Ukraine urgently tries to develop interceptors that can counter a new Russian drone generation powered by jet engines, which has caused havoc in the country over recent months.
The jet-drones, along with ballistic missiles and the new cruise missile from the Kremlin, have been responsible for massive destruction in the area around Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital.
In a war that is becoming more and more encompassing in its scope, they have been used against warehouses, petrol stations, post offices, factories, etc.
Geran-4s and Geran-5s, the jet-powered Shaheds drones that Russia purchased from Iran are harder to intercept due to their number and speed. The Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones are faster than the original Shaheds, which Russia purchased from Iran.
Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian president said on Sunday that drone attacks were constant and included many Shaheds with jet engines. Over the past four days almost 1,500 drones, of various types, were launched at Ukraine, with more than half being jet-powered.
In the last two months, the deployment of jet-powered drones accelerated. Serhiy Beksrestnov, a Zelensky adviser, said that more than 2,500 drones were deployed in August.
He said they were being “launched at Ukraine virtually straight from the plant” in a post on Facebook at the weekend. Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence claims that hundreds of parts made in foreign countries, such as the US, UK, and China, are included on the drones.
As Russia continues to bombard Kyiv day and night, many of these jet-powered drones are being fired into the capital. The Ukrainian military reported that Russia had fired 224 drones into Ukraine during daylight hours on Saturday, most of which were jet-powered. Kyiv was alerted to eight air raids on Sunday between dusk and midnight.
Ukrainian officials claim that the Kremlin aims to deplete Ukrainian air defences and ruin civilian morale by expanding its targets list to include food stores, warehouses, and other retail outlets, and continuing strikes on energy infrastructure.
Serhii Koreteskyi, Ukrainian prime minister said at the weekend that the enemy was trying to paralyze the economic activity of the major cities and capitals. Therefore our response and approach mechanisms need to change.
As children prepare for the start of a new school year, Russian strikes are intensifying.
Kyiv’s city office warned that it is likely lessons would be interrupted and asked parents to talk to their children about “some important but simple issues” – what to do in an emergency, how to take cover, or if caught in dangerous situations on the way to school.
It said that “in the current situation, this is as important as getting your school bag packed or your uniform prepared” for the new year.
The Chess Game of Innovation
Zelensky acknowledged that, for the time being, combat aircraft are the main defense against jet-powered drones. Ukraine’s air force, which is small and already overstretched, cannot afford to use fighter jets in order to combat drones.
The race continues in another chapter of the technology leapfrog race which has marked the war for nearly five years.
Zelensky stated that four companies had developed interceptor drones. One of them, Zelensky claimed, was “the best technology”. According to Evgeniy Khmara, field trials on the four candidates have begun. The Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara said that field trials have already begun on all four contenders.
The two challenges are very different. Pavlo Palisa said on Friday that offensive capabilities are always one step ahead. We will have to adjust. It will take some time.
Two jet-powered drones were reported downed by the Sting interceptor, a promising Ukrainian-made aircraft.
F-Drones is another Ukrainian company that has upgraded its interceptor. LITAVR+ was built because Russia is now using jet-powered Shahed Drones. “The upgraded interceptor can reach speeds over 400 km/h”, it announced on X.
Former Ukrainian defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov has also put countering jet-powered aircraft at the forefront of his agenda. He is currently in the United States exploring areas of collaboration with companies that specialize in defence technology “and other organizations who can help us strengthen Ukraine by becoming partners on our new projects.”
Fedorov wrote on X that “we also plan to create new ventures around technologies which are critical on the battlefield right now”, including robots for “removing personnel from front-line dangerous sectors” and AI-guided low-cost missiles.
Russian Banderol cannons target Ukraine’s maritime route
It is a never-ending battle for a technological advantage in conflict. The Ukraine’s mid-and long-range drones have been successfully developed, but Russia has created a low-cost cruise missile that it calls the Banderol.
It has an estimated range of 310 miles and can reach speeds of 405 to 385 miles per hour. The missile carries a warhead weighing 330 pounds (150 kilograms).
The range of the Banderol is enough to cover southern Ukraine from helicopters above Crimea. In recent weeks, dozens of Banderols were used to disrupt Ukraine’s grain imports by targeting the Port of Odessa.
According to Taras Viysotskyi the minister for agrarian policies, Ukraine exported only a third of its potential grain and oilseed exports since the start of August.
Dmytro Plenchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy in early August, said that Banderol’s attacks had slowed down operations on Ukraine’s Black Sea maritime corridor. According to sources in the industry, constant attacks make insurance on grain shipments prohibitively expensive.
Analysts believe that the Russian military is preparing to launch Banderol using drones, helicopters, and ground-based platforms.
Fedorov warned, after being dismissed in July by Zelensky and now in private practice, that Ukraine was “slowly, gradually losing” its war.
He told the Financial Times in Washington that, while the world’s situation changes from month to month, the recent Russian airstrikes and the ever increasing use of advanced drones and missiles are critical threats.
He said: “Right away, if they don’t address these problems, we will be smashed.”

