Driver dies in seven-car crash during Nurburgring race featuring Verstappen

Image source: Getty Images18 Apr 2026Racing Driver Juha Miettinen died on Saturday after a seven car crash during the Nurburgring Langstrecken Series (NLS) qualifying in Germany. The race was initially halted with a red-flag before it was suspended an hour later when the severity of the multi-car accident became apparent. The race, which was given extra attention because Formula 1 driver Max Vertappen was there, will not be resumed on Saturday evening, according to the organizers. Race control halted the race immediately after the collision between multiple vehicles to allow for extensive recovery operations and rescue operations, the race organiser stated in a press release. “Despite the immediate arrival by emergency services, emergency medics were not able to save the driver after he was extracted from the car. The driver died in the medical center after all attempts to resuscitate him failed. “The statement also added that six drivers were taken to hospital to be examined, but none of the injuries were life-threatening. Verstappen sent his condolences via social media. The four-time Formula 1 champion is scheduled to compete in the 24-hour endurance event in May. Verstappen posted on social media that he was “shocked” by the events of today. “We all love motorsport, but times like these remind us how dangerous it can be. “I send my deepest condolences and love to Juha’s loved ones. “A minute of silence will be observed in memory of Miettinen at the grid formation on Sunday’s race. Why Man City ‘leg-beaters’ can make difference against Arsenal – Pulis

4 It He Pe Pe All City Image City The Art If If City win, then momentum swings full circle and they would become outright favourites to collect another title under Pep.I’d say a draw suits Arsenal more, but does not automatically finish the title race off.So, how do both teams prepare for such a big game?City have the home advantage and also have had a week’s rest because they were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 by Real Madrid.Arsenal face an away fixture and a shorter space of time for their players to recover after playing Sporting on Wednesday, but getting through that tie was really important for them, and will give them a boost in confidence that they can take into the City game. Both managers know each other inside out, and both sets of players will be fully aware of the challenge they face – so, on paper, you would think there are going to be few surprises for either team. This is why Pep and Mikel are paid the big bucks, however, as managers of our very best clubs. They will both be really busy this week on certain tactical issues – basically what they want their team to do, and how they will stop the opposition.Manchester City v ArsenalSunday, 19 April at 16:30 BSTListen on SoundsListen to live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds; follow live text commentary on the BBC Sport app and website. Carrick silences doubters as Man Utd close on Champions League

BySimon stoneManchester United reporter in Stamford Bridge19.04.2026, 00.18 BST719 comments”You can lose football games. It’s all about bouncing right back. The world does not end because we lose. The world doesn’t end because we lose. Inaction was viewed as conservative. Carrick has been questioned all week about his suitability. This latest victory was not aesthetically pleasing. But, since only Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had won at Stamford Bridge after Sir Alex Ferguson, style was secondary. Chelsea may have hit the woodwork 3 times. They may have been the more consistent threat. Carrick’s was the team that delivered. He said, “It was just a game to get a result.” “And we found it.” “There was more though. Carrick had to overcome the adversity that he was going to be without three of his central defenders (Matthijs De Ligt due to injury, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, and Lisandro Yoro due to suspension) and then lose a fourth to a training-ground injury. This happened so late in the week, that his chosen pairing of Noussair Makraoui, and Ayden heaven, could only prepare by walking through. “I love it when you see players flourish in those moments,” said Carrick. Heaven, 19, had never started a match under Carrick. He was first given his chance by Ruben Fletcher, and then his immediate successor Darren Fletcher. “Ayden is a young player who hasn’t played much football in the last few years, and coming into that environment can be a challenge,” said Carrick. “We tell young players the same thing all the time. They sometimes look at you like they’re saying, “yeah, great one”, but he wouldn’t have expected it to come at that time. He would have been more focused on training every day, taking care of himself, and being prepared. “But he wasn’t there, he prepared himself, and he handled it magnificently. “If Heaven felt pressure, he did not show it. The same is true of Carrick. Although admittedly, it helps having someone like Bruno Fernandes as part of his team. Fernandes has 18 Premier League assist to his name in this season, only two short of the record. “I can’t claim any credit for that,” Carrick laughed. “I don’t even remember what I said, but I certainly can’t claim credit for the goal. “Carrick’s team will move on. Eight points from five matches is the minimum requirement for a return into the Champions League after two seasons absence. It will probably be less, given that Liverpool still has to play Everton, Chelsea, and their own trip to Old Trafford, on 3 May. “We were fine, know?” He said Monday. “We talked about a few issues and learned from them, but football is what it is. “The league is just what it is. Results are everywhere. We didn’t get too down about it. “If anything, when we looked at the results, we thought, ‘we are right near the top if not the top of the 12 games.’ This gave us a lot more confidence. “We knew exactly what this game was. We didn’t overplay it. We didn’t speak. It wasn’t even about points or positions. It was about coming down to this place to win a match and committing to that. The boys did it. “Related TopicsManchester UnitedPremier LeagueFootballCunha’s win for Man Utd at Chelsea boosts Champions League hopesMore about this storyLatest Manchester United News, Analysis and Fan ViewsAsk about Man Utd: What do you want to learn?
