Why Are More Young Women Developing Heart Disease?

Young women are increasingly at risk of developing heart disease and dying as a result.
According to recent research, nearly one third of women aged 20-44 will suffer from heart disease by 2050. This is up from one fourth today. Women under the age of 55 have a higher risk to die due to heart attacks.
Dr. Emily Lau is the co-director for Mass General Brigham Women’s Heart Health Program. It is still possible to reduce the risk.
Attention to traditional risk factors
The increase of heart disease among younger women can be attributed to the fact that obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure are more common in young people.
Research has found that while these risk factors are applicable to all, some of them have an increased effect on women. Women with diabetes are at a greater risk for heart disease than men. Smoking also raises women’s risks more than they do men.
Young women who have high blood pressure often go undiagnosed or undertreated. According to Dr. C. Noel Bairey Merz of Cedars-Sinai’s Barbra Streisand Heart Center, heart disease risks may start increasing at lower levels for women.
It is important to regularly check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as weight, hemoglobin, or A1C, (which measures average blood sugar). All doctors recommend that adults aim for the following levels:
Blood pressure under 120 mm Hg / 80 mm Hg
Low density lipoprotein (LDL) under 100 mg/dL
Body mass index below 25
Hemoglobin A1C 5.6 or less
Priya Freaney is the director of Northwestern Medicine’s Women’s Heart Care Program. She said, “Knowing what your numbers are can be your greatest tool.” It’s never too late to get started.

Measles exposure reported at Universal Studios Hollywood

Los Angeles County officials confirmed that a measles-infected person visited Universal Studios Hollywood in the last month, and could have exposed other people to this virus.
Department of Public Health of the county said on Wednesday it was investigating the incident involving a visitor to the theme park who visited the place on 27 July. According to the Health Department, other possible locations in the county are under investigation.
Health officials warn that anyone who visited the park between the hours of 10 am and 9 pm that day is required to prove their immunity to the virus. They are also asked to confirm that the vaccine is still effective.
Officials from the Department of Health said people who are vaccinated or who previously had measles are more likely to be immune.
Unimmunized people or those with unknown immunization status for measles are more at risk. They should be closely monitored and keep an eye out for any symptoms. The health department stated that anyone who is symptom free for 21 days or more after exposure, no longer poses a risk.
In a Friday statement, a spokesperson from Universal Studios Hollywood stated that they are working closely with the Health Department in the investigation.
The company stated that “the safety and security our team and guests is our top priority.”
The symptoms of measles include fever, coughing, a runny or red nose, and a rash. The virus is spread by airborne transmission and may remain on surfaces or in the air for 2 hours even after the infected individual leaves the area.
According to the Health Department, anyone who suspects they may have measles should call their doctor right away.
In a recent statement, Dr. Muntu Davi, Los Angeles County’s Health Officer said that measles is easily spread and could lead to complications such as pneumonia, swelling of the brain, or even death.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 2,300 cases of measles have been reported this year. This is the highest number recorded since 1991.
According to the CDC, most measles outbreaks in 2026 will be among teenagers and children aged between 19 and 30. One in 10 measles cases diagnosed this year among children younger than five years old was hospitalized.
CDC statistics show that 93% of the cases in this year were among those who had not been vaccinated, or whose status was unknown.
CDC recommends two doses for MMR vaccination. The first should be given between 12 and 15 months of age, and the second at 4 to 6 years. The CDC states that one dose of the MMR vaccine is 93% efficient, while two doses provide 97% effectiveness against measles.
Mary Kekatos, ABC News contributed to the report.

Fourth case of rabbit fever confirmed on Long Island, health officials warn

LONG ISLAND (N.Y.) — The number of rabbit fever cases is on the increase. A fourth case has been confirmed in Suffolk County. Health officials are urging the public to be aware and to take precautions.
Tularemia is also known as rabbit flu and it’s caused by a highly contagious bacterium Francisella Tularensis.
NEW YORK STATE CONFIRMS FIRST CASE of RARE, POSITIVELY FATAL TICKBORNE VIRUS
Ticks and deer fly often pick up this bacteria, which can then be transmitted to humans.
The illness is not contagious.
The county health officials have identified ticks as the cause of one local infection, but they did not disclose how the patients who were infected got the disease.
MICHIGAN REPORTS TWO DEATHS IN RELATION TO THE DIARRHEA CAUSING PARASITE WHICH IS TROUBLING THE US
The latest report follows earlier reports this summer that included a child of 9 years old who became ill following a tick bite.
Although the disease is relatively rare, officials from county health departments have been tracking a few cases each year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that “tularemia is a life-threatening disease, but antibiotics can treat most infections successfully.”
Though symptoms can vary depending on how the infection was contracted, some common ones include high fevers of up to 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, skin ulcers and swollen nodes.
RHODE ISLAND RAISES RISK OF WEST NILE VIRUS AS MOSQUITOES TEST POSITIVE
According to local media, for example, a child had swollen nodes of the lymphatic system and suffered from fever lasting about 11 days.
According to the CDC, infections are most common between May and September. Around 200 to 300 U.S. cases per year have been reported.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Flesh-Eating Parasite in America as cases triple.
Treatment and prevention of rabbit fever
The CDC offers several ways to prevent tularemia.
Use insect repellent.
Protective clothing, such as long sleeves and pants or trousers, can help prevent ticks from attaching.
If you have attached ticks, remove them immediately.
Avoid mowing dead animals when doing yardwork.
Drink only treated surface water.
Watch out for these common symptoms.
When hunting, always wear gloves to handle sick or dead animals.