The question of whether or not the Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered a new phase is becoming more pressing as Kyiv continues to be subjected to drone attacks, near constant air raid warnings and increasing waves in daylight — a departure from the barrages at night that residents have grown accustomed.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian president, said that Russia had launched more than 1,500 drones in four days. More than half were jet-powered. He accused Moscow of trying to weaken Ukraine and her population. Reuters reported that the attacks had repeatedly disrupted Kyiv’s metro system, and its daily commutes. Residents were forced to take shelter when air raid warnings are issued during daylight hours.
The attacks continue to send Kyiv’s residents into hiding as they try to regain some normality at the end summer.
RUSSIA USE NEARLY 600 MISILES AND DRONES IN THE DEADLIEST ATTACK SINCE MAY
Russian President Vladimir Putin intensified his attacks against Ukraine’s logistics and warehouses, causing damage to distribution centers that are used by large retailers as well as disrupting the food delivery system.
Russian drone strikes on Kyiv, and its surrounding area, continued for a fifth day in a row Monday. The attacks damaged warehouses, retail outlets, and residential properties.
These attacks are part a larger campaign to target Ukrainian logistics and commercial infrastructure. Reuters reported on August 28 that Russia targeted warehouses of major supermarket chains as well as the largest private Ukrainian postal service and retailers.
According to Ukraine’s agriculture minister Taras Viysotskyi, 90 percent of food distribution infrastructure used by retailers has been destroyed.

The President warned that Ukraine is vulnerable as Russia escalates its aerial campaigns.
Newton noted that there is a shortage of Patriot interceptors made in the United States. These systems are highly sought after around the globe.

This escalation is accompanied by new reports about Putin’s calcula-tions on how — or whether — to end the war.
According to The Economist, Putin is concerned that ending the conflict without achieving what he believes to be a minimal objective — controlling all of Donbas – could endanger his position as well as his safety.
The Economist cites an anonymous insider who claims that Putin told those around him, at one point in the war: “They’ll hang me.” Fox News Digital does not have independent confirmation of Putin’s remarks.
According to The Economist, dissatisfaction is rising among Russians. A part of the Russian elite has a more negative outlook. One source even argues that five years of war are a failure no matter what the outcome.
Newton said that NATO’s cohesion is becoming increasingly important due to the increasing confrontation.

The Harvest Moon will be visible for the first time in America on September 26 at sunset, when it appears over the eastern horizon of stars from the constellation Pisces.
Rayleigh scattering will cause the moon to glow a gorgeous yellow-orange as it filters through Earth’s atmospheric layer as it approaches the horizon. This strange color will fade away in an hour after moonrise as Earth’s orbiting satellite moves further from the skyline.
The “Moon Illusion” will make its disk appear larger when close to the skyline. This illusion tricks the senses to believe that it is bigger than what it is.

Harvest Moon: Why is it called that?
Harvest Moon is the name given to the full moon in September when it occurs closest to the September Equinox, which is when the sun moves from the north to the south and crosses the celestial pole. This marks the start of autumn for the Northern Hemisphere.
The Corn Moon is often used to describe the moment when summer crops are ready for harvest. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, it is also called the Turning Leaves Moon among Native American Anishinaabe.
It is also known as the Falling Leaves Moon by the Ojibwe tribe of North America’s Great Lakes and Canada, while it was named the Yellow Leaf Moon by the Assiniboine natives, who were referring to Autumnal trees that had a transformational impact.
The full moon in September coincides with China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, which dates back to the Shang Dynasty 3,000 years ago. It is a traditional time for families to reconnect and to celebrate Earth’s satellite. Mooncakes and lanterns are often lit to mark the occasion.

