Scale & Mass Appeal

A survivor of multiple mergers, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, looked unfazed during the year-long saga of HBO parent company Warner Bros. Discovery’s sale and its many twists and turns.
First, he had seen this movie before — Bloys was HBO President of Programming when the network’s parent company Time Warner was acquired by AT&T and Content Chief for both HBO and HBO Max when renamed parent WarnerMedia was acquired by Discovery in 2022.
“You have to understand I’ve been through two mergers, I don’t think there’s any announcement that would have shocked me,” Bloys said Thursday at Bloomberg’s Screentime when asked whether he was shocked by Netflix’s (ultimately unsuccessful) deal to buy WBD.
Secondly, he knew his worth. A 22-year HBO veteran and one of the most universally admired TV executives working today, Bloys has become synonymous with the brand, which is one of WBD’s most valuable assets.
He has a close-knit team of executives, most notably head of drama Francesca Orsi and head of comedy Amy Gravitt who both have been at HBO as long as he has and have been key to its success, developing a string of award-winning hits each. They are expected to make the move to Paramount with him, along with HBO Max’s Sarah Aubrey, who is in charge of Emmy-winning The Pitt and Hacks, the upcoming Harry Potter series and also oversees international. (This past summer, Orsi was approached for a top programming job at Amazon MGM Studios but stayed at HBO, in part because of WBD’s strict contract terms but also as a sign that Bloys and his core team would likely transition to Paramount.)
Bloys and his team will be ready to move in when the Paramount-WBD merger officially closes Oct. 6 now that his Paramount counterpart, Chair of Direct to Consumer Cindy Holland, exited earlier this week, leaving Bloys as the presumed head of the combined streaming operation. (Bloys would not comment Thursday what his position would be exactly but did hint that HBO Max and Paramount+ may be bundled vs. merged.)
In getting the yet unspecified job, Bloys had timing on his side too. While the Warner Bros. film studio has stumbled after a banner 2025, HBO/HBO Max continued to do well throughout the sales process as Paramount CEO was mulling potential post-merger executive appointments. It had strong showings at the 2025 and 2026 Emmys and all of the TV awards races in-between and added several promising new series, GoT prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, It: Welcome To Derry, Rooster, Task, I Love LA and The Chair Company, all of which have been renewed, and Emmy-winning limited series DTF St. Louis.
Then there was the chatter about Bloys possibly going to Netflix for a job or a deal. It may have been much lunch about nothing — Bloys’ meal with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos was much-talked in March — but it underscored the fact that Bloys had options.
Asked at Screentime yesterday whether there had been talks between Netflix and Bloys, Sarandos skirted the question, calling Bloys “a super talented guy” who “is going to be in a very good position wherever he goes.” Bloys also drew praise from Disney’s President and Chief Creative Officer Dana Walden; she called him “an incredibly savvy executive” who “has demonstrated over a long period of disruption at Warner Bros. the ability to not reinvent himself but evolve” at the same event.
Still, Bloys, whose contract goes through 2027, was Paramount CEO David Ellison‘s to lose. The contract is said to include a stipulation that he reports to the company’s CEO, and that proved a key condition for Ellison to keep him (and by extension, Bloys’ senior team).
With neither Bloys nor Holland likely to report to the other if and when their platforms were combined, there could be only one, as the saying goes, with Ellison “optimizing for HBO stability,” as Holland put it in the goodbye note to staff, pointing to the choice.
Bloys made a similar comment Thursday, saying that he believes Ellison will “maintain what we’ve done” at HBO. (He may get two CEOs for the price of one as Ellison appointed Mattel’s Ynon Kreitz as co-CEO, with all businesses supposed to be reporting jointly to both.)
Broadening Out The Slate
For a decade, Bloys has been the steward of HBO as home of premium storytelling.
“There are no plans to dilute the HBO brand in favor of increasing volume of programming,” he said in 2018 when the AT&T acquisition was pending, adding that he and his team have plans to do “nothing different than curate excellence.”
Two mergers later, things have changed. He will preside over a combined streaming slate that mixes HBO’s prestige fare with CBS next-day procedurals and sitcoms as well as Paramount+ mass appeal originals such as the rosters of shows from Taylor Sheridan/101 Studios (Landman, MobLand) and Tyler Perry (Sistas) as well as UFC.
For Bloys, that would be the next step in a conetnt aperture widening that actually started a decade ago.
“Back in the 2015 years, the idea that you would take HBO and add the Warner Bros. library was radical, it was ‘Oh my God, you’re going to have HBO next to Friends and Big Bang Theory and ER, how could you do that?’,” he said Thursday. “A lot of hand wringing, and I would say that was a very successful broadening out of the service.”
The process does not always work; adding Discovery content to HBO Max was largely rejected by the audience, Bloys admitted, so there is some caution how Paramount+ and HBO Max lineups would go together (or alongside each other if bundled.)
“I was talking to someone earlier this week who said that HBO and Paramount+ basically have the two most divergent customer bases, that they, in a lot of ways, don’t mesh naturally,” Bloys said. “I’ve had people say to me, ‘Oh okay, so the Taylor Sheridan stuff and HBO’. It’s a version of what people said to us about HBO and the Warner Bros. library. People who watch HBO tend to like television, tend to be consumers of television, and that doesn’t just mean HBO.”
Bloys also brought up South Park, which now streams on Paramount+ but had a long and successful run on HBO Max, proving itself compatible on both.
“We had South Park on our platform, one of the big properties at Paramount+. It did so well, we sued them when they [sent specials to P+],” he said Thursday.
Bloys has already taken steps in that direction with HBO Max fare, which may provide a blueprint for how he plans to broaden out the HBO brand for the combined streamer. That includes the network-style dramas such as the The Pitt and the upcoming How To Survive Without Me, which are designed to appeal to a wide audience and return annually for 15-episode seasons, and Stuart Fails To Save the Universe a spinoff of one of the biggest sitcoms in network history, CBS’ The Big Bang Theory.
While the Discovery content synergy did not work, “I would say a better experiment in terms of broadening out was what we did with The Pitt,” Bloys said. “That show has been so successful not only in the Emmys and not only in its performance but it has actually broadened out people on HBO Max who tend to watch the library movies or library series [and] are consumers of The Pitt, as well as some HBO subscribers. So you successfully broadened it out, and you haven’t radically changed the value proposition.”
There is some overlap in the two streamer’s original slates too. Many of the Paramount+ series greenlights by Holland’s regime, including Discretion, starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, are considered HBO-like shows that would fit on either brand.
The combination of HBO Max and Paramount+ will bring together the entire Big Bang franchise: Stuart, the libraries of the mothership and spinoff Young Sheldon and next-day episodes of fellow spinoff Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which airs on CBS. And speaking of CBS, Bloys started his career there, and he also worked at HBO Independent Productions during the final stretch of the hit CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, which the unit produced, providing him with some experience in network programming for the masses.
Also, he had been able to successfully expand his purview and expertise. As a comedy executive, he faced initial skepticism whether he could handle drama when he succeeded Michael Lombardo as HBO President of Programming in 2016. After proving himself there, Bloys overcame similar doubts whether he could adapt to streaming when given the reins of HBO Max, now home of hit originals such as The Pitt and successful acquisitions such as Heated Rivalry.

