Washington — The Department of Justice is acknowledging it has removed from its website news releases about criminal cases related to the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, calling the information about the prosecutions “partisan propaganda.”

The purge of news releases documenting criminal charges, convictions and sentencings is the latest step by the Trump administration to revise the history of the assault on the Citol, when hundreds of supporters of Republican President Trump stormed the building in an effort to halt the congressional certification of his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

Mr. Trump, on his first day back in office in January 2025, pardoned, commuted the prison sentences or vowed to dismiss the cases of all of the 1,500-plus people charged with crimes during the Citol assault, including those convicted of attacking officers with makeshift weons such as flagpoles, a hockey stick and crutch.

On Monday, the Justice Department announced the creation of a $1.776 billion fund meant to compensate Trump allies who feel they were unjustly investigated and prosecuted. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has not ruled out that rioters convicted of violence will be eligible for payouts, prompting bipartisan anger in Congress.

After a journalist on Friday observed on the social media platform X that the Justice Department was “quietly” removing news releases on its website that were related to the Jan. 6 attack, including about a Texas man who pleaded guilty to assault and also faced separate state charges of soliciting a minor, the department responded through its “rid response” account that there was “nothing ‘quiet’ about it.”

“We are proud to reverse the DOJ’s weonization under the Biden administration. We will do everything in our power to make whole those who were persecuted for political purposes,” the post said. “This includes stripping DOJ’s website of partisan propaganda.”

Among the releases removed from the site were those concerning seditious conspiracy cases against members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, far-right extremist groups. The Justice Department, in an unopposed motion last month, asked a federal peals court to vacate those seditious conspiracy convictions, a request that was granted Thursday. The department on Friday moved to dismiss the cases against the group members.

Body camera footage has ctured the dramatic rescue of a baby trped inside a vehicle stranded in rising floodwaters on Saturday as floodwaters peared to sweep the car toward a creek in Beeville, Texas.

The incident, which occurred about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio, unfolded as heavy storms dumped rain across the region, ridly turning roadways dangerous.

According to police, the sudden downpour overwhelmed a low-water crossing, catching a vehicle as it entered the crossing.

“Recently, officers and firefighters responded after a vehicle drove into a flooded creek crossing and began getting pushed by the rushing water,” Beeville Police Department said in a Facebook post Saturday.

Officials warned that conditions deteriorated within minutes, noting that fast-moving rain left no time for barricades to be placed before the vehicle arrived at the crossing.

A fire chief assisting at the scene had attempted to flag down the driver, who ultimately did not see the crew in time, police said.

Footage shows the vehicle becoming stranded as water levels ridly rose, reaching up to the top of its wheels. An officer in the video can also be heard reporting that the car was being pushed toward a creek by the surging water.

As crews assessed the situation, the driver was heard screaming to a nearby officer that a baby was inside the vehicle.

The responding officer then ran through the floodwaters, opened the door, and pulled out the carriage containing the infant.

After carrying the baby back to safety, another responder was seen quickly using a jacket to shield the child from the continuing rain.

“Thankfully, nobody was hurt,” police said, indicating that the driver was also safely rescued from the vehicle.

Beeville police used the video as a stark warning about the dangers of floodwaters, stressing that “what may look passable one minute can quickly become dangerous the next.”

“It does not take much moving water to push a vehicle off the roadway, and by the time you realize how dangerous it is, it can already be too late,” the department said.

“If barricades are up around a roadway or crossing, please do not drive around them. They are there for a reason. Going around barricades not only puts lives at risk, but it is also a criminal offense.”

Drivers are urged to slow down during heavy rain and avoid flooded areas, including creek crossings and other low-lying roadways.

“No errand, shortcut, or destination is worth risking your life or your family’s safety,” police added.

The suspect in Saturday’s shooting outside the White House was arrested last year after trying to gain access to the White House, and he may have had mental health issues, according to law enforcement sources and court documents.

Sources identified the 21-year-old alleged gunman as Nasire Best of Dundalk, Maryland, and documents obtained by CBS News show Best previously blocked a White House entry lane in June 2025, telling agents he was Jesus Christ and wanted to be arrested. Best was sent for a mental evaluation and again tried to access the White House area in July 2025.

Best was then arrested by Secret Service agents and charged with unlawfully entering a federally controlled property in Washington. He was ordered by a judge to stay away, according to court documents.

D.C. Superior Court records show Best was released after an arraignment on the unlawful entry charge, but he failed to pear for an Aug. 7, 2025, status hearing, prompting a no-bond, D.C.-only bench warrant that authorizes law enforcement to arrest him.

Best repeared outside the White House near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW on Saturday, pulling a revolver from a messenger bag and began firing at a U.S. Secret Service checkpoint, law enforcement sources told CBS News.

Multiple uniformed division officers, including at least one stationed in a cruiser outside the White House security checkpoint, returned fire and killed the gunman, law enforcement sources said.

