Matt Damon And Ben Affleck Hit With Defamation Lawsuit Over ‘The Rip’

Florida police officers are suing Matt Damon, Ben Affleck for defamation in relation to their film “The Rip”, which was based on a true case. The Plaintiffs claim that their reputations as law enforcement officers have been damaged by the way they were depicted on the Netflix action/thriller film, released in January 2026. The Rip, starring Damon and Affleck, was produced by Artists Equity. The production company that the two actors founded.

According to a complaint obtained from Entertainment Weekly, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Officers Jonathan Santana, and Jason Smith filed a suit against Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck, through their production company Artists Equity. They cited defamation as a whole and defamation implied over “The Rip.”

According to the filing, “The Rip” was inspired by a 2016 drug bust in Miami Lakes, where officers including Santana, Smith and others seized over $21 million (or even $24 million according to some reports) of cash, the biggest amount ever recovered in Miami-Dade’s history.

Santana, Smith, and Affleck were not mentioned in the film, but the actors claim that the characters of Damon and Affleck are very similar to theirs, and the viewers can infer from this that the roles were based upon the lives of these two people. They claim that the majority of events in the movie did not occur in real life.

‘The Rip’ took creative liberties

In “The Rip”, Damon and Affleck star as Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Damon) and Detective Det. Sgt. J.D. Byrne. The film follows a group who discover a large amount of cash. They are tested on their loyalty and trust and the corruption in the Miami-Dade Police Department is exposed. Steven Yeun is also featured in the film, as are Teyana Taylor and Sasha Calle.

The movie claims to be based on real events. However, the plaintiffs claim that “a large seizure took place” and that “the events depicted in the film were not true.”

Santana and Smith say that their integrity was questioned because of “The Rip” by friends and co-workers. The filing stated that “Viewers associate the Miami-Dade Police Department with Plaintiffs because of the corrupt portrayals shown in ‘The Rip'”.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck: The real story behind the movie

In June 2016, police officers raided a Miami Lakes house and discovered that more than 21 million dollars in cash were hidden in five-gallon buckets. The buckets were found hidden in the attic of the house. In connection with this raid, two siblings, suspected marijuana traffickers Luis Hernandez-Gonzalez, and Salma Hernandez were arrested.

Santana stated in an interview with 7 News Miami that “When you rip a thing, you are stealing it.” The deputy claimed that they never stole a penny. He said he had been praised 10 years earlier for his work, but jokes have started since the release of “The Rip”. “Pretty well saying, you’re asking, how much money did I steal?”

The complaint also listed several scenes from the film where the characters blurred professional and moral boundaries, such as one scene in which Affleck’s character killed a DEA Agent.

The Plaintiffs Received A Letter of Cease-and-Desist

The filing claims that Santana’s and Smith’s attorneys sent a cease-and desist letter to the production company in December asking it not to release “The Rip”. They claimed that they received a reply after the film had already been released on Netflix on 16 January, stating that their claims were “unfounded.”

They portrayed police officers and my clients as dirty. Their reputations have been damaged.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck did their research

TheCelebrityfinder/MEGA

In an interview in January with TODAY Damon and Affleck discussed how they spent some time with real Miami police officers to conduct and prepare for the movie. The two also revealed that a few of the officers played supporting roles in the film.

Joe Carnahan, the writer and director of “The Rip”, said that his friend Chris Casiano inspired him to make the film after showing him photos from a raid his team and he conducted. Carnahan said, “When he showed the photos of the containers they sledgehammered from the wall, I thought, ‘Wow’.” He told Gold Derby. He also added that he believed that officers counting millions in cash in the walls would make a good movie.

Damon and Affleck’s attorneys are yet to reply to the lawsuit.

Macaulay Culkin continues to look back on his intimate bond with the late actress Catherine O’Hara months after her passing.

Now, the former child star is opening up about how her demise left him pondering what could have been if she were alive.

In a recent interview, Culkin admitted that O’Hara’s death came as a shock to him because they had “unfinished business” to handle.

“When Catherine passed away in January, that hit me. That hit me pretty good, ’cause, you know, it was just too soon. And I felt that we had unfinished business,” the actor told Gentleman’s Journal.

Although Culkin didn’t go into detail, he admitted feeling indebted to the late veteran, who was a major presence in his career, starting from his “Home Alone” beginnings.

O’Hara’s guidance was evident when Culkin earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, and she gave an endearing speech at the ceremony. Reflecting on his regret, the “Zootopia” actor said, “I feel like I owed her a favor — and I don’t like having an outstanding debt.”