Anson Williams shares shirtless selfie and age-defying message at 77

Anson Williams is feeling better than ever at 77.
The actor, best known for playing Potsie Weber on the beloved sitcom “Happy Days,” shared a shirtless selfie Saturday while celebrating his health, creativity and continued career.
“My yearly reminder to every Boomer: NEVER let anyone diminish us because of our age,” Williams wrote in the Instagram caption.
‘X-FILES’ STAR DAVID DUCHOVNY SHARES HOW HE CONQUERED HIS ‘NUMBER ONE FEAR’ LATER IN LIFE
“I’m 77. More creative, healthier, busier, more curious — and more alive than I was at 40,” he continued, crediting his partner, “good lovin’,” kindness, adventure and “a little discipline” for his outlook.
He added that there are “mountains still worth climbing,” and lastly gave “the absolute refusal to let anyone else decide my worth” as a reason for why he’s thriving.
Williams also encouraged his followers to continue pursuing their goals.
“We didn’t come this far to become invisible,” he wrote. “We came this far to become unstoppable. We’re not winding down. We’re still winning — and we haven’t even played our best hand yet.”
Williams’ message of vitality comes decades after he experienced the overwhelming side of fame while “Happy Days” was at the height of its popularity.
In a previous interview with Fox News Digital, Williams recalled being mobbed by thousands of fans during a concert at the Del Mar Racetrack in California.

