How two Indian creatives are challenging the rules around women’s bodies through fashion and photography

Rohit Mane’s fascination with clothing began when he watched his mother buy saris at Satara, Maharashtra. He was originally destined for a medical career, but he convinced his parents to let him study fashion design in Delhi before moving to Nottingham Trent University on an exchange. Keerthana Kunnath also made a similar journey. She left her hometown of Kozhikode in Kerala to study fashion, lifestyle accessory design, and image-making at the London College of Fashion. Both live in London today and have developed practices that challenge the norms around women’s body through fashion and photography. Mane’s work, which fuses South Asian references and dystopian aesthetics with his Indian heritage, uses his body as a canvas for his hyperfeminine designs. Kunnath’s ongoing project Not What You Seen focuses on female bodybuilders from South India. She documents the female form outside of conventional notions of femininity. Together, they ask how the rules surrounding women’s bodies can be resisted and remade. The two London-based creatives explore the origins of this preoccupation in a conversation that alternates between bantering and heartfelt confessions. Vogue India: Your practices focus on the female body, but from very different angles. What inspired you to explore this?RohitMane: I was raised in Satara, India with my mother and sister. We spent a lot of our time together in a culture that was very controlling when it came to what women wore. I’ve always been a rebel. I wanted to create a look that would represent my art, but also make a statement against these standards. This look is from Rohit Mane’s Queens of the Cosmos Collection, and it channels the rhythm of ocean wave, as if the entire body were caught in mid-tide. SIMRAN KAURKeerthana KUNNATH: I grew in Kerala and watched Malayalam films and read local magazines. Many of the narratives were demeaning to women. They gave us a template of what they thought a “good woman” should be. This was not in line with my understanding of womanhood. The medium of photography became the way I explored these questions. As I was scrolling down Instagram, I came across a woman bodybuilder from Kerala. You are supposed to feel radical when you come from an environment like that and push against everything. I wanted to learn more about their experiences, so this series was born.Vogue India asked: How do you balance the line between appreciation of the female body and objectification?

I drink beet juice during and before my period – here’s everything it’s done for me

Beets, a dark red tuber with a sweet earthy taste, have been making their way into smoothie glasses and wellness kitchens. I’ve never thought about it. I just accepted it as healthy and ate it occasionally. I read an article at the end of the year about the link between beets and women’s health. Since then, I drink a glass every day, particularly before and during my periods. How much beet is needed and why not eat the beet instead? But let’s start by stating the obvious: you could eat beet. You would need to consume two to three medium-sized potatoes a day to get the same amount (we will discuss the benefits of this macronutrient shortly) of nitrates as a glassful of juice. You could drink 250 millilitres instead. The juice makes it easier to absorb the valuable ingredients. In the scientific studies on vascular disease, participants drank 250 to 500 millilitres per day of beet. This is equivalent to 300-600 milligrams nitrate per day, which is a dose that has been shown in numerous studies to be effective. I drink 200 to 250 millilitres per day, every week, before and during my cycle. Drinking too much can cause stomach problems, bloating, or diarrhea. I prefer beets juice from organic markets, preferably without any added sugar or concentrates. Why I drink beets juice, especially during period?Beets juice is not only talked about for its potential to relieve PMS, but also contains many nutrients that are important during menstruation. Iron is one of them. During menstruation the body loses large amounts of blood, and therefore iron. However, this trace element plays a crucial role in the formation of red cells and the transport of oxygen within the body. The beet tuber contains iron and folate, two nutrients involved in blood formation that can help reduce fatigue. I try to supply my body with iron and folic acid in the days before my period so that iron loss during bleeding can better be compensated. Beets also contain a variety of vitamins and minerals which support energy metabolism, and are involved in cell formation. B vitamins are essential for many metabolic processes within the body. It’s not surprising that people reach for beets when they are tired or exhausted. (Like me, during the days leading up to my period, I was very tired). Beet juice benefits for hearthealthNitrate is another exciting, if it is not the most exciting, ingredient in beet. In the body, the nitrates become nitric dioxide, which dilates blood vessels, and therefore can improve blood circulation. The increased blood flow will also improve the oxygenation of muscles and tissues. This could theoretically reduce cramps and fatigue, which are the two main symptoms I experience during my luteal or menstrual phases.

I am a fashion editor at Vogue and these are the homegrown brands I cannot stop talking about

As a fashion editor, you become a sort of unofficial help desk when it comes to getting dressed. You are constantly flooded with questions about what to wear, how to style it and which local brands are worth investing in. As a stylist you develop a shorthand of clothes. The brands that I return to are not always the most popular. They are the ones who understand proportion, fabric, climate, comfort and that very specific sweet spot between looking put-together and not looking like you tried to assemble a personality from a moodboard. These are the brands that get proportion, fabric, climate and comfort right. They also know how to strike that perfect balance between looking put together and not like you’re trying to assemble your personality from a moodboard. These labels are my favorites right now. From handloom shirts to prints that feel desirable and elevated foundational pieces, I can’t stop talking about them. Itoh is very aware of this need. Itoh’s clothes are in the perfect space between quality basics, and feel-good fabrics. The garments have enough style to keep a look together, without pushing everything else out of focus. If done badly, it could make even the most confident person look like they’ve accidentally stumbled into a lifestyle catalog. If done well, it can breathe new life into a wardrobe which may have become too dependent on neutrals or basics. Cord’s prints are warm, charming, and nostalgic, but not costume-like. That is the point.

Alia Bhatt just carried Gucci’s most coveted bag at Cannes 2026

Alia Bhatt’s arrival at Cannes 2026 was a very contemporary look. Bhatt opted for a monochromatic look, leaving behind the theatrical excess. From the airport terminal to Croisette, it was black on black. She was silent and flawless as she carried the Gucci handbag on her arm, which today seems to represent fashion’s collective desire. The Gucci Jackie 1961 bag.Getty ImagesAfterall, some bags transcend eras. Some bags define them, while others do not. The Jackie is in the second category. It was originally a hobo-shaped model with a soft shape. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis named it after her, and in the 1970s she almost unwittingly made it a cult item. She carried it under arm with a sophisticated nonchalance which is still impossible to replicate today. Since then, the Jackie 1961 has endured fashion seasons without ever losing it’s visual lexicon. The curved, enveloping form. The metal plunger is used as an identification clasp. The soft, recognisable shape has been reinterpreted by different Gucci creative director over the years without betraying its original nature. Demna Gvasalia is the next creative director to take on this iconic silhouette. Her vision is reflected in her timely intervention. Just enough to move Jackie’s center of gravity in the spirit of the time. Demna applies one of her most recognisable aesthetic codes – the worn-out, emotional effect of objects, to the most sought-after Gucci bag from yesterday and today. The result is Jackie that looks like it’s been loved. This choice is a logical one in an age of vintage obsession, when the search for rare pieces at French flea markets and small, forgotten shops can be archeological. Fashion today is no longer obsessed with perfection. It is more interested in objects that have a personal, authentic appearance. Accessories that tell a story even after they have left the boutique. This is where the new Jackie 1961 finds it’s narrative power: the very soft, grainy, leather that folds into itself, this deliberately imperfect slouchy look, and that used aesthetic which restores emotional depths to a symbol for luxury.
