13 Unwritten Rules To Know Before Visiting Culver’s

Culver’s isn’t a typical fast-food restaurant. It’s an icon of Midwestern food. To understand this chain you must start with its birth state, Wisconsin. Wisconsin has an incredibly diverse food culture that is shaped by the state’s history, geography and population. Culver’s pays homage to these regional traditions with dishes like cheese curds, butter burgers and custard.
Growing up in Wisconsin I was taught the rules that govern Culver’s as well as the food culture of the state without being explicitly instructed. After moving out of Wisconsin, I learned that Wisconsin is known for its unique food culture and rituals such as the Friday fish fry.
Culver’s is now available nationwide and easily falls into the categories of fast-food restaurants or fast casual. The successful franchise, however, is more than just a business plan that makes money — it pays homage to Wisconsin’s cultural traditions. Culver’s is a fast-food chain with a rare sense of honor and integrity.
Culver’s ButterBurger honors its nameake’s tradition. The Wisconsin favorite, butter burgers can be found at many restaurants in the state. They may share the same ingredients as a standard burger but to consider them identical is an utter faux pas in Wisconsin.
The top bun is what sets them apart. Butter burgers are distinguished by a top bun that is lightly toasted and slathered in fresh butter. The amount of butter and the type can vary, but Wisconsin has one unwritten law for this delicacy. Culver’s adheres to it.
Culver’s butterburgers are infused with a delicious flavor, and each bite is bursting with a crunchy texture. The patty, which is made from a mixture of premium cuts, is never frozen and always fresh. This results in a patty with a crispier texture and more flavor that complements the buttered toast. Culver employees will not scold for eating a hamburger. The ButterBurger version is more upscale.
Culver’s isn’t a joker when it comes to portion sizes. Culver’s onion rings in the family style are what they say — intended for multiple persons. Culver’s customers are always amazed at the quantity of onion rings that come with a large order.
Culver’s onion rings have a dual-loved taste. These rings are made from whole, white onions which have been cut into thick slices and then dunked in a crunchy, seasoned batter. These rings are a hit on review and social media sites. Culver’s onion rings are the last meal of a Redditor who claims that “if I were on death row Culver’s would be my final meal.”
Even the most delicious onion rings aren’t as good on the second day. To enjoy Culver’s onion rings at their best, make sure you eat them as soon as possible. It’s for this reason that I do not recommend ordering the onion rings in the family style if you are only one person. You won’t believe how much food this order contains until you see for yourself.
There’s an easy trick to get your leftover onion rings as close to Culver standards as possible. You can air-fry Culver’s leftover onion rings if you have to.
Wisconsin is synonymous with cheese, which makes it no surprise that Culver’s Cheese Sauce stands out on the menu.
The words “cheese” may conjure up images of low-quality condiments, but this sauce is not your average artificial nacho. This chain is serious about cheese and uses a recipe that includes real Wisconsin cheddar in its signature sauce.
Culver’s onion rings and crinkle cut fries are obvious partners to the cheese sauce. But they’re not exclusive. It’s a great sauce to pour over anything, including the cod dinner. Culver’s cheese curds dipped into cheese sauce, fresh out of the fryer is my favorite combination. It’s the essence of Wisconsin flavors. This is the perfect snack for cheese lovers.
Many fast-food restaurants are known for their sauces and condiments. But this particular sauce is my personal favorite. Culver’s cheese sauce is an essential part of every meal.
Don’t simply say, “chicken sandwiches, please,” when you approach the Culver’s counter. Culver’s has three distinct types of chicken sandwich.
Culver’s menu of chicken products includes the Crispy Crispy Sandwich, Spicy Crispy Crispy Sandwich and Grilled Chiken Sandwich. The chicken is white meat, but the toppings and methods of preparation vary. Crispy chicken sandwich is a classic, with a crunchy batter that’s seasoned and deliciously crispy. Spicy Crispy Chicken has a similar taste, but it is also seasoned with three peppers. Culver’s Grilled Chicken is a lighter option that contains marinated chicken and is grilled. All are served with lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, mayonnaise and mayonnaise.