Eve Plumb Drops Sad ‘Brady Bunch’ Money Confession

For decades, “The Brady Bunch” has remained one of television’s most replayed family sitcoms, turning its cast into permanent pop culture icons long after the series ended.

However, behind the nostalgia and endless reruns, one of the show’s stars is revealing a much sadder reality.

Eve Plumb recently admitted that despite the sitcom’s lasting success across generations, the actors are no longer seeing meaningful money from it.

Her revelation has sparked fresh conversation about how television contracts once worked, especially compared to the massive payouts stars from modern sitcoms still receive today.

‘Brady Bunch’ Star Eve Plumb Reveals The Truth About Residual Checks

Plumb is pulling back the curtain on what “The Brady Bunch” cast actually earned from one of television’s most replayed sitcoms.

The actress, who famously played middle daughter Jan Brady, recently addressed the subject while promoting her memoir, “Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond.”

In the book, Plumb joked about the financial reality behind the show’s lasting popularity. “If I had a dime for every rerun episode, I’d pay off the national deficit. I don’t,” she wrote per the Daily Mail.

Plumb later doubled down on the statement during an appearance on the “PauseRewind” podcast. “To be clear, we don’t make residuals,” she explained.

The revelation shocked many longtime fans, considering “The Brady Bunch” has remained a television staple for decades through syndication and streaming reruns.

The ABC sitcom originally aired from 1969 through 1974, but its cultural footprint never really disappeared.

‘Brady Bunch’ Cast Lost Their Rerun Payments Years Ago

Plumb is not the only “Brady Bunch” star who has spoken openly about the show’s lack of long-term financial rewards.

Susan Olsen, who played Cindy Brady, previously explained why the cast no longer receives rerun money.

Appearing on Oprah Network’s “Where Are They Now,” Olsen revealed that the issue stemmed from television rules that existed before 1973.

According to the star, actors at the time were compensated only for a limited number of rerun broadcasts.

She explained the cast was only “paid for reruns for the first 10 runs.” After that, the payments completely stopped. “So [we’ve] made no money since then,” Olsen said.

The residual checks reportedly dried up entirely in 1979 despite the sitcom continuing to air across networks for decades afterward.

‘Brady Bunch’ Salaries Were Tiny Compared To Modern TV Stars

Barry Williams, who portrayed Greg Brady, also previously addressed the surprisingly modest paychecks the cast received during the sitcom’s original run.

In his 1992 memoir “Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg,” Williams explained how dramatically television salaries have changed since the 1970s.

“Salaries for sitcom actors have changed considerably since the ‘70s,” he wrote. The actor revealed that during the show’s last season, the highest-paid child actor on the series earned just barely over a thousand dollars per week.

“In our fifth and final year, the highest salary among us kids was $1,100 a week,” he shared. Although Williams acknowledged that earning roughly $24,000 during the final season was “not bad for a teenager,” he also noted the money disappeared quickly after taxes, commissions, and family expenses.

“It was enough to indulge in toys, but hardly enough to carry you through the slow periods that inevitably followed,” he explained.

The original cast also included Maureen McCormick, Mike Lookinland, and Christopher Knight, all of whom became permanently linked to their iconic Brady characters.

‘Brady Bunch’ Money Drama Looks Worse Next To ‘Friends’ Success

The whopping financial difference between “The Brady Bunch” cast and modern sitcom stars became even more noticeable after Lisa Kudrow recently discussed “Friends” residuals.

Kudrow admitted that she and her co-stars still earn massive payouts from reruns of the beloved NBC comedy.

The actress, who played Phoebe Buffay from 1994 to 2004, starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and the late Matthew Perry.

Unlike the Brady cast, the “Friends” stars famously negotiated together throughout the show’s run. Their salaries eventually climbed from $22,500 per episode during the first season to a staggering $1 million each by the final two seasons.

Reports have also claimed the cast still earns around $20 million annually from the show’s continued popularity. The stars later reunited for HBO Max’s 2021 reunion special and reportedly received $2.5 million each for the appearance.

Susan Olsen Opens Up About The Downsides Of Playing Cindy Brady

In April 2025, Olsen opened up about the lasting impact of being typecast as Cindy Brady, admitting the role followed her long after “The Brady Bunch” ended.

Speaking on “The Real Brady Bros” podcast with former co-stars Williams and Christopher Knight, Olsen reflected on constantly being cast as the “ditzy” or “stupid” child, saying, “That’s just how my career was, and it was something I had to accept.”

As reported by The Blast, she recalled how frustrating it was to play a character so different from her real personality, with Williams telling her she was “so much smarter” and “edgier” than Cindy.

