Modern Metagames Breakdown
Modern is Magic’s most competitive format. It uses cards from core sets and expansion sets as well as straight-to Modern sets starting with Eighth Edition. The card pool is rich and diverse, with 23 years’ history. The decks used at the Pro Tour are broken down.
Marvel Super Heroes event page at the start of Round 4 on Friday, July 17, around 2 p.m. CEST. Here’s a look at some of the decks that were most popular during the event.
Boros Energy (46): Boros Energy uses the power of Guide of Souls, Galvanic discharge and the energy mechanics to control the battlefield. Ocelot pride and Ajani Nacatl Pariah provide a constant barrage of feline power, while Goblin Bombardment transforms Ajani to a powerful planeswalker.
Izzet Affinity (46): Izzet Affinity is a game that thrives off artifact synergies. When you reach a certain number of artifacts in your deck, Mox Opal can accelerate mana production, Kappa Cannoneer becomes an unstoppable force, and Pinnacle Emissary allows you to flood the board. Weapons Manufacturing is a staple in almost every list. Its Munitions Tokens can supercharge Kappa Cannoneer and grow Constructs, while Engineered Explosives, for X=0, will translate into deadly damage.
Broodscale (42 players). Broodscale is a combo that combines Blade of the Bloodchief with Basking Broodscale. The Blade is triggered by sacrificing an Eldrazi Spawn to gain mana. This counter will be added to the Broodscale and create another Eldrazi Spawn. The loop creates an infinitely big Broodscale, and endless mana. This deck can win by using Urza’s Saga Construct tokens to attack or ramp into Emrakul the Promised End. All Broodscale combo decks have a common core. However, their flex slots allow for some customization. Some decks use Writhing Chrysalis and Unholy Heat. Some lists use Ugin’s Labyrinth or Devourer of Destiny. Some versions are black splashed! Every build offers infinite combinations.
Eldrazi Tron (35): Eldrazi Tron uses the legendary trio of Urza’s Lands, Eldrazi Temple and Ugin’s Labyrinth in order to create a large amount of colorless Mana. The mana generated by this deck is used to fuel powerful cards such as Karn, Great Creator, Kozilek’s Command, Devourer Of Destiny, and Ugin Eye of Storms. Ugin is a deck that relies on artifacts and disruptive cards to stop the opponent from achieving their goals.
Esper Goryo (33 players). Esper Goryo aims to return Atraxa to the field with Goryo’s Vengeance by discarding Atraxa to either Psychic Frog, or Faithful Repair. It gives you a huge lifelinking and new cards. Ephemerate then grants Atraxa another trigger, ensuring that she will not be exiled by the end of turn. Solitude, Thoughtseize and Force of Negation can be used to pivot the deck into a control role.
Amulet Titan: This deck is designed around the synergistic effect of Amulet of Vigor with bounce lands such as Gruul Turf. Amulet of Vigor allows these lands to enter the game untapped, and produce additional mana. This allows you to play a Primeval Titan early. Titan is able to fetch Hanweir battlements, which can change the tide of a game. Scapeshift is a powerful way to increase mana in Amulet Titan Decks, particularly when used with Aftermath Analyzer. After Lotus Field’s ban in May, infinite mana loops became more complex. Amulet Titan experts will show their intricate strategies at the Pro Tour.
Izzet prowess: Izzet is designed for speed. Preordain, along with other inexpensive cantrips, will help you to churn out spells and buff creatures after you’ve led the game on your first turn. A Cori-Steel Cutter dropped on turn 2 and followed by a Mishra’s Bauble will also help you generate a lot of Monk tokens.
Ruby Storm (16 Players): Ruby Storm, centered around Ral the Monsoon mage and Ruby Medallion is an incredibly fast deck. Spells such as Pyretic Ritual or Desperate Ritual only cost one red mana when either of these cards is on the field, allowing you to unlock a huge mana boost. This cost reduction applies also to spells that give you an advantage, such as Reckless Impulse or Wrenn’s Resolve. You can then re-use your entire library. It’s best to use Past in Flames and cast many spells at once, then flash them all back. Then, finish with Grapeshot.