“I ended up face-down. On the field. Literally, I couldn’t breathe,” he said. Williams added that his shirt was torn, and he was bleeding before his manager pulled him into a nearby trailer.
“I’m thinking, ‘I don’t know about this fame stuff,’” Williams recalled.

Williams appeared on all 11 seasons of “Happy Days,” which ran from 1974 to 1984. The series also starred Ron Howard, Henry Winkler and Don Most.
The longtime friends reunited publicly in 2025 for the first time in five decades during a panel at Steel City Con in Pittsburgh.
“It feels like 50 minutes,” Howard said during the reunion. “We’re having so much fun hanging, and this is sort of our great excuse to come together.”
After “Happy Days” ended, Williams shifted his focus behind the camera. He went on to direct episodes of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Melrose Place,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Xena: Warrior Princess,” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Charmed.”

Williams has also remained busy in his personal life.
He married writer and real estate broker Sharon MaHarry in 2023 after the pair reconnected years after first meeting when she sold him a home.
During a previous interview with Fox News Digital, Williams described their relationship as “selfless love” and “an undefinable chemistry.”
The couple also collaborated on the off-Broadway production “Crazy Mama: A True Story of Love and Madness,” based on MaHarry’s memoir. Williams directed the play, which stars his former “Happy Days” co-star Linda Purl.

David Ellison Rallies the Troops at Warner Bros. Lot

“Today is Day 1. We have a long runway ahead of us, and we have a tremendous amount of work to do.”
That was one of the lines that Skydance chief David Ellison told those assembled in the Steven J. Ross Theatre at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank on Tuesday, the day he could finally call those working there his employees.
Ellison mentioned what a long, hard road it was to acquire the storied studio and also said there would be some pain ahead. But he kept his messaging on the idea of building something that could rival the biggest companies in the attention economy.
“When we set out to acquire Paramount, we did so with an even larger ambition,” he said, in remarks shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “We believed then — and we believe even more strongly today — that this industry needs another company with the scale, resources, technology and creative firepower to go toe-to-toe with the biggest players in the world.”
He continued, “Because the competitive landscape has fundamentally changed. We’re not just competing with traditional media companies anymore. We’re competing for people’s time and attention with some of the largest and most sophisticated technology companies in the world — companies with enormous scale, global reach and virtually unlimited resources. So we set out to build a company capable of meeting that moment.”
A sizzle reel highlighting the combined IP from both companies played before the speeches, which a source describes as “impressive,” underscoring the vast entertainment empire that has been created.
Ellison introduced his leadership team, from president Andy Gordon and CFO Dennis Cinelli to Skydance’s co-chairs and chief creative officers Casey Bloys and George Cheeks, to co-chairs of the Skydance motion picture group Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein, among others, while also giving a nod to Gerry Cardinale of RedBird.
Outside, workers were adding fresh paint to the iconic Warner Bros. water tower. The new addition? Text below the logo that said “a Skydance Corporation,” mirroring similar language a few miles away at the Paramount lot in Hollywood.
Offering a bit more detail on the plans was Ynon Kreiz, the executive who is largely seen as the man who will not only make sure that vision gets executed but is also the exec who will make the decisions on cost and jobs cutting. One source said that the former Mattel CEO came off as an “intense dude.”
Laying out the goals of the company, Kriez said the team would work to “establish Skydance as the premier Hollywood content engine … accelerate our integrated DTC platform … and optimize our highly profitable linear TV portfolio, reaching audiences globally across every entertainment vertical, anchored by CBS, the crown jewel of broadcast television.”
To do that, he continued, would require winning in storytelling and building the most technologically capable media company, among other goals.
“To win, we have to be innovative. Innovation can be anywhere. Not only in the great content that we make, or in our new tech stack that will be second to none,” Kreiz told the audience. “Innovation can happen in every part of the company, in any job, by any one, and we should all look to improve on what we have here today, find betters way to do things and challenge conventions. And we will have plenty of opportunities to develop new businesses, products, games and experiences to engage fans wherever they are and be where the consumer is going. Our industry rewards those who push forward, and we intend to lead the way.”
After their remarks, Ellison and Kreiz were interviewed by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who asked about what comes next for the company, as well as for CNN. Ellison said that he has full confidence in CNN chief Mark Thompson and supports its editorial independence. He also said that he supports CNN’s efforts to get full access to cover the White House, which has restricted its access alongside MS NOW and Politico, sparking a lawsuit.
Ellison was also asked about Secretary Pete Hegseth’s comments from earlier this year, in which he blasted “more fake news from CNN.”
“No quarter, no mercy for our enemies. Yet some in the press just can’t stop,” Hegseth said. “The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.”
Ellison said that he had seen the quote but didn’t know what Hegseth was talking about.
And yet, some left the town hall underwhelmed. The big question on everyone’s mind remains whether they will have jobs in the future, and while Ellison nodded in the direction of the changes to come, the scope could not be ascertained.
“Bringing together two companies of this size and complexity will require difficult decisions. There will be changes, and there will be impacts. I’m not going to pretend otherwise,” Ellison told the staff. “What I can promise you is that we will move through those decisions as quickly and thoughtfully as we can. We will communicate directly. We will tell you what we know when we know it. And we will not allow a prolonged integration process to distract us from the reason we brought these companies together in the first place: which is to build the next-generation media and entertainment company.”