These are some tips for ordering the perfect Culver’s chicken sandwich. Use the deluxe options like bacon, mushrooms, grilled onion, etc. Add a cheese slice.
Some people might think that the North Atlantic Cod Dinner is a variation of the Culver’s fish and chips. The British dish is similar to Culver’s Cod Dinner, so it’s fair that they compare. But Culver’s Cod Dinner offers much more.
Culver’s North Atlantic Cod Dinner includes filets (filets) of fried fish, dinner rolls, two side dishes of your choosing, and tartar. Culver’s has high standards for its cod, and only sources it from the Barents Sea just above the Arctic Circle. Each piece of fish, once it arrives at Culver’s, is battered to order and then fried. The batter was light, yet crispy and perfectly spiced. It is a generously-sized platter at a very reasonable price. Culver’s North Atlantic Cod Dinner is superior to many fried fish plates that cost more. It’s also available with cheese curds.
Culver’s is proud of this plate, which was inspired by Wisconsin’s own tradition of fried fish. In Wisconsin, restaurants celebrate the Friday Fish Fry, a tradition that originated from Catholic traditions of not eating white or red meat on Fridays.
Wisconsinites who observed this tradition found a fun way to do it by creating Supper Clubs. The Friday fish fry was a popular tradition that people looked forward to every week. The North Atlantic Cod Dinner is available daily and was inspired by the love of camaraderie that this practice brought to the table.
North Atlantic Cod Dinner is a winner. Culver’s Classic: crunchy, delicious, crispy, flavorful and filling. Culver’s fans and employees do indeed call it the “North Atlantic Cod Dinner” with dignity. The unwritten rule is meant to honor a Wisconsin-based creation.
Sitting down is the best way to experience Culver’s. You can also order out or drive through, but the atmosphere will be missing. You’ll also be able decide when to order dessert.
This is my method: I buy my main dish and my custard separately. Who wants to hurry through their dinner just to save themselves from a disaster dessert? Custard should not be left out, even if it is melting slower. Due to the addition of pasteurized eggs, frozen custard will not stay cold for long. Wait to order your frozen custard until you’ve finished your main meal if you prefer it ice-cold and creamy.
You’re in luck if you see a combo for kids anywhere on the order. Culver’s offers a scoop of free custard with every Culver’s kid’s meal. You can redeem it the same day. You can get the exact custard you want by waiting until after your meal to place an order. This is an unwritten rule, but it’s a good one.
Remember that unwritten rule regarding the North Atlantic Cod Dinner tradition? The rule is related to Friday’s fish fry.
Wisconsin’s breweries and many of its taverns suffered hard times during Prohibition. Friday fish fries were a popular choice. These dining establishments chose freshwater walleye because it was cheap and easy to catch. Walleye remains a favorite fish for Wisconsin’s famous fish fry. It’s not just delicious, but also nostalgic. The sweet, clean flavor, and the lighter, flakier consistency, are both delightful.
Culver’s offers its Northwoods walleye during the Lenten period as a tribute. Fans look forward to this dish all year. This is a clever way to honor the history of the Culver’s chain, as well as a good option for people who abstain during Lent. Even if you do not observe Lent you cannot miss out on this special treat.
Culver’s and its many menu options are my favorite. Having said that, Culver’s fries may not always be the best when they are served in their original form. They can become cold and soggy very quickly because they are thicker, softer and crinklier than other french fries from fast food restaurants. Here’s a rule that isn’t written down: You can make these fries into some of the most delicious ever. Culver’s customers know that they should order their fries extra crisp.
You’ll enjoy a number of benefits by asking your fries be extra crisp. The size of the fries makes it possible to have a crunchy outer layer without losing the soft center. Double frying ensures that your fries will be hot, fresh and out of the frying pan when you bag them. The crinkle-shaped fries can cause sogginess. However, making them extra crisp can solve this issue. Double-frying the unique shape enhances its crunchy texture, similar to a curly fries.