The full moon and other sights in the skies
It will be a stunning sight to see the Harvest Moon as it appears over the Eastern Horizon on September 27. But it is not the only astronomical target visible with the naked eye in this transitional sky between summer and autumn.
Saturn is visible about an hour after the moonrise as a bright star-like object, less than 10 degrees below the disk of the Moon. The iconic rings of Saturn surrounding the amber disk will be visible with a 6-inch telescope. Its brightest satellites Rhea Tethys Dione Titan can also be seen in the line that extends away from this jewel.
After sunset, the diamond-shaped stars of the Great Square of Pegaus that make up the Great Square of Pegaus can be seen at the left upper corner of the moon’s disk. The fainter stars are lost in the flood of moonlight around full moon.
The early risers will also be treated to an amazing view as Jupiter and Mars line up on either side of Cancer the crab, two of the planets of our solar system.
Castor and Pollux will be visible to the left of Mars. The multicolored stars in Orion and Taurus, the constellations that represent twins, will also twinkle over the Southern Horizon.

A tripod will help you keep your camera steady.
To prevent camera shake, use a shutter/timer remote.
You can use a smartphone app to find out the exact location of your local moonrise.
For landscapes, a lens with a focus length between 12 and 50 mm will be useful. A focal length at least 400mm should be used to capture more detail on the surface of the moon.
Rayleigh scattering can make the moon appear larger when it is close to horizon, next to objects in foreground. It may also take on an orangeyellow hue. As it soars above, a more classic and cleaner view is possible.

The energy was high outside Great Park, Irvine on Saturday as temperatures reached 90 degrees by noon. I especially liked the men who were standing and wearing earplugs. They all wore their most flowy babydolls and headed to Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields.
Rodrigo revealed the all-female lineup for the festival in late June as a tribute to Lilith Fair – the 1997 all-female music festival that was spearheaded by Sarah McLachlan. The excitement was evident from the start, with a lineup that included stars like Doechii and Chappell, Mitski and Bikini kill, Santigold and Garbage.
The Daisy Chain festival in Orange County was known for its unofficial dress code, which was similar to Coachella in 2016. I saw a mixture of white dresses and florals with slogans like “Women do not owe shit”, “I support the rights of women and the wrongs they face” as well as sparkles.
The festival atmosphere was mostly relaxed and joyful, thanks to the two stages. There were pink booths, water stations and flowers everywhere you turned. Upon entering the festival grounds you can stumble upon Yoko’s Wish Tree. This is one of many thoughtful activities where festivalgoers were able to write their wishes down on paper and attach them to floral trees. After reading just a few, I started to cry. It wasn’t yet 1 pm, and I didn’t want to let any more water leave my body. I moved on.
It was a scorching day. People were lining up for food, merchandise and to enjoy a moment of shade from the sun. My friends and I spent over an hour waiting in line for merch inside the VIP area before we retired into the shade because it was too hot (we ordered online, shipping cost only $11). One attendee told me that she regretted not buying the merchandise at the Lilith Fair. She said, “I attended the Lilith Fair and didn’t buy the merch. I regret this every day.” This only fueled my desire to purchase a pink baby tee for $50 to remember the weekend. The festival gave out giant reuse and recycle bags. If you fill them with aluminum cans you get free merchandise. I realized that Rodrigo, the Daisy Chain team and their planning staff had thought about every possible way that attendees could have a positive impact. The park was also kept clean.
Some attendees would rush to the different activations between the shows. There was the main Daisy Chain Reaction Village where you could gather all the pins representing each charity involved. A minute-rave set-up, carousel and giant art by Jenny Holzer were also available.
The Dandelion main stage was a popular spot all day long, thanks to the two stages. Chappell and Rodrigo played back-to-back sets in the afternoon. Even though Katseye was forced to withdraw (Megan Skiendiel had suffered an injury only a few weeks earlier), it made everyone happy that they introduced their new replacement Devon Again. Verizon Shine is the newest loyalty programme from the brand. It offers exclusive pit viewing to anyone willing to stand in line for the opportunity to see the stage. One Verizon customer also had the opportunity to tour Interscope Records, meet Olivia Rodrigo and attend the festival as a VIP. Cassidy Spencer was drinking two martinis when she found out about her win days earlier. It was around 9 pm. She told me, “My husband believed someone had died.” I immediately broke into tears. Spencer, too, wanted to acknowledge what Rodrigo is doing for Daisy Chain. She continued, “To be proud of being a fan, to see someone from your generation who is so talented and young makes you feel good.” She was very kind and I was so happy to be able to see the Palestine outfit in person.
The moments of frustration that would have been felt at a typical festival — like spending $25 on loaded fries or waiting in line for hours — were soon forgotten as you entered the 45,000-person crowd. As I munched on some chips in between Chappell, Roan and Rodrigo performances, an older woman sat down and looked at me. She asked what I had been eating. After apologizing and being worried about getting chips on her, I replied, “I am so sorry. Am I getting any on you?”. She laughed and said “nope” and I gave her some. She declined but we chatted quickly and I learned that she had come to the festival along with her sister, three nieces and one pregnant friend. I bumped into a woman earlier in the day with a bejeweled belly, who said she was 4 months pregnant. Is there a song that she’s excited to play for her child? She said “Femininomenon” because that song would be perfect for her unborn child.