Soap opera star Robert Kelker-Kelly has died, according to a Missouri medical examiner’s office. He was 62.
A spokesperson for the Missouri Office of the Regional Medical Examiner, which serves Franklin, Jefferson, and St. Charles counties, confirmed in a statement to NBC News that Kelker-Kelly died on Saturday.
The medical examiner’s office did not list the cause of death, and said that its “normal timeline for death certification is approximately 12 weeks,” according to the spokesperson. The office did not have any additional information to share at this time, the spokesperson said.
Kelker-Kelly was best known for playing Bo Brady on “Days of Our Lives” from 1992 to 1995 and Stavros Cassadine on “General Hospital” from 2001 to 2014.

Warner Bros. Water Tower Repainted to Add ‘A Skydance Corporation’

David Ellison wasted no time in adding the Skydance name to the iconic Warner Bros. water tower in Burbank.
On Tuesday morning, shortly after Paramount officially closed its $111 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery to form Skydance, the famous landmark on the Warner Bros. studio lot was updated with a new line: “A Skydance Corporation.”
There’s precedent for the move: After Ellison closed Skydance Media’s takeover of Paramount Global in August 2025, the water tower on the Paramount Pictures Studios lot in Hollywood was updated to add “A Skydance Corporation” as well. That indicates, by the way, that Ellison’s plan all along was to rename a merged Paramount-WBD as Skydance, the name of the film production firm he founded in 2006.
Here’s a photo of workers adding the Skydance name to the WB water tower:
The merger — which had been opposed by many actors, filmmakers and other industry professionals — brings together the two major studios; TV networks including CBS, CNN, Comedy Central, MTV and TNT; and streaming services Paramount+ and HBO Max. The new Skydance will have annual revenue of nearly $70 billion, according to the company, but it also will have to manage paying down some $80 billion in net debt.
The Ellison family, with the backing of Larry Ellison, David’s multibillionaire father, holds the largest equity stake in Skydance. The Ellisons and investment firm RedBird Capital Partners together are the sole holders of Paramount Class A common stock, which gives them 100% control of the combined company’s voting shares.
David Ellison, who is the new Skydance’s chairman and CEO, and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz (formerly chief exec of Mattel) sent a lengthy memo to employees at the combined company Tuesday morning. They outlined their goals for Skydance, while acknowledging that there will be job cuts coming as a result of integrating the operations of Paramount and Warner Bros.
“Integrating two companies will bring change, including difficult decisions that affect our workforce,” the execs wrote in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by Variety. “We are committed to handling this process thoughtfully and respectfully.”
In a town hall Tuesday with employees of the former Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, which was livestreamed around the globe, both Ellison and Kreiz also delivered remarks from L.A.
“Let’s be honest – it wasn’t easy to get here,” Ellison told staffers of the new Skydance, according to a source. “At times it was downright ugly. And at nearly every turn, someone told us it couldn’t be done. And here we are.” He continued: “I’m not telling you this to relive it. I’m telling you because every setback, every hard night, every moment when it would have been easier to walk away, was worth it. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Why? Because of what we now get to build together.”
The town hall included a Q&A session with the two execs, moderated by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