Simic Neoform (14): Simic Neoform tries to exile two green cards and cast Allosaurus Rider without spending any mana. Then you can upgrade the creature into one that wins games with Eldritch Evolution or Neoform. Ghalta the Stampede Tyrant is your first target. He can overwhelm your opponent’s board with an array of finishing moves. Ghalta can be converted into 12 cards and 12 lives by Disciple Of Freyalise, while Xenagos God of Revels quickly transforms Ghalta to a 24/24 Trampler.
Eldrazi Ramp (12 Players): Eldrazi Ramp uses two-mana land types like Eldrazi Temple or Ugin’s Labyrinth to get Emrakul the Promised End cast as quickly as possible. Malevolent Ramp and Kozilek’s Command can be used to provide Eldrazi Spawn and reduce Emrakul’s cost at the same time by filling up graveyards with cards. As an alternative to Slumbering Trodder, three-quarters (75%) of Eldrazi Ramp users use Fight Rigging.
Esper-Blink (12 players). Esper-Blink combines Quantum Riddler, Ephemerate or Phelia the Exuberant Shepherd. Solitude, Overlord and Balemurk are also included in most versions as attractive blink targets.
Boros land destruction (9 players) is relatively new to the Modern metagame. You can easily overwhelm your opponents with the destruction of their lands. Most Modern decks only run two or three basic basic lands. Path to Exile and Erode become instant one-mana removals spells. Cleansing Wildfire is also converted into a hard-land destruction effect.
Domain Zoo (8-players): Domain Zoo, a deck of disruptive aggro cards that uses a set of basic lands (two or three types), unleashes the full power of Scion of Draco. Territorial Kavu can also be included. Leyline of Guildpact makes the manabase painless. Scion of Draco grants your team first strike, trample, hexproof and lifelink.
Jeskai Control (seven players): Jeskai Control aims to control the pace of play through countermagic and spells that draw cards. Kaheera the Orphanguard is a common companion in most builds. She can also imprint Orim’s Chant on the Isochron Scepter, which will lock out opponents. The victory will be achieved slowly and methodically.
This time, only one player used the winning deck from last year’s Modern Pro Tour: Tameshi. Michael Plummer won the Pro Tour with this archetype last year. However, the deck’s overall performance at the event was not impressive.
This Pro Tour features dozens of decks that are mostly well-established. The combo and aggro decks are more prevalent than the midrange, ramp, control or other strategies. The metagame has not seen a new archetype emerge, nor have the newly unbanned card had a major impact. Only eight Violent Outburst copies are found in all Pro Tour Decklists. Umezawa’s Jitte is not present.
The distribution of decks is more in line with the expectation based on the tournaments held during the weeks preceding the Pro Tour. Boros Energy, Izzet affinity and other top contenders in the format had been established for some time. They finished the Pro Tour tied with each other. With 12.7% each, there is a wide variety of decks and neither one stands out.
Broodscale, Eldrazi Tron and Esper Goryos all had slightly better numbers than anticipated, reflecting their explosive combo finishes, as well as powerful mana accelerators. The archetypes that were most popular with experienced players who had four or more top finishes also showed a high level of popularity. This suggests that testing and extensive playtesting convinced them that they would be well-positioned to take on Boros Energy, as well as the expected field.
Kozilek Command
Eldrazi Temple
Kozilek’s Command is the most played non-land card overall in main decks. It’s arguably the best card of the format. Each Broodscale combo, Eldrazi Tron and Eldrazi Ramp has the complete playset, along with four copies of Eldrazi Temple. Kozilek’s Commands is a potent combination of card selection, mana acceleration and graveyard hatred. With 89 participants representing 24.6%, this package will be a popular choice for tournaments.
Ragavan the Nimble Pilferer, Solitude and Malevolent Rumble are also popular main-deck cards. While Consign to Memory is the most played sideboard card, it’s not surprising that this remains so. This paints the picture that Modern is a format that values efficiency. The most popular decks are those which maximize one-mana interactions, cheap interaction and streamlined card choices.
The Most Played Cards in Recent Sets
Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was legal at last year’s Modern Pro Tour nine months ago, have introduced a wealth of powerful new cards that have both enabled new archetypes and strengthened existing ones. Marvel Super Heroes from sets released since the last Modern Pro Tour, along with their total number of copies, broken down between main deck and sideboard appearances. For brevity, I have listed the sets by their three-letter code.
