Bargain buffet refuses to die while luxury dining takes over Vegas
There are few exceptions to the days when bargain buffets were used as a way of attracting Las Vegas gambling fans.
The Wall Street Journal quoted Michael Gaughan as saying that the South Point casino and hotel’s buffets are what bring people into their establishment. They get value for money and stay to play.
According to the magazine, The South Point makes between $1.5 and $2 million per month but attracts about 3,000 guests a day.

Members can get the casino breakfast for $16.95, which includes two Bloody Marys. Prime rib brunch with champagne, two mimosas included, is available for as little as $32.95 Prime rib and shrimp dinner buffet is $37.95 or only $32.95 if you are a member.
The Journal reports that people start to line up before noon for the Friday Seafood Night. It begins at 3 pm. The prime rib is $57.95 and comes with two glasses of red sangria, draft beer or wine. Lunch buffets are $22.95 per person for club members, and $26.95 per person for nonmembers.
The budget hotel Circus Circus offers an affordable buffet. The hotel bills itself as offering “classic Las Vegas cuisine, something for everyone.” Buffets are available from $19.95 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Excalibur Hotel’s weekday brunch is $32.99 per adult and $18.99 per child. The price for brunch goes up slightly on Fridays. On Saturdays and on Sundays the mimosa brunch is offered for $43.99.

The Journal reported that Circus Circus managed to make a profit between $50,000 and $80,000 per month during the summer months by using prime ribs from their hotel steakhouse to create a stew for a buffet.
The publication claims that the famed buffets in Las Vegas have been impacted by the COVID-19 epidemic, social distancing and the increasing trend for wealthier tourists to seek out higher-end restaurants.
The Journal stated that there were over a dozen Vegas-style buffets along the Strip by 2020. Only four are left.
Budget casinos, unlike many Strip resorts rely on locals and gamblers who are value conscious. Cheap buffets can be an effective tool to increase casino traffic.

Las Vegas is booming with luxury buffets. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Wynn Buffet (with prices starting at $80 for dinner and upwards) and Caesars’ Bacchanal ($87 or more) have often long lines.
Whytney RAWLS, a luxury travel expert at Fox News Digital, said that the economics of New York City have changed fundamentally.
Rawls stated that “Gaming used to be the main revenue generator.” Today, the revenue share is dominated by premium rates for rooms, fine dining, nightlife entertainment, retail, and large scale events.
Fox News Digital reported that while the city used to be a popular destination for tourists, the cost of entry is becoming more difficult to justify.
According to The Las Vegas Review-Journal, the city has a greater focus on luxury hotels, celebrity chefs restaurants, stadium weekends, and expensive events.
Las Vegas’s visitation in 2025 will be down to 38,5 million visitors, a 7.5% drop from 2024. This is according to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Visitors generated $55.1 billion dollars in direct expenditures, a record amount.

After years of court battles, the ruling came after Chey had an affair with a woman and fathered a child by her. He also built SK’s business empire.
Roh’s wife, who claimed to be entitled to half his fortune, had requested that the court award her nearly $1 billion.

This case goes back to 2015. Chey stunned South Korea with a 3-page newspaper article about his marriage.

Roh argued the court should use the current market value of SK Group to calculate Chey’s wealth.
She claimed she had a right to the half of her husband’s assets.
The appeals court awarded her approximately $645,000,000 in cash on July 24.
Chey was valued at a lower amount before the shares of SK Hynix soared in recent artificial intelligence boom.
Chey’s attorneys said that they were reviewing the decision and had not excluded a second appeal at South Korea’s Supreme Court.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Kim Hee Young (also known as Chloe Kim) has been Chey’s partner for a long time.
Roh sued Kim separately after their relationship was made public.

Chey Kim and Chey were ordered to jointly pay Roh damages of about $1,5 million.
The court found that both the affair and child born out of wedlock contributed to the breakup of the relationship between the two and also caused Roh emotional damage.

Waymo crashes 1/3 as much as a human driver, says IIHS – with some caveats
According to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s report, Waymo’s electric autonomous taxis have 68% fewer crashes than average drivers. They also experience a lower average severity of crash. There are important limitations to the data.
Recently, there has been a boom in companies that offer autonomous taxis with “level 4 automation” – meaning they can operate without a driver, or at least within a geofenced area.
Waymo, an Alphabet, Inc. subsidiary, has led the pack amongst these services.
The company now provides autonomous ride-hailing in 11 US cities. This covers an area bigger than one US state.