Here’s a last tip: Dip your extra-crispy crinkle cut fries in Culver cheese sauce. You must try it.
Culver’s kids’ menu is by far my favorite. You should know that I’d never order from the children’s menu at any other restaurant. What’s the difference? Culver’s ButterBurger kids’ meals are a great value and come with surprisingly large portions of food.
Culver’s Kids’ Burgers are not that much smaller than their adult equivalent. The meal also comes with a drink and small fries. There is also a coupon redeemable for a scoop of free custard. Culver’s offers my perfect ButterBurger Kids’ Meal, which includes a ButterBurger and all of my favorite items in a single bag: root beer, cheese curds, custard (you can substitute fries with these), and a ButterBurger. It costs significantly less to buy an adult meal combo. It’s enough food for me, even without the custard coupons.
It’s a great deal, and I’m surprised Culver’s lets customers of any age order this section. Culver’s will have me ordering from the children’s menu as long as it continues to do so.
Culver’s website and menu both adhere to the correct dessert terminology. This is a point of unwritten pride as Wisconsin’s sweets have played a significant role in its cultural history and traditions.
Wisconsinites will tell you that malts and milkshakes are two different things. Malts are also made from malted milk. Malted milk powder was invented by a Wisconsin company. It adds an extra toasty flavor, as well as a thicker and heavier texture.
Custard, soft serve, and ice cream are not all the same. Both ice cream and soft-serve are made from the same ingredients: milk, sugar, cream, etc. The amount of fat in ice-cream is higher than that used in frozen custard.
Culver’s custard is a frozen classic, but it’s not the same. It’s made from milk, sugar and cream but it also requires egg yolks. The addition of egg yolks transforms the consistency and texture of this dessert. Custards must also have a higher amount of fat, just like ice-cream. These definitions are very important in the Dairy State. Culver’s is a representative and ensures that its menu items have the correct titles and are prepared to standards.
Culver’s has a unique soda. Culver’s Root Beer, by far the most popular soda at this chain fast food restaurant.
It’s the signature recipe of this restaurant. Craig Culver was inspired by the old-fashioned roots beer he drank as a teenager. He knew that he had to create his version.
Wisconsin has many long-standing breweries that had to switch to root beer when prohibition began — thus the root beer obsession in the state. Culver’s Root Beer is a customer favorite, beating out stiff competition with its creamy, thick foam and vanilla flavor.
This root beer has only one drawback, and Culver employees would like customers to stop asking for it. If you dispense the root beer quickly, you will only get foam. If you want to order root beer for takeout, make sure to include special instructions to prevent a cup full of foam.
Culver’s Root Beer is worth all the effort. Culver superfans, including myself included, say that it is the best soda to pair with a Culver meal. When paired with Culver’s custard, it makes one of the most delicious root beer floats.
Culver is known for its custard, and so it’s no surprise that the company offers a variety of delicious flavors.
Culver’s menu is dominated by flavors like Georgia Peach and Chocolate Covered Strawberry. These, to my mind, are superior to the vanilla or chocolate standard. For fellow custard lovers, here’s a rule that’s unwritten: you don’t need to wait for the flavor to be revealed. Culver’s Rewards Program includes a “flavor prediction” each month to ensure customers do not miss out on their favorite flavors.
Many of these flavors-of-the day are must-trys on their own. There is a way around this if, like me, you love the toppings or Concrete Mixer.
Concrete Mixers are essentially a homemade McFlurry or Blizzard, with the addition of custard. The only base choices are vanilla and chocolate. However, the mix can be made more exciting by substituting the custard for the one advertised.
This is an explanation. You can order two toppings for free with Concrete Mixers. For example, you can order standard chocolate to which you add M&Ms or Oreos. Or, you can order Chocolate Explosion, which includes M&Ms, Oreos, Dove Chocolate, and Chocolate Syrup, then add two additional toppings.
This is a great hack for those who love to add as many toppings possible. This tasty hack offers 36 different daily flavors, plus over 20 topping options.