Roku: The Legend of Roku
The Legend of Roku is the newcomer that has seen the highest number of plays in the last nine months. This includes both main decks as well as sideboards. The Legend of Roku was one of Boros Energy’s most popular mid-game engines after the Phlage, Titan of Fire Fury ban. The Saga is also featured in several Boros Land Destruction Decks. It’s used in a variety of decks as an extra copy or two, and with 72 copies spread across 47 different decklists.
Hex Magic
Hex Magic is, however, the card that has been played most often in Modern, according to total copies only across all main decks. This card is a four or three of each in every Ruby Storm deck for this weekend’s event. It usually fills the slots previously held by Glimpse The Impossible, and Flashback. Hex Magic can be used to draw cards at the beginning of your combo or the previous turn. It is quite realistic to “draw” 5 or 6 cards with 3 mana. It’s also one of the new Arcane Cards in recent years. This means you can add Desperate Ritual to Hex Magic and get a mana for free.
Skateboard
Skateboard is a card that has been used consistently as an Izzet Affinity one-of, and it’s purpose has always been to speed up the creation of a Construct token. The typical play sequence is to use Urza’s Saga in turn 2, create Construct tokens the next two turns, then tutor up Equipment immediately. Skateboard, the newest card in the Pro Tour and the one that is used by most decks at least once each, represents the slightest upgrade over Lavaspur Boots. Players determined, however, that in many cases, tapping down a blocker was more important than giving ward 1 to an opponent.
The Wistful Feeling
Most Simic Neoform and Living End players have at least one Wistfulness. This card is a great way to deal with artifacts, enchantments or other problematic cards. It also offers a cheap and easy way to draw and throw away. Its unique combination of powers makes it an excellent addition to decks.
Erode
Prices of Freedom
Avengers Disassembled
Avatar: The Last Airbender(tm), Erode from Secrets of Strixhaven, and Avengers Disassembled from Magic: The Gathering Boros Land Destruction strips away an opponent’s basic land, leaving them without any to fetch.
The Slumbering Trudge
Slumbering Trudge is the final card that I would like to mention. This card was chosen by nine Eldrazi Ramp participants along with Fight Rigging, and Fanatic Of Rhonas. Trudge is a technically 6/6 for one mana. It can create game-ending effects. Imagine that you cast Slumbering Troudge in turn 1, placing three stain counters onto the massive creature. You play Ugin’s Labyrinth on turn 2, exile Drowner of Truth and then cast Fight Rigging. Fight Rigging should find a card that will pay off in a big way, like Emrakul the Promised End, or Ulamog the Ceaseless hunger, among your top five library cards. You then move into combat and put a counter of +1/+1 on Slumbering Trudge. The exiled card is cast for free. This is the type of sequence which can turn Eldrazi ramp into an unstoppable power.
Here’s a little something for the curious:
Boomerang Basics was found in Izzet Prowess 10, Izzet Affinity and Grixis Shadow.
Moonshadow was found in two Hollow One decks, one Domain Zoo and one Grixis Shadow.
Badgermole cub appeared in two Golgari Yawgmoth decks, one Devoted Druid Combo and one Selesnya ritual card.
Wan Shi Tong the Librarian was in one Jeskai Control deck, one Esper Control deck, and one Azorius Control.
The decks that included End of the Hunt were 4 Esper Goryo, 1 Boros Energy and 1 Esper Blink.
Two Living End decks featured Deceit.
Three Domain Zoo decks included Practiced Offense.
The Formidable Speaker was found in two Living End decks and one Golgari Yawgmoth.
Mjolnir – Hammer of Thor was included in five Amulet titan decks.
Witherbloom charm appeared in one Samwise Gamgee Combo deck, as well as 1 Golgari Neo and 1 Golgari Yaghmoth.
Loki the God of Mischief was featured in one Azorius Loki Deck.
Krang, Master Mind was in one Izzet Affinity Deck.
Pro Tour decklists also included a number of additional cards, either as a one-of-two inclusion or as supplementary fringe cards.