Olsen also shared that even her son eventually noticed the pattern after watching one of her old Disney movies, joking, “So you always play the stupid child.”

The actress admitted the role affected her deeply as a child, explaining she dreaded returning to public school because classmates treated her like Cindy in real life and teased her over the character’s “stupid” moments and lisp.

Blake Lively Suffers Fresh Court Blow After Justin Baldoni Settlement

Blake Lively’s courtroom war with Justin Baldoni may officially be settled, but the legal drama surrounding “It Ends With Us” is far from over.

Just days after both sides reached a surprise agreement, the actress was hit with another setback when a judge rejected her latest request tied to legal fees and damages.

The ruling comes as tensions continue to boil between the two camps, with Baldoni’s attorneys celebrating the settlement as a major win while Lively’s team insists the actress succeeded in exposing retaliation tactics against her.

Blake Lively suffered another courtroom disappointment on Monday after a judge denied her request to submit additional briefs and evidence connected to her legal fees fight with Justin Baldoni.

According to TMZ, the actress had hoped to provide further arguments before the court finalized any ruling tied to damages or attorney costs following the pair’s recent settlement.

The legal development arrived only days after Lively and Baldoni ended their nearly two-year battle connected to “It Ends With Us.”

Despite the settlement, Lively is still aggressively pursuing compensation tied to Baldoni’s failed $400 million defamation lawsuit against her.

The actress claims she should be awarded legal fees because Baldoni’s countersuit was retaliatory and ultimately dismissed.

Lively is also requesting “compensatory damages tripled, and punitive damages,” according to court filings.

Her legal team had already filed motions earlier in the case but wanted permission to present even more supporting material before the judge shut the request down. The filing itself landed in New York court just three days after the settlement agreement became official.

Blake Lively’s attorneys have remained firm in arguing that the “It Ends With Us” director should face financial penalties for filing the defamation suit against her.

Michael Gottlieb, one of the Hollywood star’s lawyers, argued the court should impose “severe and mandatory penalties against any party who files unsuccessful retaliatory defamation actions against sexual harassment and retaliation complainants.”

He also argued that Lively’s original allegations were protected under California law because they were made through the California Civil Rights Department.

Judge Lewis Liman, who handled both cases, previously sided with Lively on that argument and dismissed Baldoni’s defamation suit last year.

Gottlieb pointed specifically to California Civil Code Section 47.1, saying the law exists to ensure people can “share their experiences with courts, agencies, the press, and others without fear of suit.”

The attorney also requested permission to submit a five-page brief explaining exactly how Lively should receive the money she seeks.

The legislation itself was passed in 2023 following the MeToo movement and remains relatively new within the court system. Meanwhile, Baldoni’s lawyers strongly rejected the idea that their client should pay Lively anything extra.

Even after settling, Lively and Baldoni’s camps are still publicly attacking each other over who truly won the case.

Baldoni’s attorneys called the “Gossip Girl” actress’s effort to recover legal fees “draconian” and argued the director had every right to defend himself in court.

They also accused Lively of attempting to make herself “immune from any culpability for her wrongful acts.” Bryan Freedman, Baldoni’s attorney, described the settlement as a “win and total victory” for his side.

“The court had already dismissed 10 of Ms Lively’s 13 claims, including every sexual harassment claim, every defamation claim, and all claims against the individual defendants,” Freedman said per the Daily Mail, adding, “Ms Lively voluntarily dismissed the rest.”

He also claimed the actress settled because she feared losing at trial, noting, “In our view, they settled because they knew they were going to lose in court.”

Freedman added that the only remaining issue involves “a pending request for fees based on a very narrow issue.”

Lively’s Team Calls Settlement A ‘Resounding Victory’

Despite the fierce statements from Justin Baldoni’s side, Blake Lively’s attorneys painted a very different picture of the outcome.

As reported by The Blast, her lawyers insisted the settlement represented a major success for the actress and her wider mission.

In a statement, her attorneys called the agreement a “resounding victory” for Lively. “By agreeing to this settlement, and waiving their right to appeal, Justin Baldoni and every individual defendant now face personal liability for abusing the legal system to silence and intimidate Ms Lively,” the statement said.

The legal team also argued the settlement destroyed claims that Lively fabricated her allegations, stating, “And by admitting that Ms Lively’s concerns ‘deserved to be heard’ the defendants have ended once and for all the fiction that Ms Lively ‘fabricated’ claims of sexual harassment and retaliation.”