Culver’s never refuses an order placed two minutes prior to closing. Employees secretly complain about those customers who exceed the hours of operation.
It’s not a new thing to know that late-night ordering etiquette applies in any restaurant. Fast food is usually given a pass because convenience and availability are the main reasons for its popularity. Culver’s, a hybrid fast-food and casual restaurant chain that is technically a hybrid of both fast food chains, has a different approach to this. The drive-thrus are available in the restaurants, but the chain is a family restaurant that has more customers sitting down than any other.
It is important to remember that ordering at the last minute and staying up late in a restaurant can cause employees’ work shifts to be extended exponentially. Culver’s is a franchise that values honesty and detail. This extends even to their closing procedure. Culver late-night staff members are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting custard machines, as well as mopping the floors. These tasks can only be completed once everyone has left. Culver employees are frustrated by customers who stay past closing time.
My hot take is that driving or picking up food a few moments before closing time are fine. It’s rude to reserve a table and then leave before the restaurant can do so.

Disgusting details of 10K LA street food vending complaints revealed

Dog eating the meat from a street vendor’s bag, before being served to clients. Cockroaches crawling from a food trailer. Mice running alongside open salsa. Unrefrigerated raw meat is baking in heat. Urinating near cooking equipment.
This is just one of many stomach-churning accusations listed in an overwhelming 662-page document of 9,746 complaints filed by Los Angeles County residents about food street vendors between 2023 and early 2026.
California Post obtained the details through a request for public records. LA Mayor Karen Bass, who ordered this week that the LAPD stop criminalizing street vendors violating the law, revealed the disgusting facts.
This move could make conditions worse by allowing unpermitted food trucks to roam the streets of the city.
The Post’s complaints to the LA County Department of Public Health are disturbing, as they offer no indication of any actions taken to respond to these alleged sickening discoveries.
A complainant said that workers at a taco shop near Hawthorne Boulevard had no place to wash their hand and were not changing gloves.
The complaint said that a dog had also eaten meat out of the bag, and yet the man continued to use the bag.
Closed was the case.
Another complainant near LAX reported that mice were running around the trashcans where open condiments and salsa was found.
The complaint has been canceled.
In Venice Beach, hot dogs, buns, and condiments were allegedly “heating up in the sun” all day.
The complaint in that instance was considered “justified” and no additional details were provided.
LA County Public Health Department refused to give specifics on what these determinations mean or if any actions were taken as a consequence.
Subscribe to our email newsletter, download the California Post app, or follow us on Facebook.
The agency has instead “shifted its focus from street-level unpermitted food vendors enforcement to instead target larger organizations who control many street-level operations to enforce at the source.”
Stuart Waldman of the Los Angeles Business Federation called the complaints about street vendors, “worse” than he thought.
He told The Post that it was “crazy” to believe that an entire brick-and mortar restaurant could be closed down because employees didn’t wash hands or left butter on the counter overnight.
The street vendors do not have restrooms, their employees don’t wash their hands and they have no refrigeration.
George Francisco, chair of Westside Council of Chambers of Commerce, and co-chair of Los Angeles County Business Federation’s Responsible Governance committee, stated that the complaints are “not unexpected.”
He told The Post, “I have seen worse. I may even be more personally.” The idea that a truck would pull up, with slabs on compressed meat in the back being placed onto a skewer, and then roasted to sell is disgusting.
Los Angeles requires sidewalk vending permits for those who sell food, and LA County Public Health permits for vendors selling alcohol.
Food safety is overseen by the county, while other city rules govern where and how food vendors may operate.
Bass stated that her office stands “firmly” with street sellers, and directed the LAPD not to criminalize them if they do not have required permits, or if their stalls are set up outside brick-and mortar storefronts.
She is working with her administration to have criminal citations thrown out that were, according to her, improperly issued. She did not answer questions regarding the complaints.
Bass is at odds with Nithya, Raman’s opponent, in her mayoral campaign, who argues that the city must make it easier to enter the legal system and obtain permits for vendors.