It will be interesting to see if any of these new additions are able to rise above their competition by this weekend and take a place at the very top of the tables.
Modern Masterminds is coming!
It’s time for archetypes of all kinds to compete for the top spot. In my native Netherlands this weekend, I will be on the news desk, providing deeper insights and numbers about the Modern Metagame, decks and cards, interactions and winning rates during the entire tournament.

Chloe Fineman Leaves ‘SNL’ After 7 Seasons
Chloe Fineman leaves “Saturday Night Live”.
After seven seasons, the actor and comedian best known for his impressions leaves NBC’s sketch comedy show.
Fineman announced her departure in an Instagram post that read: “After seven wonderful seasons with SNL, I’ve decided it is time to move on.” It’s hard for her to say goodbye, but she concluded that it was the right decision. It’s going to be hard for me. “But the people working there are my family, and this place is my home. I know that I won’t be far from them.”
Fineman was the first cast member of “SNL” to depart the show before Season 52. Yang left the show in Season 51. Casting is usually finalized by early September – just a few weeks before season premiere. Uncertain is how many new actors will join the cast before the season premiere.
Fineman was hired by Studio 8H as a newcomer in 2019. She joined the ranks of Studio 8H in 2019. Fineman became well-known for her wide range of impressions. These included Jennifer Coolidge and Timothee Chalamet as well as Drew Barrymore. Britney Spears, JoJo Siwa, Drew Barrymore were all among them.
You can read her entire post below.
It’s now time to move on.
I know it’s cliché, but my experience at SNL was the most rewarding of all. It’s hard to believe that I was able to become a member of this amazing team. The moment I entered the building, I was in love. Lorne, if this is on your burner I’d like you to know I will always be indebted to you.
Each day, I had the good fortune to work with the very best in the industry. I watched them at their jobs and was always amazed. In 10 hours, I sewed a Jojo Siwa outfit. Write a cold opening at 2pm Saturday afternoon. The VFX for a video is finished minutes before the dress.
It’s not my first time observing this, but I find it funny now that you can look back on it. You get so involved in the work you do. When your sketch doesn’t get picked, you sob uncontrollably. You storm into the office of a producer and tell them that they have just committed their biggest error in life. Call everyone to express your displeasure. You look back at the sketch a few more years and realize that it was “lipsticks for thincc dogs.”
That’s only the show. It’s so important to you that you will give your all, even if it is stupid. You’re thrilled when things work out, and you are devastated when they don’t. In the end, it’s not that important but at the time it was.
I’m really sad to be leaving SNL, but this feels like the right moment. It’s going to be hard for me. The people there are like my family, the place I call home. I won’t be far from them.
One day in the near future they will make lipsticks for dogs.

Christopher Nolan Movies Ranked From Worst to Best
It’s now time to evaluate all the films of Christopher Nolan, from worst to greatest. It wasn’t a simple task. Nolan’s list of 13 films ranges from historical dramas like Dunkirk and Oppenheimer to thrillers such as Interstellar and Tenet to mysteries, including The Prestige and Memento, to his Batman Trilogy. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has become one the best in the business, and one of few to be able to fill theaters on opening weekends. He is also one of the only remaining refuges for mature cinema lovers. From weakest to strongest, here are Nolan’s movies.
13. Insomnia (2002)
Nolan’s “worst film” is actually quite good, and well worth watching. Insomnia, a remake from the Norwegian version of the same name, is notable for being the first film Nolan has directed without him writing or co-writing it. In this film, an experienced Los Angeles detective, Al Pacino (played by Al Pacino), teams up with Hilary Swank (played by Hilary Swank), to investigate a remote Alaskan murder. This is a moody, effective detective drama. However, it doesn’t have Nolan’s usual ambition and seems like an unpaid job.
12. Tenet (2020).
John David Washington’s performance as an agent trying to stop World War III, a conflict between the past and the future (dubbed as “The Protagonist” is quite amusing) is impressive. Tenet is Nolan at his most annoying — with an oppressive soundtrack that overshadows the dialogue, stylish but flat characters and a story that twists to a point of confusion. Tenet gets some superficial points, however. It looks cool, sounds cool, and tries to be original in its approach to time travel. (THR’s review.)
