Bank of America launches $250B initiative to finance US infrastructure

Bank of America (BofA) is launching a $250 billion initiative to finance a broad buildout of U.S. infrastructure, including data centers, semiconductor facilities, power generation and transportation projects.
The banking giant announced Wednesday that its Critical Infrastructure Finance Initiative will mobilize and deploy $250 billion through lending, investments, capital markets and advisory transactions over an 18-month period ending July 4, 2027.
The effort comes as growing demand for computing power, electricity, manufacturing capacity and diversified supply chains drives infrastructure investment across the U.S. BofA said the initiative will focus on projects that strengthen energy security, technological leadership and long-term economic growth.

“We are proud of our long history supporting the American economy. As America marks its 250th year, this initiative reflects our confidence in the country’s future and the investments that will shape it,” said BofA Co-President Jim DeMare. “The infrastructure that powers our economy, strengthens our energy security and secures our technological leadership will drive growth, create jobs and define America’s next chapter.”
The initiative will target three broad areas: digital infrastructure, energy and power infrastructure, and core infrastructure.
Digital projects can include data centers, computing hardware, chips, telecommunications and semiconductors. Energy investments can include conventional and renewable power generation, energy storage and distribution systems, while core infrastructure can include transportation, electric and energy transmission, grid optimization, water systems, critical minerals and mining.

Bank of America said investments supported by the initiative could help create tens of thousands of jobs across construction, manufacturing, technology and infrastructure operations.
The bank also pointed to its workforce-development efforts. In 2025, Bank of America invested nearly $40 million in more than 730 workforce-development partners across 97 U.S. markets. Those organizations estimate the funding helped connect more than 90,000 people with employment opportunities and provided more than 290,000 people with access to training, education and career-readiness programs.

The Trump administration claims oil is flowing normally again. There’s just one problem

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Tuesday that oil exports from the Middle East rose above pre-war levels on Sunday and have been right around normal for a week — a highly dubious claim that does not appear to be backed up by observable shipping traffic.
Wright said in a post on X that the oil flows were restored to normal levels after the US military coordinated a plan with allied Gulf nations to get crude through the Strait of Hormuz and Middle Eastern countries bypassed the waterway via pipelines or other export facilities.
It’s not clear how Wright arrived at that conclusion. Just 84 total vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz last week — including only nine on Sunday, according to Kpler, an oil market data service that uses satellite imagery and shipping transponders to provide up-to-date crude flow information. That’s down from more than 100 transits a day before the war and not nearly enough to carry the 9 million barrels per day through the strait that Wright claims has been traveling through the waterway.
Oil is getting out of the strait – but the number is closer to 4 million barrels per day, according to JPMorgan.
“It is not possible to reconcile the disparity between what we see and what he is quoting,” said Matt Smith, director of commodity research at Kpler.
The Department of Energy did not respond to a request for comment.
Wright’s claim that 5 to 7 million barrels per day are bypassing the Strait of Hormuz via pipelines appears to be accurate. Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline alone has rerouted upward of 5 million barrels of oil per day to the Red Sea. Despite threats of a blockade of the Red Sea’s Bab-al-Mandeb strait from Iran’s Houthi allies, ship traffic has been flowing at a close-to-normal clip through that waterway in recent weeks.
Wright has claimed that 15 million barrels per day left the Arabian Gulf region over the past week and that 20 million barrels of oil left on Sunday, which would be higher than the pre-war average.
Middle Eastern countries have maxed out their pipeline capacity to reroute as much oil as possible around the Strait of Hormuz. So it’s hard to reconcile Wright’s bold claims with the physical limitations of the region’s infrastructure and the observable ship traffic through the Gulf’s waterways.
On Monday, a total of 6 vessels transited the strait: 4 inbound and 2 outbound, noted Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates. None of those ships were crude oil tankers.
Jawboning prices lower
“In theory, the US government with all its technology and all the military assets they have in the region should have the best number on the flow through the strait,” said Dan Pickering, founder and chief investment officer at Pickering Energy Partners. “But this is hard to verify. The administration is really trying to jawbone oil prices to the downside, as they have been doing for months.”
Wright’s dubious claims follow numerous attempts from the Trump administration to spin the oil market in a positive light.
President Donald Trump has routinely claimed that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz, a claim belied by the notion that military escorts are needed to shuttle commercial vessels in and out of the Persian Gulf and Iran has attacked 64 vessels transiting the strait, resulting in 17 seafarer fatalities and 35 injuries.
“We are nowhere near normal, but they have had six months of success selling this market narrative,” said Helima Croft, head of global commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets.
Although the market has adapted and prices have remained relatively low considering the historic supply shock during the war, that’s in large part because demand for oil collapsed and China drew down its massive oil stockpiles.
Traffic through the strait has ebbed and flowed. One day, weekend or week where traffic returns to normal is unsustainable if it takes a coordinated military effort to achieve. Ships need to keep coming back into the strait to pick up oil and ship it out, and they have been reluctant to navigate the waterways while they’re under threat of attack.
And a non-trivial amount of oil coming out of the Middle East is either on shadow tankers that are turning off their transponders or on vessels that are sailing under false flags to mask the fact that they are carrying sanctioned Iranian oil, according to Windward Intelligence, a shipping data service.
Of the 84 vessels that passed through the Strait of Hormuz last week, 17 were shadow fleet crossings and 10 were carrying sanctioned cargo. It’s not clear whether Wright was counting those in his calculations.