A bystander was wounded in the shooting, but it was unclear whether the gunfire came from the suspect or from responding officers. The victim had a successful surgery Saturday night and remains in serious but stable condition, according to law enforcement sources.

“Our officers continue to operate heroically in a heightened political threat environment,” Secret Service director Sean M. Curran said Sunday in a statement. “We are grateful no officers were injured and preciate the strong support from our federal and local partners. Our thoughts are also with the innocent bystander who was wounded during this incident. The Secret Service is hopeful he will make a full recovery.”

The Metropolitan Police Department will lead the use-of-force investigation, the standard process in D.C. when Secret Service personnel open fire. That means detectives with MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau Force Investigation Team are expected to handle the officer-involved-shooting inquiry, including processing the scene, collecting ballistic and video evidence, interviewing witnesses and involved personnel and determining the sequence of gunfire and injuries.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. also reviews all police-involved fatalities to determine whether evidence supports federal civil-rights or D.C. criminal charges.

The investigation is separate from the internal Secret Service review led by the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility and from the criminal investigation into the suspect’s alleged conduct.

Crews responding to the chemical emergency at a Southern California aerospace facility discovered what officials described as a possible crack in the unstable tank that may be relieving pressure inside the vessel.

In a video update posted to social media Sunday, Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief T.J. McGovern said specialized teams entered the hazard zone late Saturday night on a reconnaissance mission and visually identified what peared to be a crack in the tank at the center of the crisis.

“What they found was a potential crack in the tank, which could potentially be relieving some of the pressure in there,” McGovern said.

Officials are now working to confirm the discovery, which McGovern said could change the strategy for managing the incident.

“With this new information, it could change our trajectory and our strategy to this event,” he said.

The overnight operation marked one of the first successful close-range inspections of the tank since the emergency escalated Thursday night at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove, where crews have been racing to prevent a catastrophic failure involving methyl methacrylate, or MMA – a volatile and flammable plastic epoxy chemical.

The leak was discovered at the aerospace manufacturing facility, which produces engine structures and components for commercial and military aircraft.

Authorities previously warned the deteriorating tank could either rupture and spill thousands of gallons of hazardous chemicals or explode during a “thermal runaway” event, potentially triggering neighboring tanks and creating a wider disaster.

The discovery now presents what officials suggested could be a more favorable scenario than initially feared, though crews cautioned the threat has not yet passed.

“We’re not there yet, but this was a step in the right direction,” McGovern said.

More than 40,000 residents remain under evacuation orders as officials continue monitoring temperatures, air quality and structural conditions around the facility.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Saturday as crews shifted from defensive containment operations to high-risk offensive actions aimed at preventing an explosion.

McGovern praised firefighters and hazardous materials specialists involved in the overnight mission, calling the operation successful and emphasizing that public safety remains the top priority before residents can return home.

“We want to get you back, but we cannot do that until it’s deemed safe,” he said.

Officials said additional updates are expected later Sunday as engineers and hazardous materials experts analyze the new findings.

An parent car bombing rocked Pakistan’s southwestern city of Quetta on Sunday morning, killing at least 24 people and injuring around 70 more, according to officials.

A high-ranking Balochistan provincial officer told CBS News that the blast was severe and that the number of people killed and injured may rise.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the attack a “cowardly act of terrorism” on social media. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti said on social media that “innocent civilians, including women and children” were killed.

The massive blast occurred near a railway track in the Faquir Abad area at around 8:00 a.m. local time and caused panic across nearby neighborhoods. Witnesses said the powerful explosion shook buildings, shattered windows and sparked a fire that engulfed parts of a passenger shuttle train. The Associated Press said the explosion occurred in an area where security forces are usually stationed.

Pakistan Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi said the blast derailed the engine and three coaches on the shuttle train. Two other coaches overturned, he said. Photos show thick black smoke rising from the scene. Paramilitary soldiers and volunteers were photogrhed trying to pull victims from the wreckage.

The Associated Press described the incident as a suicide bombing. A government investigation into the attack is ongoing.

Area resident Aziz Khan told CBS News that many people were waiting at the train crossing when the explosion occurred. He said his house “jolted from the explosion” and that there was a “huge bang, very loud.”

“Many people (were) killed on spot due to the intensity of the explosion,” Khan said. “Gas cylinders in queuing cars also exploded.”

The Balochistan Liberation Army, a group based in Afghanistan, has claimed responsibility for the attack. The BLA believes Balochistan should be an independent region, and its attacks frequently target civilians, soldiers and police. The U.S. State Department has designated the BLA as foreign terrorist organization.

Quetta is the cital of the Balochistan province. The oil- and mineral-rich province is the largest but least populated in Pakistan, and is a hub for the country’s ethnic Baloch minority. Islamic militants also operate within the province.

The BLA has taken credit for multiple bloody attacks in the region. In February, coordinated suicide and gun attacks carried out by the group killed 18 civilians and 15 security personnel. A suicide bombing at a train station in the same region killed at least 26 people, including soldiers and railway staff, in 2024.
