After being rescued from an “altercation”, Jackie, a beloved bald eagle died in a California wildlife rehabilitation center.
In an update on Aug. 10, Ojai Raptor Center said, “We share this news with deep sadness. Patient 26-519 died in the morning hours today, after more than three week of intensive medical treatment.” Jackie had been treated at Ojai Raptor Center for nearly a month. Our team is devastated. “It has been a privilege to be able to take care of her.”
The Ojai Raptor Center reported that Jackie had died and her remains were transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
In its latest update, which was posted on August 9, the center said that she had been “critically sick” and instabile before her death.
In a Facebook post, Friends of Big Bear Valley’s Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, which runs the nest cam, expressed their sorrow at Jackie’s passing. They encouraged Jackie’s followers to “be kind to themselves, others, the FOBBV Team and those at the Ojai Raptor Center.”

What became of Big Bear Jackie?
Jackie, who was last seen on 17th July in “aggression” with subadult eagles, is the one to blame. Jackie, who was able defend herself but did not make it far, was found on the ground in Dana Point Park. She was then rescued, and transported to Ojai Raptor Center.
The center reported on 21 July that “initial bloodwork results” indicated Jackie “was experiencing severe anemia and kidney inflammation.” The vets began “supportive treatments based on information available” with the guidance of wildlife professionals worldwide.
Jackie was to undergo a series of tests and treatments over the coming weeks as veterinarians worked around-the-clock in order to determine her condition.
In its latest update regarding Jackie’s condition, Ojai Raptor Center reported that Jackie’s cell volume was below 6% in August 8 and rose to 9% by Aug. 9.
The center said that the past 24 hours had been “incredibly difficult.” It added that her condition remained “extremely severe.”
A team of nine veterinarians and representatives from the U.S. are closely evaluating her care and health. The center reported that the Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife were involved in the evaluation.
Jackie receives a ‘lifesaving’ blood transfusion
Ojai Raptor Center reported on August 3 that Jackie’s Anemia, which had previously shown small, but encouraging, signs of improvement, was now worsening. Her latest bloodwork revealed “difficult” news. Jackie’s packed-cell volume dropped from 13% to just under 12%, which means her anemia has worsened.
It said that its “veterinary staff is responding rapidly” and it is “conducting additional advanced diagnostic tests.” The hospital is continuing to “work on better understanding her condition and guiding the next steps of her treatment”.
Jackie received oxygen therapy and a blood transfusion on the 20th of July. Her illness was caused by rodenticide poisoning, which can occur when non-target animals or humans eat rat and mouse poison. However, her caregivers don’t believe this is what led to the cause.
Through extensive testing, several other causes were eliminated, including lead poisoning and cancer. The wildlife agencies said that test results showed Jackie did not suffer from lead poisoning. Lead is a deadly substance for eagles, including bald ones.
The star has been born
USA TODAY reported that Jackie, the first known adult eagle to stay in Big Bear Valley for a full winter in 2012 was her parents Ricky and Lucy. Ricky and Lucy became the first adult eagles to decide to live in Big Bear Valley. Until then, the valley was only a wintering destination.
Sandy Steers of Big Bear, also executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley lived half a kilometer from the place Jackie was born. She watched Jackie grow from afar. Steers and an employee of the U.S. Forest Service came up with the idea for a webcam. The $10,000 required to purchase and install the camera that sits at 120 feet above the forest’s floor took about two years.
Jackie was a relative unknown before the camera installed.
Steers told USA Today that “you could see her flying and you could also see [Lucy] and Ricky bringing food to her.” I stood in front of the TV for several hours each day because I was so fascinated. “That got me hooked, and I wanted to know more.”
Steers describes Jackie as being “very serious and determined”; she wants to be heard.
In 2017, Jackie fell in love for the first time when she was mated to an eagle called Mr. B. In 2018, the couple’s eggs were hatched. One of the eaglets, Stormy, died in a rainstorm after 24 hours. The other, named Mr. B, lived and left Big Bear the following summer.
Shadow, however, swooped on the scene, chased Mr. B away and won Jackie’s love. Since then, the two have been together.
What’s going on with Jackie and her family?
Friends of Big Bear Valley which runs the popular nest camera, have said that Jackie’s illness marks “a season of uncertainty” in the lives of the beloved family of eagles.
FOBBV stated on August 5. Even though Jackie, Shadow Sandy, and Luna have brought us a lot of joy.
Sandy and Luna appeared to be on the move as Jackie was receiving treatment. Last seen in the camera on July 23, they were eaglets Sandy and Luna.
FOBBV reported that Jackie’s boyfriend, Shadow, was on “his vacation this summer”. He has appeared on screen and is likely to continue doing so.
Millions of fans worry about what will happen to the power couple after they saw a young woman perched on Shadow, who is believed to be the one that attacked Jackie prior her hospitalization.
Social media users have dubbed the new eagle Jolene, after Dolly Parton’s song with the same title. Although wildlife professionals, and other people are offended by the name, she is still interested in Shadow.
Jenny Voisard said, “She is clearly gravitating toward him.” She was a spokesperson for Friends of Big Bear Valley. This group runs the nest cam that has made Jackie and Shadow so famous. Maybe something inside of her is saying, “I want to sit by this eagle.” “He’s pretty amazing.
However, experts believe that Shadow will not be able to let go of his relationship with Jackie. They have known each other for almost a decade, and they have eight eaglets together.