In a letter to The Post, her office stated that street vending was a vital part of Los Angeles. It can exist alongside brick-and mortar businesses if vendors follow all rules and regulations, are safe, operate cleanly and have a valid license.
We have strict regulations to ensure vendors meet health and safety requirements, but a citywide enforcement requires efficient departments.
As of September 2024, there were only 687 vending licenses active in LA. Of those 687 permits, only 53 were issued to food vendors.
On a visit to Pico-Union’s El Salvador Corridor, I noticed vendors set up in areas with red curbs, and other places where selling is prohibited. Grease and dirty water were spilling out of the gutter.
Raul Claros estimates that there are now more than 120 street sellers in the El Salvador Corridor Association.
He said, “It is the Wild Wild West” of the corridor. It has become a cultural and commercial hub for Salvadoran immigrants.
Claros does not want vendors to be chased away, but rather issued them permits and inspected. They are also given areas where they can safely sell without crowding sidewalks or directly outside of existing businesses.
Claros said to The Post that while state laws made street vending less susceptible to criminal prosecution, local governments were left to run the system.
The issue has a special meaning for Miguel Carranza, his wife Irma, and their children.
Carranza, who immigrated to the United States from El Salvador in 2007, started out as a street seller. The couple then moved on to open a food trailer and a brick and mortar business. In 2010, they opened El Corredor Restaurant along this corridor.
After surviving inflation and COVID, the business now faces a new challenge.
El Corredor is a popular lunchtime destination, but it can be largely empty as street vendors vie for the same customers without having to pay rent or other overhead.
Brenda Montoya is a second generation business owner in the area. She remembers the neighborhood as it was before the COVID, and when street vendors were a lot more prevalent outside of her shop.
Montoya, The Post’s Montoya: “Everything was better here. The economy is much stronger.” It was packed. “You couldn’t park here.”
She said that customers were scarce now, as some street vendors sold the same products offered by shops paying rent only feet away.
She said, “Right Now, everything seems to be kind of empty. No sales.”

Freedom Fuel owner didn’t pay for nearly $4 million in gas: Lawsuit

A supplier has sued the owner of Freedom Fuel Network, claiming that they owe them nearly $4 million. The lawsuit was filed at the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
The lawsuit, filed on August 19 by Mansfield Oil Company of Gainesville, Inc., states that a company which owns Freedom Fuel Network stores purchased approximately 1,112,594 gallon of gasoline from May 21, to July 7, this year, at a fuel transfer terminal located in Delaware County.
According to the suit, Mansfield claims that it was not paid for fuel. It is also owed an amount of $3,998,868.46.
According to the complaint, the KRSM, Inc., a foreign company with its principal business address at Lawrenceville, New Jersey, is the plaintiff. Syed Kazmi was listed in the lawsuit as KRSM president.
The lawsuit claimed that “KRSM sold fuel at such low prices, and gained such public attention because it had never paid Plaintiffs for this fuel.”
Documents from court show that a judge granted Mansfield a preliminary order ordering KRSM keep $2,750,000 or more in an account while the case proceeds.
NBC10 is in contact with the attorney for KRSM & Kazmi.

According to Associated Press reports, Kazmi was previously ordered by a court to pay damages civilly for illegally taking over 200,000 gallons fuel.
A federal judge ordered Syed Kazmi to pay $600,000.00 to the fuel company that had accused them of gas theft. In court documents, the supplier claimed that they cut off the brothers after refusing to sign a contract. The Kazmis took advantage of a security breach and gained entry to the fuel depot. According to court documents from the fuel supplier, over a 10-day period, in August 2021 more than 230,000 gallon of gas was stolen. The judge found in favor of the supplier, and that the brothers illegally stole the gas
NBC10 Responds discovered that Freedom Fuel Network is owned by a group of companies in Delaware. However, the AP reports that fourteen Freedom Fuel Stations are owned and operated by Syed Kazmi’s company.
Trump Promotes the Promotion of Trump
Freedom Fuel Network’s cheap gasoline and its open support for President Donald Trump have been promoted several times by the White House and Donald Trump.