The robots have made tens and millions of journeys, giving us the opportunity to analyze data.
They’re actually pretty good. There are some cautions.
IIHS found that Waymo is 68% more safe than the average human
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), famous for their “Top Safety Picks” recommendations on crash safety, looked at federal crash reports for robotaxi services between 2021 and 2024. The data was mainly focused on Waymo because, while other services are included, Cruise ceased operations in 2023, and Zoox began public rides only in 2025.
Tesla is also not included in the data for 2021-2024, since it began to offer its Austin “robotaxi”, with drivers inside the vehicle, in 2025. It has only driven 380,000 miles unsupervised as of last week.
The IIHS reported that after removing redundancies from the data and determining the severity of the crashes, Waymo was responsible for 68% less crashes that were severe enough to be reported by the average driver. This is based on a sample 50 million miles of autonomously driven Waymos over the course of the study.
Humans crash 4,06 times per million miles driven, while Waymos crashes 1,28 times.
Waymos tend to record less serious crashes than humans, with the majority of crashes not being the fault or Waymo.
Waymo, which uses radar and LiDAR to detect objects, does not rely on light. However, it has a greater share of accidents in low-light conditions.
Three of the four areas studied – Phoenix San Francisco and Los Angeles – showed similar results. Waymo had slightly more crashes in Austin than human drivers, but this could be due to a very small number of miles that were driven in the study. The company wasn’t yet available in Austin in 2024 and was only testing.
Waymo released similar crash data in other studies. In a study from 2023, Waymo cars were found to reduce injuries caused by crashes and crashes reported by police by 85%. A study in 2025 showed that Waymos made pedestrians and bicyclists 25x safer. The studies have been published by Waymo, and peer reviewed, but since the researchers are Waymo staff, having more independent verification is helpful. Tesla, on the other hand, releases its internal figures, but does not submit them for independent review – after all, it requires more miles to do so.
This study has its limitations
In the discussion section of the report, several key points are raised. The discussion section of the study focuses on several important points.
Companies are only required to record crashes but not miles driven. This makes it impossible to determine the frequency of accidents – except if they report them voluntarily, like Waymo.
While humans don’t have to notify the police about fender benders, autonomous companies do. IIHS has had to eliminate minor scrapes and fender benders from their data, which will introduce subjectivity.
The concept of “average driver” is another important consideration. Should we compare a robot that can theoretically operate at maximum capacity 24/7 with human drivers, who are frequently tired, rushed or stressed out, and may be impaired by alcohol, fatigue, stress, etc.? Comparing a Waymo with a drunk driver is not that impressive if drunk driving is a major factor in the average human. Robotaxis should be measured against the best-expected driving of humans, not just humans themselves.
How does this difference between human-driven versus robotically driven miles affect the expected crash rate?
Waymo does not drive on highways so those miles have been excluded for human drivers and robots. The highways have a lower accident rate than city streets and are therefore a more straightforward domain. Excluding them from human data makes drivers appear worse, but Waymo doesn’t operate in this simpler domain, so that’s fair.
Waymo tends to drive on streets with lower speeds than humans, and even ignores highways. Waymo crashes occurred on roads with speeds under 25mph whereas human accidents only happened 8% here. Waymo’s lower severity of crashes could be explained by the fact that it is getting into smaller-scale accidents. It’s good to have lower speeds, but it could make Waymo crash rates look worse than they are.
The severity of a crash is also affected by whether anyone was injured. This will be less with autonomous taxis since almost half of Waymo’s miles have been driven without humans. A human cannot be injured if there is no one in the vehicle (although there are people in other vehicles or on the street).
It could be a good thing, as fewer people are involved in accidents. But it could also mean that there are more vehicles driving around, transporting nothing and nobody, which can lead to higher traffic congestion. This then leads to more crashes at the population level.
The sample size remains low, even though Waymo has a much higher total of miles unsupervised than its competitors (50,000,000 from 2021-2024 vs. Tesla’s 380,000 miles unsupervised in all of time, as of last week and no miles during the study period). Many crash types have a grand total of zero or one crashes, which will give strangely spikey data. The average of a larger dataset is more reliable and will be less affected by single incidents.
Comparatively, human drivers in the US drive more than 3 trillion miles a year, while in the areas of study, they drove around 222 billion in that same time period. This is enough to provide representative data.
There’s still some way to go until we are able to answer the question about autonomous vehicle safety. But based on the information we have seen, we know that the warning signs we see today do not appear as serious as popular belief might lead us believe.