The Timber Fire has grown to 1,723 acres in Monterey County and remains 5% contained Monday, as evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect for areas of Big Sur.
CAL FIRE reported the fire at 1,723 acres and 5% containment in an incident update issued at 12:26 p.m. Monday. The fire had been reported at 400 acres and 5% containment Sunday night.
In an incident update provided Monday night, fire officials said crews continued working to build containment lines along the Highway 1 corridor as the Timber Fire burned at a slow rate of spread through grass, brush and oak woodland.
Officials said the fire had not moved into the treetops. Ground crews were working to access difficult terrain while aircraft dropped water and retardant on active areas.
Crews were focused on protecting nearby homes and preventing the fire from crossing Highway 1. Officials urged residents and drivers to watch for increased emergency vehicle traffic and avoid active firefighting areas.
Evacuation orders and warnings
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued an immediate evacuation order at 11 p.m. Sunday for zones MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027 and part of MRY-F028. The evacuation order includes the Ventana Inn.
“LEAVE NOW!” the sheriff’s office said in announcing the orders.
Evacuation warnings remain in effect for zone MRY-F023, MRY-F024 and part of MRY-F028.
An evacuation order means people should leave the affected area because of an immediate threat to life and property. Officials are urging residents in evacuation order zones to take their families, pets and emergency supply kits and to consider bringing essential documents and records.
People in evacuation warning zones should prepare to leave in case an evacuation order follows. Officials recommend packing a go-bag, gathering essential items and making arrangements for pets and large animals. People who need additional time or assistance to evacuate should also prepare now.