FDA approves Moderna’s mRNA flu vaccine after initial pushback

Moderna announced on Wednesday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had approved its new mRNA-based seasonal influenza vaccine.
It is called mFLUSIVA and it’s approved for older adults. This is the first flu vaccine to be approved by FDA using mRNA-based technology.
Moderna stated that the approval was “a reflection of the potential for our mRNA technology to address public health issues through scientific innovation.” We are thankful to all the participants in clinical trials, researchers, regulators, and Moderna team members who made this milestone possible.
FDA, which is part of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), has approved the mRNA vaccine despite the criticisms of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of HHS, who cancelled 22 projects using mRNA technologies last year.
Celine Gounder is a CBS News medical reporter and editor-at large for KFF Health News. She explained Thursday on CBS Mornings that the majority of flu vaccines still are grown in chicken egg, which requires more time to make. But because mRNA can be made much faster, “you are able to update the vaccine more effectively.”
She said: “To give you a perspective, let’s say that if a pandemic struck tomorrow and you used the egg-based tech, it would be 18 months before you could produce enough vaccine to protect a quarter the population of the planet.” With an mRNA-based vaccine, it would be much quicker.
The FDA said earlier in the year that it wouldn’t consider Moderna’s application. The FDA reversed its decision a few days later, stating that it will allow Moderna’s application to be reviewed after the discussions it had with Moderna led to “a revised regulatory strategy and a modified application which FDA accepted.”
In the dispute, a clinical trial involving 40,000 people found that Moderna’s flu vaccine is more effective for adults 50 years and older than a standard shot. Vinay Pradosh, FDA’s vaccine director, criticized Moderna in a letter refusing to file the application because it did not include a brand that was specifically for older people.
Moderna revised its request to obtain full approval of the vaccine for adults 50-64 years old and to accelerate approval for those 65 and older. Drugmaker agreed to do an extra study on the use of drug by older adults.
Gounder stated that side effects to be mindful of include fatigue, headaches, and pain at the injection site. Moderna also noted that the effectiveness of the flu vaccine was higher in these trials than with standard vaccines.
Moderna expects mFLUSIVA to be available in 2026-2027 for flu season.

2nd person dies in Florida from ‘flesh-eating’ bacteria found in oysters and swimming water: How to reduce your risk of a Vibrio vulnificus infection

Florida’s health officials confirmed Thursday that another person died from Vibrio. Second death reported by Marion County and first reported by Palm Beach County. This is the second U.S. death.
According to Florida’s state health department, 14 more cases have been confirmed. Six cases have also been confirmed in Alabama and Connecticut in February.
The findings come after Stony Brook University released new research last April that found some bays off Long Island in New York have the perfect conditions for Vibrio to flourish.
According to Cleveland Clinic, Vibrio cases are rare. Between 100 and 200 infections occur in the U.S. every year. Many people who have an infection become very sick, and may need intensive care, or even amputation of a limb. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “About one in five people who have this infection will die within days or weeks of getting sick.”
Vibrio infections caused by another Vibrio strain are more frequent, with around 80,000 vibriosis cases per year.
Is this a reason to avoid oceans? What you need to know about ocean safety and precautions:
What is Vibrio vulnificus?
Vibrio, a bacteria type that is found in coastal warm waters from May through October, thrives. Salt water is included, as well as brackish or mixed water, often where rivers and oceans meet. These bacteria can be found in particular along Gulf Coast states such as Florida, Louisiana Texas Alabama and Mississippi.
Vibrio can cause different infections. Vibrio can be dangerous, as it can lead to severe infections that can have life-threatening consequences. The bacteria that causes this type of infection is called “flesh eating” as it destroys muscle and skin tissue. The CDC states that “many patients with [Vibrio] vulnificus infection need intensive care, or may require surgical tissue removal.”
What causes people to become infected with HIV?
Two ways are available for people to become infected.
A person’s open wound can be contaminated by Vibrio bacteria if it is exposed to ocean or seawater. Small cuts, scrapes, or open wounds from recent surgeries, tattoos, or piercings can let bacteria into the body. It can occur when someone goes fishing, swimming, or prepares seafood that is raw.
If you ingest contaminated swimming water or seafood that is undercooked or raw. Vibrio bacteria can be concentrated in oysters.
What are the signs and symptoms of an ‘Vibrio infection’?
According to the CDC, these are some of the most common symptoms and signs associated with a Vibrio infections:
Watery diarrhea
Stomach cramps
Nausea and vomiting
Fever/chills
Vibrio infection symptoms:
Fever/chills
Low blood pressure is dangerous
Blistering skin lesions
Vibrio infection symptoms:

