving that sometimes, less is really more, Chemburkar shared that Mandanna wanted to keep her look super clean. “I was like, ‘Really? It’s your wedding day. Don’t you want to add a bit of colour?’ But she was very clear that she wants to keep it very true to how she looks. She has beautiful eyes, so I thought, ‘Let me keep it minimal’.”. Revealing more about the wedding day, she elaborated: “We had an event the previous evening, so she had not slept enough. She came just to cut to cut, and was like, ‘Guys, you all have 40 minutes to get me ready’. But I think overall she must have taken one and a half hours to be fully ready from top to bottom.”. The artist further added, “She was just so clear about what she wanted in terms of styling, makeup and hair; she had a vision, so working with her was so different from what we usually do. She was also really happy, so that translated into the hair and makeup, the styling and everything.”. Tanvi, who had been working with Mandanna for the last four and a half years on editorials and shoots, has seen her evolve from a heavy glam phase to a dewy soft look. “I’ve seen her become comfortable with her skin, with enhancing just the right features, instead of adding a lot. So, we came to this point where we don’t apply the foundation. We just colour, correct and conceal wherever required.”. View this post on Instagram. Bridal makeup tips to note. Sukhmeet Singh, Sr Lecturer, Fashion and Celebrity Makeup and Hair, Pearl Academy said that the wedding day is one of the most photographed days of your life, and your makeup needs to be nothing short of flawless. Whether you’re going for a dewy natural glow or a bold, glamorous look, a little preparation goes a long way:. 1. Prep your skin: Good makeup starts with good skin. Hydration, proper cleansing, and priming are essential. A well-prepped base ensures makeup sits smoothly and lasts longer without cracking or looking patchy.. 2. Choose long-wear products: Wedding days are long, emotional, and full of photography. Opt for long-lasting, waterproof, and HD makeup products that can withstand sweat, tears, and flash photography without causing flashback.. Story continues below this ad. Trainer and Dhurandhar actor Mustafa Ahmed says Katrina Kaif is like the ‘female version’ of Hrithik Roshan: ‘She is so precise…’

Katrina Kaif is dedicated towards fitness, says trainer (Photo: Katrina Kaif/Instagram). Trainer and Dhurandhar actor Mustafa Ahmed recently hailed actor Katrina Kaif‘s “competitive” spirit, stressing that she is really dedicated to the gym. “If I may say so, Katrina is like a woman version of Hrithik Roshan. She is so precise about everything, from eating to training…she is very goal-oriented. If she doesn’t have a purpose to train, she would be like…I am not going to waste my time. So, she is that dedicated. She does the most incredible things.”. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. Explaining with an example, he continued: “For example, if I call a sports therapist for her—which can be quite a painful experience—she’ll ask the therapist, ‘Are you putting as much pressure on me as you would on Mustafa?’ She is that competitive. She’ll even follow up by asking, ‘Am I dealing with it better than he is?’ That is the level of competitiveness she has.”. Taking a cue from the trainer’s candid confession, we asked an expert about how being competitive helps.. Are you consistent with working out? (Photo: Freepik). This conversation highlights a dimension of fitness that goes far beyond physical effort, which is the mindset with which training is approached, mentioned consultant dietitian and fitness expert Garima Goyal.. “High-level fitness is not simply a result of showing up to the gym, but of how deliberately each movement is performed. Precision in form, control over tempo, and awareness of muscle engagement create a far stronger neuromuscular response than mechanical repetition. This is what differentiates individuals who train from those who truly optimise their training,” said Goyal.. A dedicated fitness mindset is also deeply rooted in consistency and cognitive involvement. “When an individual is fully present during a session, there is better motor unit recruitment, improved proprioception, and more efficient movement patterns. Over time, this translates into enhanced strength, reduced injury risk and superior functional performance. It is this level of mental engagement that allows certain individuals to maintain high standards across both fitness and skill-based activities such as dance or sport,” said Goyal.. View this post on Instagram. Another critical aspect is progressive discipline. “This does not mean constantly increasing intensity, but rather refining technique, improving stability, and gradually challenging the body within safe physiological limits. Individuals who are detail-oriented in their training tend to build more sustainable results because they prioritise movement quality over short-term outcomes. This approach also supports joint integrity and long-term musculoskeletal health, which becomes increasingly important with age.”. Story continu