Fire grows to 1,723 acres
The Timber Fire has continued to grow rapidly since Sunday. CAL FIRE reported the fire at 180 acres earlier Sunday before it grew to 400 acres Sunday evening, doubled to 800 acres by Monday morning and reached 1,330 acres by midday.
Containment remains at 5%. The fire had previously been reported at 20% contained as of 4:29 p.m. Sunday before CAL FIRE reported containment at 5% later Sunday night. Officials have not said what prompted the change in the reported containment percentage.
The U.S. Forest Service, which is the lead agency on the fire, said the Timber Fire started around 9:38 p.m. Saturday.
The fire is burning southeast of Loma Vista in the Los Padres National Forest.
Officials reported increased fire behavior Sunday evening, including spotting, as the fire continued to burn through heavy fuels in a remote area.
“The fire is burning in steep, rugged, and difficult terrain, which continues to hamper firefighter access and suppression efforts. CAL FIRE Incident Management Team 1 has been requested to assist with management of this rapidly evolving incident,” the U.S. Forest Service said Monday morning.
Aviation resources worked extensively on the fire Sunday and were expected to continue operating as weather conditions allow.
CAL FIRE’s Monday incident update lists no structures as damaged or destroyed and no civilian or firefighter injuries or fatalities.
The cause of the Timber Fire remains under investigation.
Highway 1 open, motorists urged to avoid area
State Route 1 is open in the Big Sur area amid the Timber Fire, according to the latest update from officials.
Motorists are highly encouraged to avoid the area and follow all evacuation orders and instructions from emergency personnel.
The latest update does not clarify an earlier report that Highway 1 was closed to the public between Point Sur Lighthouse and Partington Canyon, or whether conditions have since changed.
Officials said they will continue to provide updates as conditions change.
Evacuation Resources
The County of Monterey announced on Monday that they have collaborated with the American Red Cross to open an evacuation shelter for those displaced by the Timber Fire.
The shelter will open at 7 p.m. Monday at Carmel Middle School, located at 4380 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel.
The shelter will remain open until evacuation orders associated with the Timber Fire in Big Sur are lifted and residents can safely return home.
Evacuees will have access to food, drinking water, cots, blankets and comfort kits. American Red Cross and Monterey County shelter personnel will also be available to assist.
The SPCA for Monterey County will be stationed at the shelter to provide a dedicated area and assistance for evacuees with pets.
Residents evacuating with animals are encouraged to bring their pets, along with pet food, medications, leashes, carriers and other essential supplies when possible.
“Our priority is to make sure people affected by the Timber Fire have a safe place to go and the support they need while evacuation orders remain in effect,” Monterey County Communications Director Nick Pasculli said.
The County of Monterey also announced that it is establishing a Temporary Evacuation Point in Big Sur to assist residents under evacuation orders.
The evacuation point will be located at the Big Sur Station Multi-Agency Facility. It will be open through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. or until the evacuation orders are lifted.
Comfort kits, water and snacks will be provided on-site by the American Red Cross.
“The TEP provides a designated location for evacuees to temporarily gather, receive incident information and resource referrals, and coordinate next steps as conditions evolve. Residents in Evacuation Order Areas can request sheltering resources at the TEP in person,” the county said.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of an US-backed Gaza deal prompted skepticism in Israel amid reports that he had personally worked out the details of a military pilot withdrawal a few days before.
Israeli Prime Minister is currently struggling to find a balance between the incompatible demands of his domestic and international key allies regarding Gaza policy.
Israeli far-right politicians, who support Netanyahu’s coalition Government, want Israel to intensify its attacks against Gaza and settle the territory.
Donald Trump who is Israel’s most important diplomatic and military ally, would like to see a return of Palestinian control over Gaza and a settlement that will last. This can be achieved through the Board of Peace, which he has created and chaired.
Netanyahu has chosen to placate his domestic allies who have already started campaigning for the Israeli elections in less than two months.
He rejected on Sunday a 15-point Gaza plan that included Hamas’s promise to lay down its arms, thus meeting an Israeli requirement. He also refused to give in to US demands that Israel be included as a party for the end of wars with Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported that the remarks were a surprise to Israeli commanders, who just a few days before had discussed the implementation of the Plan in meetings with Netanyahu, and Eyal Zmir, the Israeli Chief of Staff.
The station quoted an official from the defence as saying, “We heard about it in the media today.” The prime minister gave his personal consent at the previous meetings to the plan, and to the withdrawal of the Rafah points.
Report said that the meetings focused on the exact boundaries of the three pilot zones in Gaza’s southern region where an international force, which is yet to be established, could replace the Israeli army, as well as the interface between both forces.
Netanyhu’s attack on the Board of Peace Plan seemed to be a direct rejection of US objectives because it came so soon after an alleged visit from Adm Brad Cooper who is in charge of US Central Command.
Israeli media said he came personally to convey the message from the Trump Administration that it wants Israel to stop its wars with Gaza and Lebanon. The Americans told the IDF to shut down the three theaters, a senior Israeli officer said to Channel 13 Television.
It is dangerous to ignore Trump’s thin skin and intolerance of dissension, especially when Israel needs US supplies and is isolated internationally.
Netanyahu is a man of many talents, and he has demonstrated a history of bold political maneuvering, at home as well as abroad, despite apparent power imbalances. Bill Clinton is said to have asked him, in 1996 after their first meeting, “Who the hell are you?”
Netanyahu rejected the plan that Joe Biden announced in May 2024.
The administration in Washington has, for the moment, largely dismissed Netanyahu’s remarks as electioneering. Perhaps this is due to military decisions which show a greater respect for Trump’s desires.
Netanyahu lowered the level of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza last week by increasing the authorization threshold. The chief of the staff must approve targeted killings, not the commander in the region, unless Israeli troops are “imminently threatened”.
It is not the first time that he has given in to US demands to limit wars in which his right-wing allies are enthusiastically involved. He recently limited the offensive in Lebanon and ordered fighter jets headed for Iran to return at Trump’s request last year.
Netanyahu may have gained some time with his combination of fierce rhetoric at home and some conciliatory measures on the ground, but US patience could not last past polling day late in October.
Trump has his own concerns about the midterm elections in the US, which are held just one week after Israel’s.
Haaretz noted that Netanyahu’s White House visit last month was notable for its low-profile, especially considering his campaigning on the basis of his international reputation and relationship with US President Barack Obama.
The meeting ended without any joint statement. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the Israeli Prime Minister’s conflicting political priorities are causing tensions. The paper stated that “that’s what happens when you try to juggle a lot of balls: you drop them.”
Nickolay Melanov, the top representative for the Board of Peace declined to make any comments on Netanyahu’s refusal of a peace deal which took many months to negotiate. He said in an interview to Israeli media that the “discussions” continue.
Palestinians have been in Gaza for nearly a full year, after Trump brokered an ill-defined ceasefire that was supposed to stop the fighting and allow reconstruction.
Israel continues to attack, killing more than 1,200 people. It has also blocked entry for equipment, fuel, and supplies needed to rebuild homes, schools, and medical infrastructure.
Food security experts warn that the majority of Gaza’s remaining population lives in tents with poor sanitation. Although hunger is lessened, there are food shortages everywhere. Over 70,000 children will need to be treated for acute malnutrition by April 2027.
Netanyahu’s Office denied reports that Netanyahu had discussed withdrawal plans in Gaza.