SpaceX eyes tower catch for next Starship after auspicious end to 13th flight
SpaceX had a lucky day on Friday. It sent its thirteenth Starship full-scale test flight from South Texas, halfway around the globe, to a splashdown intact and exactly as planned in an isolated section of the Indian Ocean.
Starship’s splashdowns have been precise in the past. The ship rolled gently and floated in an isolated stretch of ocean to the west of Australia. SpaceX officials are used to conflagrations after previous splashdowns.
After reaching the Indian Ocean, it appeared that Starship was in good shape. Engineers from SpaceX flew drones above the vehicle in order to examine its heat shield. They got their best view yet of how the more than 18000 ceramic tiles that insulated the stainless steel ship’s airframe endured the journey to and from space. As Starship sped back to Earth after its one-hour flight, the tiles were able to withstand temperatures of up 1,430deg Celsius (2,600deg F).
Elon Musk, SpaceX’s CEO and founder, said that the perfect end of Friday’s launch encouraged SpaceX to make the next step with Starship. This would require launching Starship into a higher-altitude orbit (possibly low Earth), to return the vehicle to its launch site. The launch tower’s mechanical arms will try to catch the vessel as it hovers. SpaceX already did this when it launched the massive Super Heavy booster of its rocket, which was heavier and larger than Starship, yet returned at only a fraction the speed.
Musk posted on Friday night that SpaceX would try to capture the ship and tower in the next flight if we don’t find any problems.
Data hungry
The performance and durability the Starship heat shield is one of the biggest challenges. SpaceX has ambitious plans for Starship, including rapid turnarounds and multiple flights per day. The heat shield must be able to withstand the extreme temperature and vibrations it experiences during the launch and landing. The heat shield can’t just be repaired or replaced every time.
Dan Huot is a SpaceX communication manager who commented on SpaceX’s webcast. This is the perfect scenario for a team trying to collect heat shield data.
SpaceX could also tow the rocket to the shore for a more thorough inspection, if the splashdown was intact. Starship can be reused, but only after it has been exposed to saltwater.
This is crucial for the refinement of both the heat shield as well as everything else. Huot stated that the good news was “you’re seeing a heat shield which looks pretty intact.” We were at significantly higher dynamic forces, which put a lot more strain on this vehicle as we climbed uphill. And it is still sitting in the water.
SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network continued to receive signals from Starship even after the splashdown. The six Raptor engine of Starship were not damaged by the water splashing against its lens.
The test launch on Friday was SpaceX’s 13th Starship flight, atop its Super Heavy booster. It also marked the second of two flights of Starship Version 3, the most powerful rocket in the world.
At 5:51 PM CDT, the 408-foot tall (124-meter), rocket took off at Starbase in Texas. This is a few kilometers north of US-Mexico Border. The Super Heavy booster was powered by 33 Raptor methane engines. They guided the rocket to the east, over the Gulf of Mexico.
SpaceX had a checklist of Flight 13 but the only item left unchecked was a controlled splashdown for the Super Heavy booster. The booster was to be re-lit for a burn to simulate a landing off the Texas coast, allowing it to perform the maneuvers necessary to bring the booster to its launch pad to recover and reuse.
The Raptor engine failed to start for the landing burn and so the booster crashed into the sea at high speeds. SpaceX had similar problems with splashdown during the May flight. The Friday flight was a step forward, but there is still work to be done on recovering the Super Heavy booster. SpaceX recovered Super Heavy boosters twice with Starship Version 2 but never with Version 3.
SpaceX’s officials posted an update to the website saying that the booster had completed its high-thrust portion of the boostback with all 33 engines for the first time using a Super Heavy engine V3. The burn was then ended early. It attempted to relight the engines before the landing burn. A subset of them ignited successfully, but the booster experienced a splashdown into the Gulf.
Space Success
Starship continued to accelerate into space while the Super Heavy booster descended towards the Gulf. It fired its six engines for more than five minute before starting a coast of a quarter-hour over the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
Starship’s payload bay opened a few minutes after the engine shut down and began deploying 20 Starlink satellites. These satellites, the first upgraded Starlink V3 models from SpaceX with improved throughput and performance, are the most advanced yet. The satellites are larger and heavier, so they won’t fit into SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which is smaller.
Starship released Starlink V3s with its Pez-like deploymenter. They were thrown overboard via a slit like opening in the side of spacecraft. These flat-panel satellites didn’t stay up in the air for very long. The flat-panel satellites did not stay in space for long.
SpaceX’s ground teams were able to establish contact quickly with the satellites via radio and laser links and then “downloaded important telemetry” prior to their destruction. The engineers were able to see the first performance data of Starlink V3s.
After the deployment of satellites was complete, engineers decided to restart one of Raptor’s engines. This is something they had not done on their last flight. The burning lasted for approximately 14 seconds and could be seen by observers in South Africa. SpaceX called the Starship demonstration “core technology for future orbital mission”. Gravity pulled Starship down to Earth.
Starship’s next step is to get into orbit, and then return the vessel to its launch pad. These achievements will allow SpaceX to launch operational Starlink V3 Satellites and unlock higher-speed direct connectivity to devices for the US Military and consumers.
NASA is on the path to orbital refueling with SpaceX’s orbital flight. The demonstration will be crucial for all Starship flights beyond low Earth orbit including NASA’s Artemis Moon missions. NASA has partnered with SpaceX, Blue Origin and Blue Origin in order to create human-rated versions Starship as well as the Blue Moon Lander to transport astronauts from and to the moon surface.