Toyota recalls more than 508,000 Camry Hybrids in the US over display defect

Toyota announced a global recall of about 655,000 Camrys due to a display problem that could deactivate certain safety features, such as turn signal and hazard light.
Global recall of vehicles manufactured between December 2023 – July 2026 in U.S.A., Japan and Thailand.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects 508,354 Camry hybrids from model years 2025-2026 in the U.S.
ABOUT 50,000 CHRYSLER VEHICLES ARE RECALLED DUE TO A SAFETY DEFECT IN THE SEAT BELTS
A 7-inch combination display meter may not be functional at first startup. The smaller display is only available on the LE trim, SE trim and Nightshade. XLE, XSE and Nightshade trims have a 12.3-inch display for the driver. These models are therefore not affected.
A defect may cause turn signals, warning lights, and buzzers to be disabled, including those that remind you to remove your key and fasten your seatbelt.
The automaker stated that the 7-inch combo meter could become blank upon startup. This can deactivate turn signals and hazard lights, as well as certain buzzers (such the the smart key and driver/passenger belt reminder). The vehicle may not meet federal safety standards.
Regulators warn that some older Ford vehicles pose ‘unreasonable’ safety risks.
The statement said that “if certain information required by the vehicle combination meter is not displayed, the hazard/turn signal lamps are not working, or certain alarm buzzers don’t activate, then there may be an increase in injury risk or crash, depending on the situation.”
NHTSA says that display problems can increase crash risk for drivers, who are unable to detect telltale indicators. Other road users will not be aware of the intention to turn the vehicle or to indicate a hazard.

DEF CON crowd suspected in fake-hotspot attack on Delta flight

The federal authorities were alerted to the fact that passengers on Delta Flight 591 from Las Vegas, Nevada, heading for Atlanta, Georgia, allegedly used the Wi-Fi system aboard the plane.
ACARS, or air-to ground messages that are publicly accessible, were the first to report this incident, which occurred one day after DEF CON, a security conference in Las Vegas.
The “ACARS Drama’ account states that a pilot sent a message from the plane stating: “NO INFO AT THIS TIME WE HAVE A BUNCH of PAX WHO WERE ATTENDING A CYBERCONFERENCE IN LAS. THEY WERE ABLE to jam our WIFI and broadcast THEIR SIGNAL.”
Reddit’s description stated further that the passengers had created a fake hotspot (Delta WiFi Fast) with a landing page phishing “designed to collect passengers’ credentials.”
The IT security community has long been aware of this technique. This attack involves creating a fake WiFi network, and then collecting login credentials and data.
Morgan Durrant confirmed to Ars the specifics.
Durrant, via email, told Ars that an unauthorised WiFi network was on board the plane for a brief period of time.
Delta also noted that “the safety of the flight was never in doubt and none of the aircraft’s operating systems was affected” and that there was no declared emergency.
For 30 minutes, the actual Wi-Fi onboard was turned off.
All inquiries were referred to the FBI by Atlanta’s Police Department. Atlanta’s FBI Bureau told Ars it was looking into this matter.
The officials noted that there were no arrests and FBI agents didn’t meet the plane at the airport.
Tony Thomas, a FBI Atlanta spokesperson, emailed Ars a press release stating that “FBI Atlanta has been made aware of the reports pertaining to a possible Wi-Fi related incident involving Delta Flight 591. We are in touch with local partners and corporations on this issue. “We have no further information at this time.”