Trump’s administration has announced that it is taking the first steps to strengthen rules on ingredients which food manufacturers have added for years with little oversight.
According to a proposal rule that was announced on Monday, manufacturers must notify the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when they consider additives “generally acknowledged as safe,” or GRAS. They will also have to provide information about existing additives.
Critics say, however, that while it is an important first step, this proposed rule will not prevent food manufacturers from adding more ingredients, nor remove the thousands of additives currently in the foods.
GRAS was created in 1950 to make it easier for people to use common ingredients such as paprika and garlic. It also aimed at reducing the FDA’s resources by avoiding a long approval process. The FDA is not required to be informed when companies decide what ingredients they think are GRAS.
Critics have argued for years that the food industry exploited this rule in order to add thousands of chemicals untested into the food supply. This could be dangerous to public health.
The FDA banned some ingredients after proving that they could harm your health. Red No. is one of them. Red No.
During a Monday media event with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Health Secretary, Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian of Tufts University’s Food Is Medicine Institute said: “Overtime, this exemption has turned into a loophole. The vast majority of substances were submitted through that loophole, without any public disclosure of information or safety.”
Companies would be required to inform the FDA if they determine substances GRAS. These notices will be public. The proposed rule will ask that companies submit information about the use of substances with GRAS status.
Alyssa Muran, deputy Director of the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy of the University of Pennsylvania said that the new rule doesn’t prevent companies from self certifying their ingredient safety. It does require mandatory notifications, but I understand that the FDA is not given a deadline for notification. Companies can then introduce their ingredients, and eventually notify FDA.
Moran said that it was misleading for the government to claim they would close the GRAS (generally accepted as safe) loophole while still allowing companies to self affirm the safety of the ingredients in their products.
Jennifer Pomeranz is an associate professor of global public health at New York University School of Global Public Health. She said that the rule proposal was “a very important step”, but added that more work needs to be done.
Pomeranz asked: “What information will be needed to submit about ingredients that are already present in food supplies?” It must be sufficient for us to determine that the food is safe. The name and use of the ingredient is not enough.
Stephanie Harris, Chief Public Policy Officer for the Food Industry Association (which represents grocery stores and other food providers), said the GRAS proposal was “an important first step”, but showed the limits to what the FDA could do legally in order to implement such reforms.
Harris stated in a press release that Congress should take action this year to create a national uniform science-based framework of ingredient transparency. This will strengthen FDA’s position, prevent a patchwork state-by-state approach, and provide clarity and confidence for consumers as well as the food industry.
Kennedy announced during the event that a definition of ultraprocessed food recognized by the federal government is under “final revision”; however, he did not reveal the exact text. The spokesperson from the Department of Health and Human Services didn’t give an exact date for its release.

According to text messages taken from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s government-issued phone, he privately raised concerns in January 2021 about COVID-19 for pregnant women, such as questions regarding fever following a second dosage and the theoretical risk of miscarriage occurring during the first three months.
Fauci was involved in the exchange with Dr. Vivek Muthy and then Director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Rochelle Walensky, later to become Joe Biden’s Surgeon General.
Fauci stated that because many women experience significant cytokine related symptoms and fever following a second dosage, this reaction could “theoretically be associated with miscarriage during the first trimester,” as shown in messages on the page 2 of documents released by Senators. Ron Johnson, R.-Wis. and Rand Paul.
Johnson said in a press release that “the text chain could have an immediate effect [on] the public health as well as on informed consent.”

In the release, it was questioned as to why, out of 34,000 texts and 522 voicemails, only three people were identified by their names, but all others are only identified with numbers.
The release stated that it is still too early to tell if any data have been lost.

Murthy asked if there were any reasons to recommend vaccinations earlier in pregnancy or later and if officials had observed adverse effects among women who have already received a vaccine.
Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that “there are no data or theories” supporting the belief that vaccinations earlier in pregnancy would be preferable to vaccinations later. The mRNA vaccination could not alter the genes of a human being, he said.
Fauci, on the other hand, mentioned later that night the problems with a second dose for women who are pregnant.

Walensky responded that this was “definitely an excellent point, especially after the second dose.” Murthy wrote that Fauci was right about the cytokine reaction after the second dosage.
Fauci said that the next day, following Murthy’s warning about a World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation at the moment advising against using Moderna’s vaccine among pregnant women due to limited data, officials must weigh potential risks associated with vaccination against COVID-19’s risks.
The author wrote that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices(ACIP) and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines allowed women to opt for vaccination and animal toxicology tests had not shown any red flags.