Did OpenAI’s models just breach its own risk ‘red line’? Outside safety experts think so
OpenAI revealed earlier this week that two models, the newly released GPT 5.6 Sol, as well as a capable system yet to be released, had escaped from a closed-down test environment. They then exploited an unknown vulnerability known only to the company, allowing them to access the internet. Then, they broke into another AI firm, Hugging Face, to steal answers for a test on cybersecurity.
This incident is alarming the entire world. But perhaps nobody more than AI experts, who have warned about this kind of danger for years. They also urge companies and government to take more precautions.
According to several AI safety experts, Fortune’s recent hack seems to indicate that OpenAI models are now at a risk level OpenAI defines in its published safety policy as “critical”, the highest possible level of danger. In these policies, OpenAI had promised to halt model development as soon as it could find better control systems.
OpenAI’s “Preparedness Framework” defines the threshold as “critical”. It is a document that defines risk policies. The policy states that the designation “critical” is meant to be applied to models that are able to independently discover and create working exploits to previously unknown vulnerabilities in many real-world, well-defended systems. Or, a model can develop and execute an entire new attack strategy on a target that is well-defended after only being provided with a generic goal and no human assistance.
OpenAI’s policy states that after an AI model has reached this level, it will “stop further development”, until we “have specified safeguards and control standards that meet the Critical standard.”
OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework represents a voluntary, not a mandatory commitment. The company posts the document to its website to let other AI safety experts and the general public know what controls they plan to implement. Under the EU AI Act (which came into effect in August 2025), the adoption of policies like the Preparedness Framework will be mandatory for all frontier AI laboratories.
Nathan Calvin, General Counsel at Encode AI (an AI safety advocacy organization), told Fortune that “OpenAI’s preparedness frame defines critical cybersecurity abilities and prescribes safeguards which need to be put in place before development can proceed.” According to my understanding of OpenAI’s preparedness frame, this model that was deployed internally met all the criteria needed for cybersecurity. OpenAI disputes that designation as critical? Does OpenAI plan to implement safeguards which meet the Critical Standard before moving forward?”
Tyler Johnson, the founder of AI watchdog organization the Midas Project said that it appeared the models have reached this most dangerous threshold. He said that a simple reading would indicate yes. It operated independently for a whole weekend. It tried different attack vectors against Hugging Face, and then chained multiple zero-day vulnerabilities.
OpenAI didn’t respond directly to Fortune regarding whether or not the AI models that were involved in this incident met its “critical” risk standard. A spokesperson instead said that this was an “unprecedented incident” and it marked an important moment in AI safety. With the help of external advisors and our Safety and Security Committee, we are conducting an extensive review. We will then publish for all to see a report on our findings once the review has been completed.
Johnson says that the vagueness in the language of this framework could lead to disagreements. It’s not clear if the Hugging Face exploits would satisfy the threshold requirement. He added that it’s possible to demonstrate a severer class of vulnerability such as one which allows an attacker to have deep system-level access to a computer operating system.
“OpenAI’s model outsmarted its creators, exploited a never-before-discovered vulnerability in OpenAI’s code, escaped onto the open internet, and attacked another company,” said Peter Wildeford, head of policy at the AI Policy Network. OpenAI must explain what is going on in detail and the threshold for Critical if this does not cross that line.
AI experts claim that OpenAI lacks other safety measures
OpenAI previously stated that it regarded its latest model, GPT-5.6, as a “High” cybersecurity risk. The Preparedness Framework defines High as the lowest of two levels of risk. The release of models that fall below the threshold “High” can occur without significant risk mitigation.
According to OpenAI policy, a High designation should trigger several safeguards: tighter controls on security, measures to protect against outside misuse of the model once it is made public, as well as protections from the model behaving in an unpredictable or misleading manner when heavily used for internal research.
Some experts, however, question if one of them, safeguards against misalignment, for large-scale deployments within the company, has been implemented properly. The protections aim to stop models that are deceptive, hide their true capabilities or work against the developers’ intentions.
It’s not the first time that OpenAI has had its compliance with this particular safety safeguard questioned.
Fortune published in February a report that claimed safety experts had claimed OpenAI failed to implement misalignment protections required after its GPT 5.3-Codex became the first model to be rated “high” for cybersecurity risks under the Preparedness Framework.
OpenAI denied that the framework it had developed was necessary in this case. It argued that the additional protections are only activated when a high level of cyber-risk occurs in “conjunction with” the ability to work independently for extended periods. This, according to OpenAI, is not something GPT-5.3 Codex has demonstrated.
According to reports, the models in this current case involving Hugging Face operated independently over a period of days. This would appear to be in line with that standard.
In February, OpenAI was warned by us that it may not have adhered to the required safety measures in accordance with its policy. The model was not autonomous in the long term, they claimed. Johnson asked: “But the model which hacked Hugging Face has long-range autonomous, where are the protections now?”