The statement continued, emphasizing Lively’s broader goal throughout the legal war. “From day one Blake Lively’s mission was clear: expose and hold accountable those who weaponize smear campaigns and retaliatory lawsuits to intimidate and silence survivors. That mission continues,” it read.

Blake Lively Walks Away Without Financial Settlement

One of the biggest surprises surrounding the settlement is that Lively reportedly received no direct financial payout.

Earlier this week, reports revealed that no money changed hands despite Lively previously claiming the controversy had devastated both her reputation and business ventures.

The actress alleged in court filings that she lost as much as $40.5 million after being labeled a “mean girl” and a “bully.”

She also claimed she missed out on up to $87.8 million in acting and endorsement opportunities.

According to filings, another $143.5 million was allegedly lost due to reduced profits from her haircare and alcohol brands.

Justin Baldoni’s legal team dismissed those numbers as “pie in the sky” estimates and argued Lively’s damaged reputation stemmed from her own actions.

Terry Crews Told To Make Hollywood Pay Over Treatment

Terry Crews has gone viral after an old clip showed him opening up about how he was allegedly abandoned by Hollywood. The actor claimed the cold treatment came after he spoke out about being reportedly assaulted by his former agent.

Internet users have since shared mixed reactions online, with many calling for him to be protected at all costs, while others insisted he should have made Hollywood pay for how he was treated.

The renewed attention also comes as Terry recently opened up about how he and his wife, Rebecca, endured years of her battle with Parkinson’s disease before he stumbled upon a post about a cutting-edge treatment.

Terry Crews Said Speaking Out Cost Him Work

An old clip of Terry’s appearance on the “Soul Boom” podcast with Rainn Wilson is making the rounds online. In the clip, the “Norbit” actor reflected on the backlash he faced after going public with allegations that his former agent, Adam Venit, assaulted him.

Terry recalled that people initially struggled to believe him because of his size and pressed him about what he was trying to achieve by speaking out. He went on to say that while he stood his ground, the decision cost him financially, as the checks stopped coming in.

Terry revealed that he reported the said assault to the agency and was told it was being handled. However, according to him, the only thing he received afterward was silence.

Things remained the same until about a year later, when Terry teased what had been going on in a tweet. Shortly afterward, he received a call from the agency looking to iron out the situation. However, the matter had seemingly escalated by then, as many others had also come forward to share similar stories.

Terry explained that the agency still would not take action against the “predator in [the] hallway.”  However, he noted during the interview that his vulnerability resulted in him being pushed out by Hollywood, as many industry bigwigs allegedly turned away from him.

“Abusers protect each other in Hollywood,” he said.

Internet users have taken to social media to share mixed reactions to the resurfaced clip, with many praising Terry for being vulnerable, while others were less sympathetic to his plight.

“Can you believe the man is violated and they want Him to shut up!!!!! That’s just sick,” one X user wrote, while another added, “Wow, they tried to act like his case wasn’t successful. I’m glad other people also confessed, and he won the case.”

Others had a more critical take.

“If you’re assaulted in front of your family and a room full of white people, you should have beaten his -ss in front of all those witnesses in self-defense and sued him for millions of dollars!!!” one user penned.

Terry And Rebecca Open Up About Health Scare

Terry and his wife, Rebecca, recently opened up about the storms and trials they’ve had to endure in their home, particularly with her Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2015.

In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine, they spoke about the ordeal of dealing with the health scare. Rebecca recalled reaching a breaking point after going three days without sleep. Terry later walked in to show her a post about a groundbreaking, noninvasive treatment known as focused ultrasound, which he believed could help her.

“I’d been reading about this and researching it for ten years,” he recalled. It turned out he was right, and she was able to start getting better.

Terry’s Daughter Narrates Incident With ‘Creepy’ Actor

Meanwhile, Terry and Rebecca’s daughter Azriél took to social media earlier this year to narrate how a “creepy” actor hit on her when she was just 16. At the time, she explained that she met the famous star at a “pre-wedding yacht party” but refused to mention his name.

“He was very well aware of my age,” she recalled in the clip. “He was friendly at first, and I was a fan of his work, so I was actually really excited to meet him.”

Azriél said the actor later sat beside her at the ceremony despite seats being unassigned, which she described as her “first official red flag.” She claimed he then touched her back, smiled “creepily” at her, and made an uncomfortable remark while pressing his knee against hers.

Ryan Reynolds Calls Blake Lively ‘Fearless’ In Mother’s Day Tribute After Justin Baldoni Settlement

The legal dispute between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni has finally cooled down. However, the actress still finds herself in the spotlight.

After settling the lawsuit over ” This Ends with Us,” Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds showed his support in a public way.