11. Follow (1998)
Nolan’s first feature film, which was made for an estimated $6,000, demonstrated all of the promise that the director, who at 20-something, had. In black and white, Nolan explored themes that he would explore in the decades ahead. The film’s main character is an alienated, single-minded obsession who adheres to a strict code. It has an unexpected third act, and the dialogue is smart and expositional. This feels very Nolan. This feature is about a man that follows strangers in London, and finds himself embroiled into more than expected when he breaks his rule to never follow anyone twice. Some might say that it is not a full-length film because it only lasts 70 minutes. But Nolan, who spent three years scraping together the movie, says it is just as good as any of his other films.
10. The Dark Knight Rises (2012 )
Tom Hardy does a great job as Bane, the menacing terrorist. He also manages to pull off the difficult task of following Heath Ledger’s Joker. The climax of Nolan’s Batman trilogy also has some great sequences, such as the plane hijacking opening and Bruce’s courtroom trial. The film also deserves praise for its bold storylines. Criminals taking control of Gotham City and keeping it that way for several months is an ambitious plotline (as long as one doesn’t question the plausibility of the police being trapped in the sewer for so many months). The conclusion of the Batman Trilogy is just fine.
9. Memento (2000)
Nolan’s second effort, based on the story of his brother Jonathan, is a noir thriller with Guy Pearce in the role of a man who cannot make new memories and tries to solve the murder. This is a puzzle of a film that shows a director who has the ability to blend a genre film with a narrative that can be challenging and still make it accessible. The result? An ending that will stay in your mind.
8. Dunkirk (2017)
Dunkirk has a masterful production from the very beginning. The first shot is a smash cut onto a busy street, with leaflets falling and a clock ticking as British World War II troops try to escape France while German forces are closing in. Nolan’s ability to stage action creates one riveting sequence after another. Nolan’s use of cinematic techniques to draw us in is hampered by the fact that many heroes are unknowable or interchangeable. (THR’s review.)
7. Batman Begins (2005 )
Batman Begins’ first hour is not only an excellent start to a mature Dark Knight Trilogy, but it also represents a reimagining of superhero films as larger-than life crime dramas, with real-world effects, instead of CGI fueled, quip-filled dramedies that save the world. Christian Bale proved to be a worthy successor of the cowl, and Michael Caine was never a more convincing Alfred. The film’s last act is a little stumbling.
6. Inception (2010)
Nolan’s home run rate is on the rise. The director brings together many of his talents in Inception, a blockbuster that is highly original. It follows Leonardo DiCaprio’s character as he steals data from the subconscious to benefit corporate clients. The film is visually stunning, extremely clever and features the coolest end of any filmmaker. Hans Zimmer’s music became famous for the iconic “bwaaaahm” but is also one of his greatest works, and was denied an Oscar for best score (listen to Time). (THR’s review.)
5. Interstellar (2014)
Nolan has been accused by many of being cold and he can be. Matthew McConaughey is a powerful astronaut, who sacrifices his relationship with Jessica Chastain and Mackenzie Foy to find a new planet to replace the dying Earth. His performance in this film was anything but cold. The story may have some holes but the combination of 2001: A Space Odyssey inspired cinematic wonder with emotional weight makes this Nolan film one of his most popular titles. Its reputation has only grown since it was released. (THR’s review.)
4. The Prestige (2006)
It’s a wonderful mystery, The Prestige. Based on Christopher Priest’s novel of dueling obsessive turn-of the-century magicians. With great performances from a dogmatic Bale and a scorching Hugh Jackman (“You don’t even know?”) as well as an all-too-wise Caine. !”),, and a Caine who is all too wise. It’s a perfect script by the Nolan Brothers, who use voiceovers and narration in a way that is confident and compelling. There’s a twist at the end you’ll never see coming. It was initially a modest success, but has since grown to be a Nolan fan’s favorite.