Maine mom’s bladder mistakenly removed during surgery, wins $17M
The Maine mother who went to the hospital expecting a routine procedure ended up with a nightmare. A surgeon had allegedly removed a cyst from her ovary instead of her bladder.
According to Bangor Daily News, Emily Mitchell (43), of Skowhegan was awarded $15.7 million by a jury after it found Northern Light Inland Hospital liable for the botched surgery that rendered her permanently disabled.
Mitchell had laparoscopic surgery on her left ovary in March 2023, expecting to be treated for a cyst. Court records show that Dr. Danielle Gagnon, the surgeon who performed her surgery, mistakenly took out nearly all of Mitchell’s healthy bladder.
Mitchell was not aware of the shocking mistake until he returned to hospital, in severe pain and suffering from severe swelling. He also had difficulty urinating.
Her bladder had been removed by the time she was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. Surgeons were preparing to fix what they thought was an injury to her bladder, but made this horrifying discovery as they prepared to do so.
According to WMTW8, local television station, Mitchell was unable to function without tubes for more than 8 months. She suffered from kidney infection, recurrent infections of the urinary system, and multiple other medical procedures.
News Center Maine reported that after doctors determined there was not enough original tissue to restore Mitchell’s bladder, they used a small section of her intestine.
Mitchell has been battling urinary tract infection for more than three years. He will need to be treated throughout his life because of this mistake.
After a 10-day long trial, a unanimous jury of nine people sided with Mitchell, awarding damages to her for suffering and pain, injuries permanent and future medical costs.
Joshua Mitchell’s wife was awarded $1.25m for loss of companionship. The family received a total payment of $17m, the highest medical malpractice verdict ever in Kennebec County.
Susan Faunce, Mitchell’s lawyer told Bangor’s newspaper that “this is the closure Emily and her families have been waiting for.” They can now move on, confident that their story has been heard, seen and accepted.
The hospital officials expressed their respect for the decision and sympathy to Mitchell and her parents, and added that patient safety is still their number one priority.
Northern Light Health no longer employes Dr. Gagnon.
Last year, the hospital that performed the operation closed due to financial problems.