The actor shared intimate family moments on Mother’s Day, praising his wife for being “fearless”. This shows that, despite months’ worth of controversy, this Hollywood couple remains united as they enter their next chapter.

Blake Lively receives emotional praise from Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds has made it clear that, after Blake Lively’s most difficult period in her career, he stands firmly by her side.

The “Deadpool’ star posted a sweet Mother’s Day tribute to his Instagram Stories, featuring two candid pictures of the couple.

In one photo, the two posed in yellow ponchos and smiled while standing in front of Niagara Falls.

A second photo showed them sitting in blue chairs with Reynolds wearing sunglasses and Lively in a brown sweater and blue sweatpants.

Reynolds wrote: “I am grateful for this mother in the most profound way.” She is a kind woman. She is brave. She is the absolute love in my life, and for our four children she is the love of their lives.”

Lively then reposted her tribute to Stories, and replied sweetly: “I’m pretty fond of you as well.”

Blake Lively, who was celebrating her mother at the same time as Reynolds, also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the mothers of her own life.

Along with a single photo, the “Gossip girl” actress shared a message of love to her mother Elaine Lively.

Lively wrote, “Happy Mother’s Day, to the woman who chooses happiness every day no matter what,” She added, “I’ll always be grateful for the strength and defiance of that woman, especially as I age.” She makes each day special for those around her. “Especially her grandchildren and babies.”

She also praised the creativity and optimism of her mother, writing: “She’s not just beautiful; she creates beauty with her hands, stories, playfulness, creativity, incredible ingenuity, and her love.”

Lively uploaded a second picture featuring Elaine and Tammy Stewart. She wrote: “These two queens, they are my mothers.” “I could not be more lucky to have them.” “The best part, I know,’ my mother has always said.

Blake Lively Returns to the Met Gala after Settlement Bombshell

Instagram Stories | Blake Lively

The Mother’s Day messages arrived less than one week after Blake Lively stunned fans with her Met Gala appearance.

After hearing that Baldoni and she had settled their bitter court battle over “It Ends With Us,” the Hollywood star attended Fashion’s Biggest Night.

Lively walked alone down the red carpet in a dramatic Atelier Versace gown from an archive. In an interview she confessed that she felt shy and wished she could have brought her four children with her to the event.

The settlement was reached just weeks before her planned trial on May 18, and after the judge “gutted” important portions of 2024’s sexual harassment and retaliation suit.

Lively is pursuing her legal fees even though she has not received any financial compensation from Baldoni.

Sigrid McCawley told Entertainment Tonight later that the actress “moved on” in her life and that her Met Gala appearance proved that she “stands up and is not silenced.”

We would not want a woman in such a position to be silenced. McCawley said that women in such a position should “be out and about living their lives”.

Lively faces new attacks from Baldoni’s lawyer

The public war between the two camps continues even after the settlement. Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman claimed recently that Blake Lively had settled because she was “too scared” to testify.

She was afraid to testify at trial. Freedman said that Blake did not want to be cross-examined by anyone, because it would have required her to tell the whole truth.

The lawyer said that a trial “would have exposed her lies” as well as claiming the actress “won nothing” from the deal.

McCawley, meanwhile, defended Lively and said she plans to “expose the digital retaliation here that has been weaponized against [her]”.

McCawley also called the actress “incredibly brave” because she spoke out. McCawley said that the actress would continue to be brave and bold in her current situation.

Blake Lively’s legal fallout still pulls Reynolds into the spotlight

ZUMAPRESS.com/MEGA

Although Lively and Baldoni’s courtroom battle has been officially settled, the fallout from the case continues to unfold publicly.

The focus of attention now is on how deeply Reynolds was involved in the dispute.

During the legal battle, Baldoni claimed that Reynolds “swore” and “berated him in an abusive tirade” at a 2023 meeting which took place in the couple’s New York Penthouse.

Baldoni claims that Reynolds was present at the meeting in Lively’s role as “representative”, while the concerns regarding the set of the film “It Ends With Us”, were being discussed.

Drama only increased when Reynolds was allegedly seen in unsealed texts referring to Baldoni’s “dumb-dumb”, during private conversations relating to the feud.

Lively, meanwhile, has been trying to make a public statement with her appearances at the Met Gala as well as her Mother’s Day tributes.

Baldoni, meanwhile, has begun to reappear in public following the announcement of the settlement. Recently, the filmmaker was photographed holding hands and smiling with his wife Emily during a Nashville outing.

After a long legal battle, he has reportedly decided to “move forward” with his family.