On July 1, Trump posted on Truth Social that the retailer was “very smart” and located in the Northeast. The United States has never been more powerful than now. Gas prices will be returning to their record lows before the successful “excursion” in Iran.
A few days after the initial post, the White House posted on X announcing the opening of Freedom Fuel stations and produced a short video of customers waving cash outside a store decorated with American flags with a golden eagle symbol.
Freedom Fuel Network announced on their website that they “responded to President Trump’s request to reduce prices at the pumps.” Our company didn’t hesitate. We took immediate action to lower our prices and make it more affordable for families in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
On its website, the company said that since opening their locations they have experienced “explosive” growth. Stations on average saw sales rise by more than 50%.

Pabst Blue Ribbon truck stolen in $70K California beer cargo theft

Police in California say a truck containing 40,000 lbs of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer vanished. They believe the theft could have been part of an egregious cargo-theft operation, which stole $70,000 worth of alcohol in one morning.
Pabst Blue Ribbon claimed that its beer and truck were stolen. It told the culprits it was understandable to want to boast about the amount of PBR but they wished it had been obtained “the right way”.
The company offered the thief 18 days, 44 minutes and no questions to return the vehicle.
After a purchase by an adult toy company, a used car lot recovered hundreds of thousands in stolen goods.
Pabst said that it will also offer a reward for anyone who can crack the case. However, it didn’t disclose what it was willing to pay.
The company has not explained the strange countdown. However, it is possible that the window of 18 days and 44 minutes was a reference to the founding year, 1844.
Later, the brand issued a post to dispel any doubts about whether or not this bizarre disappearance had been a stunt.
Pabst wrote: “This story is true. Anyone with any information which could assist in solving the case should send an immediate message.”
The company said that as the date approached, “the beer is warming up” and the trail was getting colder.
Anyone who believes they have spotted this truck is asked to take a picture, tag Pabst on social media or send an email with the location.
Montclair Police are looking into two thefts of cargo reported on August 17th at a distribution center for Anheuser Busch that they believe may be connected.
Police said that in the first case, an order worth $45,000 bound for Tucson was collected for delivery at 10 am local time, but it never arrived.
Aliens TRUCKERS UNQUALIFIED AND ILLEGAL ON US ROADS ARE OUTSIDE CONTROL. INSIDER WARNS : “JUST MADNESS”
Police said that about an hour after the theft, a fake subcontractor company used fraudulent documents to pick up approximately $25,000 worth of Anheuser-Busch products and Pabst Blue Ribbon.
The investigators found discrepancies in the information provided by the trucking companies, drivers and vehicles attached to the pickups.
Police said that the cases could be related to a fraudulent cargo theft scheme.
NEWSOM BLASTED BY SHEAR IN HIS OWN BACKYARD OVER CALIFORNIA CRIME, AS VICTIMS CRY OUT FOUL
Police have not released any details on the disappearance of the beer or the location where it may have been.
The investigators have also not made any public announcements, which leaves open the question of whether or not the shipment is still intact or if it has been already broken down and distributed.
Comment sections on beer brands quickly turned into kegs-sized comedy clubs. The beer brand’s comments section quickly became a keg-sized comedy club.
Kit Kat verified account also joined the conversation, stating “I’m familiar with these types of situations,” referring to an incident that occurred in Italy on March 26, when a truck containing 12 tons of Formula 1-shaped KitKats was stolen.
A second commenter suggested the likely location for 40,000 lbs of beer missing: “Someone’s going to throw a big house party.”

Sony Music, Warner sue Anthropic, alleging a “brazen campaign” of intellectual property theft

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell, as well as numerous other music publishing companies, have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, Dario Amodei, and Benjamin Mann. They claim that the AI Lab conducted an “insidious campaign” of downloading, scraping and torrenting copyrighted material.
Music Business Worldwide was the first to report the lawsuit. It was filed in late Friday at the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California. Anthropic is accused by the publishers of “blatant stealing” for using copyrighted materials to train its AI Claude.