Cleveland Clinic and CDC recommend that people go immediately to an emergency room if they suspect a Vibrio vulnificus.
Some people are more susceptible to infection than others?
A wound can infect anyone with this bacteria. According to the CDC, people with underlying conditions such as liver disease, diabetes, and immune-compromising conditions have a higher risk of wound infection.
What can you do to stay safe?
Florida’s Health Department and the CDC offer some tips on how to prevent Vibrio vulnificus infection:

Brevard adds 2 leprosy cases as Florida total climbs to 19

Brevard County reported two new cases of leprosy, adding to the growing list of Hansen’s Disease diagnoses which again places Florida at the top of national lists.
In its most recent report, the Florida Department of Health confirmed that two more Hansen’s cases had been reported in Brevard County. This brings Florida’s total Hansen’s diseases this year up to 19 and three in Brevard County.
In the last year, Florida was responsible for over 20% of leprosy cases in the United States. By this point, 20 cases had been reported. In 2025, the state recorded 36 leprosy cases, an increase from 20 in 2010.
Health data indicate that the victims are between the ages of 70-74 and 80-84.
Residents are left with new questions about the disease, who’s at risk and how it spreads. They also have to consider what they should do when symptoms appear. Florida, Louisiana and Texas are among the states that have been affected by this disease. Ohio reported two cases by August 5.
Studies have pointed to the common Florida resident, the nine-banded armadillo.
Where in Florida has Hansen’s Disease (leprosy), also known as Hansen’s Syndrome, been reported?
As of August 1, the Florida Department of Health:
Brevard County: 2 (+2)
Charlotte County: 2
Duval County: 1
Highlands County: 1
Lake County, 1
Lee County, 1
Manatee county:
Miami-Dade County: 2
Okeechobee County :
Orange County, 1
Seminole County, Florida:
St. Johns County :
Sumter County, 1
Volusia county:
FDOH’s data indicates that one of the three cases acquired was outside the United States. Six of the six cases are unknown.
What is Hansen disease?
Hansen’s Disease is a bacterial infection that has been described thousands of years ago in ancient texts. It can affect skin, the nerves and eyes, and the lining of your nose.
Untreated leprosy may cause nerve damage and other complications, including paralysis, and shortening or shortened toes, fingers and toes, non-healing chronic ulcers, eye and nose deformities, and blindness.
The disease isn’t easily spread because most people are immune to it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 95% (or 95%) of humans do not have a susceptibility to the bacteria that cause the illness.
In the United States, and Florida in particular, it is still rare. Only a handful of cases per year are reported nationwide; Florida had 36 cases by 2025, which represented just under 20% of the total 174 reported cases across the United States.
Public health officials claim that although it was once considered a contagious illness, the disease is now difficult to spread. It can be easily cured with antibiotics taken for one or two years.
Hansen’s can be difficult for doctors to diagnose and the symptoms may not appear until 20 years later. The number of Hansen’s cases has been increasing in Florida. From 1992, when the FDOH first reported cases to 2014 the average was six cases per year. There were 29 cases in 2015 and since then, the average number of Hansen’s disease cases has been over 21 per year.
What are symptoms of leprosy and Hansen’s Disease?
Hansen’s begins as a subtle change in skin or nerves. Early signs of Hansen’s disease include:
Skin patches that feel cold or numb and are darker or lighter than the surrounding skin.
Sometimes tingling is accompanied by loss of feeling in hands, feet, or other parts.
Fine motor skills or muscle weakness
Nerves that are thickened, particularly around the elbows and knees
These symptoms are often overlooked because they can be slow to develop and may look like other illnesses.
The doctors say that anyone experiencing persistent numbness, loss of feeling or weakness, should consult a doctor and discuss Hansen’s Disease. This is especially true if you have been in close contact for a long time with someone who has the condition or travelled to an area where it occurs more frequently, like certain areas of Asia, Africa or Latin America.
Do armadillos spread leprosy?
The bacteria responsible for Hansen’s Disease is only found in armadillos. The New England Journal of Medicine published an article in 2011 that officially linked the animal to leprosy.
According to the Emerging Pathogens Institute of the University of Florida’s, the number of cases correlates with an animal’s range. It has also been reported that humans could be affected by soil contaminated with armadillos.
Leprosy cannot be spread by casual contact. A victim must have been exposed to bacteria for a prolonged period of time, either through soil or armadillos. It can also come from a person with untreated leprosy. According to leprosymission.org, many U.S. patients contracted the disease in another country where it is still prevalent.