3. Oppenheimer (2023)
Oppenheimer’s final act is overlong, too chatty, and men argue over security clearances at tables. (Imagine that Batman beat Scarecrow and spent 40 more minutes discussing the best way to fix Gotham City’s monorail damaged system. Nolan has created a masterpiece with a real urgency that his more pulpy movies lack. Based on American Prometheus by Nolan, the movie tells the tale of an important historical figure. It champions science, and it reminds us of the dangers that weapons of mass devastation pose. Ludwig Goransson’s score is one of the most beautiful for Nolan films. Nolan’s horrifying post-Trinity Test pep rally is one of the smartest and most powerful scenes in his career. The review of and the cover story for THR.
2. The Odyssey 2026
Nolan’s cinematic skills are used to adapt Homer’s 2,800 year-old story in a manner that feels both contemporary and grounded. Its herculean production and almost absurdly crowded cast make it feel like an homage to Hollywood’s sandal-and-toga classics of the mid-century, such as Spartacus or Ben-Hur. (One half is expecting Peter Ustinov). Nolan creates one spectacular set piece after another for Matt Damon to challenge his Odysseus while the Ithaca palace intrigue keeps the audience equally engaged as Anne Hathaway’s Penelope fights off an array of brutish suitors. Nolan’s clash between the A-listers in the two stories is a spectacle that throws aside the usual cerebral plots of the director and engages audiences with good old-fashioned bloodlust. The film industry can no longer make films like these.
1. The Dark Knight (2008 )
The script (written by the Nolan brothers, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer) is fantastic, with so many iconic lines (“You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain”… “It’s all part of the plan…”). It’s a fantastic script, written by the Nolan Brothers, based on a story from Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. There are so many memorable lines (You die as a hero, or live to become the villain, but you can never be both”) The supporting cast members are all outstanding, Zimmer’s score is intense and effective, and there’s a lot of action. The Dark Knight, Nolan’s debut film that reached $1 billion in box office revenue was a massive success upon its release. Its earnings were more than twice as high as Batman Begins. Nolan has a lot of movies with long runtimes, but The Dark Knight is one you don’t want to finish. (THR’s review.)

Queen Camilla’s role in Prince Harry, King Charles’ reunion revealed
The long-awaited meeting between Prince Harry and King Charles was made possible by Queen Camilla.
Catherine Mayer, royal author and People’s newest cover story published on Wednesday, said: “She’s a nonnegotiable element of Charles’ life.”
There is no reconciliation between him and her.
Harry, Meghan, their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet and Charles, both 78 years old, met at Highgrove House, on the 10th of July, with Camilla and Charles.
Charles has not seen his grandchildren in the last four years. He is currently fighting cancer. The details of this meeting are not public.
People quoted a royal source as saying that it was better for the public to not know about these meetings. They should be allowed to renew those family bonds.
Harry and Camilla have a complex relationship. Camilla is alleged to be the woman who had an affair during Charles’ marriage with Harry’s mom, Princess Diana.
The Duke of Sussex referred to Camilla in a “60 Minutes interview” from 2023, which was conducted for the promotion of his book “Spare”, as “the villain” in the relationship between his parents.
Harry stated that his stepmother needed to “rehabilitate” her image. She married Charles nine years after Diana and the monarch divorced.
Harry claimed that Camilla leaked stories to the media for her personal benefit.
He claimed that both sides were willing to exchange information. There were going to be bodies or people left on the streets because she was part of a hierarchy-based family and on her way to becoming Queen consort.
Harry revealed in his autobiography that he, along with brother Prince William, urged their dad not to marry Queen consort.
Harry said, “We did not think it necessary.” We thought it would do more harm than benefit and that, if he is now on his own person, then that should be enough. Why would you go to such lengths when it is not necessary?
Harry said that his siblings, who were now estranged from each other, agreed to the marriage because they wanted “their dad [to] be happy” and see how happy she was with him.
Page Six confirms that Harry’s family, including his wife and children, joined him to the UK for a meeting with his stepmother and father.
The trip turned into “a nightmare” after Buckingham Palace retracted the offer of letting the couple stay in the royal residence.
Markle (44), who was on a trip with Harry and his wife Camilla, spent the majority of their time without them.
William did not see his brother Charles, but royal expert Kinsey Schoffield told us exclusively that the future king, “understands”, why Charles and Harry reunited.
Schofield said that William also believes Harry has “not earned the right to return into family confidence.”