Anthropic’s spokesperson sent an email to TechCrunch saying that they disagreed with these claims. They also stated their intention to vigorously defend themselves in court.
Anthropic is not the first company to face a lawsuit over intellectual property. The same attorneys who filed this suit also represented Concord Music Group, Universal Music Group, and the Bartz v. Anthropic lawsuit in which a number of authors accused Anthropic using copyrighted work to train products such as Claude. Anthropic has been ordered to pay $1.5billion in the Bartz landmark case, after a court ruled it legal for AI labs to use copyrighted content. However, acquiring that content via piracy was illegal.
There are some key differences between the two cases, even though they make similar arguments. The latest suit is very broad, and it builds on the previous cases. Anthropic has been accused of “flagrant piratery” by illegally torrenting millions of books that include lyrics and sheet-music.
Anthropic’s comments has been added to the article.

A Simple Strategy To Get 6.5% Dividends From Surging Bond Yields

We’ll talk about the latest jump in Treasury yields, and what that means to those of us who are looking to invest (and earn a reliable income!) retirement.
The truth is that it is completely different from what mainstream media wants to tell us. This situation gives us the opportunity to lock-in high yields – I’m thinking north of 6% – as long as it continues.
The yields on government bonds are on the increase. As of the time this article was written, 30-year Treasuries yields are just under a 19-year high.
Many reasons are at play: AI has increased economic growth, the Strait of Hormuz closings sent oil prices soaring and the US Government is spending too much. All of these are inflationary and cause long-term Treasury rates to increase.
This is a worrying situation (for the US Government and consumers who have high levels of debt). Beyond that, the picture of AI-driven growth is mixed, but it’s still good if you are invested in technology.
The US economy is resilient, and continues to grow at a high rate. The Fed may be less inclined to reduce rates and even raise them. This again puts upward pressures on the long-term Treasury Yields.
More for You
The New York Times, for example, could print a headline that said, “The Bond Market is Signaling Rising Risques.” MarketWatch warns that “Investors Should Listen” and MarketWatch says, “The Treasury’s bond market intervention doesn’t work.”
Rising Bond Yields
The reality, however, is that some people are better off than others. If, for instance, you wish to make a long-term investment in Treasuries today, this will lock in a very high return.
You’ll also get more yield if you invest in any type of bond, since other bonds tend to rise along with long-term US Treasury bills. All bonds are competing for the same investors.
This is evident when looking at the index funds that represent long-term Treasuries (iShares TLT, in purple) and US corporate high-yield bonds (State Street SPDR JNK High-Yield Bond Index Fund (JNK), both in orange.
The small movements are actually positive for the bond market, as they tend to be slow in times of calm economy (and, I would argue, we may actually be in a calmer time than headlines suggest).
It’s the differences that matter: corporate bonds and long term Treasuries marched in lock-step up until recent times, when long-term Treasuries fell suddenly (remember prices were down and yields increased, and vice versa). It’s important to note that corporate bonds are still popular with investors. They may also be a good investment as rates increase.
What to do when bond yields climb
A number of funds, which have been lagging behind the market in a large range, are now seeing a surge. One example is the Highland Opportunities and Income Fund HFRO (closed-end closed fund) with a yield of 6.5%.
HFRO has interests in a variety of real-estate projects throughout America as well as lending to corporate and real-estate projects. These assets are all closely tied to the movements of bond yields.
The fund’s return on total assets was relatively flat in the past year with some dips in the early years of 2026. However, in the recent weeks, investors developed a taste for rates-sensitive investments. This is boosting HFRO’s total return while its dividend of 6.5% benefits investors. On the valuation front, there’s also something to be excited about:
Funds are still underpriced with 41% off the net asset value. Investors are grabbing this opportunity because the average CEF discount currently stands at 5.5%.
Investors may be more interested in funds such as HFRO if corporate bonds or other assets that are rate sensitive gain more popularity. But there is a catch. As they purchase more, their yield decreases, as higher prices also mean lower returns.
The average CEF yield is 8.9%. So, this discount may not be as large as it seems.