Business groups told First Minister that the proposed cap on food prices by Scottish Government will not be effective.
23 organisations sent a letter together to John Swinney, who is presenting his government programme on Tuesday. They urged him to drop his proposal for a price cap for some foods and drinks.
The signatories to the agreement include representatives of Scottish retail, food production and distribution, as well as manufacturing and manufacturing businesses.
The SNP pledged in its election manifesto to force large supermarkets, such as Tesco and Asda, to reduce the price of basic items, like milk, eggs, rice, and cheese, to help lower the cost-of-living.
Swinney stated that people struggled to pay for a basic store and had “public responsibility” in providing an affordable, nutritious diet.
The joint letter stated that a statutory price cap wouldn’t address “the root causes of high food prices”, which are rising costs for production, distribution, and refrigeration.
The Scottish Retail Consortium, the Food and Drink Federation Scotland and Scottish Bakers and Dairy UK have all signed the document.
Ewan McDonald Russell, the deputy director of the SRC told Radio Scotland Breakfast on BBC that the plans are an “abhorrently horrible idea”.
He said that price caps do not address the problem of food inflation.
They are not the solution. Instead, they’re a clever gimmick. It sounds great, but just shifts costs elsewhere.
We can’t find a single instance where it has worked.
MacDonald Russell cited Hungary as an example, where, he claimed, a policy of price caps led to shortages in the stores, local products being substituted by “cheap imported” goods, and tensions between customers and retailers.
SRC also said that the policy could force small businesses, which would not be covered by proposed legislation, to become uncompetitive.
MacDonald Russell added that “Scottish food consumers enjoy the lowest prices of any western European country.”
Price caps will only make the problem worse. We know that food inflation is a serious issue, but we can deal with the situation the way it is right now.
It is making a false claim that it will be able help in some way.
In reality, the costs of both the program and the cap will be covered by the businesses.
The UK Internal Markets Act of 2020 was amended after Brexit in order to avoid trade barriers, regulatory divergence, and other issues between England, Scotland and Wales.
According to the Scottish government, helping with cost of living is a top priority.
The spokesperson continued: “Ministers welcomed the engagement of stakeholders including retailers, farmers and food producers on proposals for price control.
A consultation for additional views will be launched shortly.
John Swinney proposes a cap on food prices to show his commitment to combating the cost of living.
Those who disagree with him may appear to be on the other side.
Of course, there are many questions regarding whether or not a cap could work in reality and even if legislation would get to that point.
First, the process of making laws takes time. Swinney has himself spoken of a one-year process.
Second, it is likely that the Scottish Government would need to ask the UK government for an exemption to the Internal Market Act which is intended to harmonize the trade terms across the UK.
