The film is set to be released in theaters on June 20th, and has already become one of the most anticipated films of 2026. Spielberg gave an early preview at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. It has been a hot topic.
The director, who is no stranger to this genre, made it clear that this project will take a different approach. He said the film was “more truth than fantasy,” suggesting that it might be based on real-world ideas or at least widely discussed theories of extraterrestrials life.

In his CinemaCon address, Spielberg revealed what brought him back to extraterrestrial stories for the first time since more than 20 years.
The filmmaker cited a New York Times article from 2017 detailing U.S. pilots’ encounters of unidentified flying object, noting similar sightings had only become more frequent since “War of the Worlds,” his last sci-fi film.
Spielberg did not reveal any plot details but made it clear that the film doesn’t aim to provide tidy answers. “I truly, sincerely believe this movie will answer questions,” he said to attendees before adding, “And I also believe this movie will cause you to ask many questions.”
“All you need from the beginning is a seatbelt,” he added.

Spielberg, a veteran filmmaker and a fan of cinema, had more in mind than just promoting his new project at CinemaCon. He also spoke about the importance of preserving the theater experience, which was once the way audiences interacted with films.
The director argued movies should stay in theaters longer before moving to home platforms. He praised efforts to extend exclusive window. He cited the efforts of Universal Pictures management, namely Donna Langley, in pushing theatrical runs to 45 days.
Spielberg told Variety that audiences will find what they are looking for, no matter how big or small the film. But studios must help us by expanding the exclusive window like Donna did.

Spielberg used his time at CinemaCon as an opportunity to encourage studios to invest more in original stories, warning that a reliance on familiar franchises may wear out audiences.
“If we only make IP that is well-known, we will run out of fuel,” he said. “There is no more important than telling visual stories to the audience, and these can take any form. But we need more original stories.”
The event was also a personal milestone, as the director was awarded the MPA America250 Award.
