DEF CON crowd suspected in fake-hotspot attack on Delta flight

The federal authorities were alerted to the fact that passengers on Delta Flight 591 from Las Vegas, Nevada, heading for Atlanta, Georgia, allegedly used the Wi-Fi system aboard the plane.
ACARS, or air-to ground messages that are publicly accessible, were the first to report this incident, which occurred one day after DEF CON, a security conference in Las Vegas.
The “ACARS Drama’ account states that a pilot sent a message from the plane stating: “NO INFO AT THIS TIME WE HAVE A BUNCH of PAX WHO WERE ATTENDING A CYBERCONFERENCE IN LAS. THEY WERE ABLE to jam our WIFI and broadcast THEIR SIGNAL.”
Reddit’s description stated further that the passengers had created a fake hotspot (Delta WiFi Fast) with a landing page phishing “designed to collect passengers’ credentials.”
The IT security community has long been aware of this technique. This attack involves creating a fake WiFi network, and then collecting login credentials and data.
Morgan Durrant confirmed to Ars the specifics.
Durrant, via email, told Ars that an unauthorised WiFi network was on board the plane for a brief period of time.
Delta also noted that “the safety of the flight was never in doubt and none of the aircraft’s operating systems was affected” and that there was no declared emergency.
For 30 minutes, the actual Wi-Fi onboard was turned off.
All inquiries were referred to the FBI by Atlanta’s Police Department. Atlanta’s FBI Bureau told Ars it was looking into this matter.
The officials noted that there were no arrests and FBI agents didn’t meet the plane at the airport.
Tony Thomas, a FBI Atlanta spokesperson, emailed Ars a press release stating that “FBI Atlanta has been made aware of the reports pertaining to a possible Wi-Fi related incident involving Delta Flight 591. We are in touch with local partners and corporations on this issue. “We have no further information at this time.”

Iran targets tankers in ‘unprovoked attacks’ in Strait of Hormuz, UAE says

U.S. Central Command pushed back against reports on conditions aboard USS Abraham Lincoln while it was deployed to the Middle East. The command denied claims of sailors dying in a fight or that there had been a surge in suicidal thoughts on the ship.
CENTCOM issued a press release titled “CLAIM” in which it stated that multiple media outlets had reported false information about the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72) to the Middle East. One report claimed seven Sailors were killed in a fight aboard the aircraft carrier, and other reports have suggested that suicidal thoughts are on the rise.
CENTCOM stated that “These are false reports.”
It cited the USS Abraham Lincoln’s high crew retention rate (84.4%) among all U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. Navy.”
The Sailors and Marines in the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group are resilient and determined after more than 260 day at sea, 10.000 aircraft flights and 1.5 millions pounds of explosives expended, CENTCOM stated.
The statement went on to say that “At no time have any servicemen or women died aboard the aircraft carriers, nor has a Sailor fallen overboard. He was safely and quickly recovered.” The widespread misreporting of Abraham Lincoln’s historical deployment does a great disservice to those who serve in uniform as well as their families.
Hegseth said that reports on Thursday about the conditions aboard an aircraft carrier were “completely misrepresented”.
Hegseth, during his visit to Panama, told journalists that they ensured every vessel, crew and captain had everything available at all times. “Some deployments last longer than others and I am more grateful and respectful of those sailors. It’s amazing what they accomplish in the high seas, under such austere circumstances and with fewer port visits.
Fox News Digital’s live blog from yesterday offers more coverage on the Iran conflict.
On Thursday, the United Arab Emirates said that Iran had attacked two of their vessels while they were transiting through the Strait of Hormuz. It blasted Tehran for its “flagrant maritime violations”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the two ships were associated with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, a state owned energy company which is one of the biggest oil producers on the planet.
According to the Ministry, “the vessels were attacked in unprovoked attacks”. There were no reported injuries.
In citing Resolution 2817 of the U.N. Security Council, the Ministry described the attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as pirate acts. In a resolution adopted in March 2013, the Security Council demanded Iran to stop its attacks on Arab Gulf countries and shipping routes.
The agency stated that “the Ministry stressed that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps is committing acts of piratery by targeting commercial ships and using the Strait of Hormuz to blackmail or coerce economics. This represents a direct danger to the stability of this region, the people of it, and the global energy security.”
UAE officials also urged Iran’s commitment to a complete, unconditional and reopening of Strait of Hormuz. They called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Trump Accounts tax benefits are lacking, Ramsey expert cautions

George Kamel, a Ramsey Solutions expert in personal finance and financial planning, didn’t hesitate when the federal government started depositing $1,000 into the newly created Trump Accounts of eligible children.
Kamel, who was happy to receive “a little bit of money” back from Uncle Sam in the form of a tax refund, warned parents all over America that the fine print on the program could be costly and warns them about this.
As someone with a 3-year-old as well as a 1-year old, I made the most of it. On the 4th of July the $1,000 was deposited into my son’s account, and I said, “Woo!” Kamel said to Fox News Digital, “I’m getting a little back from my government after giving so much.
He continued, “If you understand the power compound growth then this Trump Account is worth it to just get your brain thinking about it.” The truth is that the tax advantages aren’t great.
Why Ramsey Financial Expert Says There’s No Magic Age to Claim Social Security
This initiative will be rolled out as part of Trump Accounts in 2026. It is a new provision in tax law that provides $1,000 for every newborn U.S. Citizen whose parents sign up the child. Parents can invest up to $5,000 annually in an eligible U.S. index fund.
In a public Cabinet meeting on July 31, President Donald Trump announced that over 7 million Trump Accounts have been created since the launch of the program.
Kamel explained that the money you receive for free could amount to more than half a billion dollars by the age of 65. This is without adding any additional funds.
Save the 529 plans for education. This plan has much better tax benefits. You are using your after-tax earnings, and you can withdraw them tax free. They also grow tax-free. “This is the most effective way to pay for your education costs,” explained he. When it comes to the other options, such as a Roth IRA, you’ll need income. The real strength of the Trump Account lies in the fact that no income is required.
The account’s estimated value at age 18 is $5,800. At age 55 it may reach approximately $200,000. Kamel said that it may also grow to $5 million at age 65.
Kamel warns parents to be careful not to neglect their debts, retirement funds, or emergency savings while investing for their kids.
He said: “I’m glad we brought this topic to light with the Trump Accounts… but the sad reality is that most Americans don’t invest, and even fewer have the means to do so for their children.” We tell them to get out of debt, not owe anyone money and have an emergency savings fund, so they can build their own wealth. Once you have invested 15% of your income in your retirement, only then can you think about investing money for your children.

The truth is that many kids have to help their parents, who are aging and didn’t save for retirement. Now they have to pay for their retirement and support themselves, as well as their children. This has placed a heavy burden on younger generations”, Kamel added. “I don’t want to do that for my children.”
If you get the mindset early that compounding growth is key, you will be able to pass on a legacy that your children can look back and say, “Wow! I cannot believe how my parents set me up.”

OpenAI Slashed AI Prices. Usage Soared and Revenue Jumped.

AI’s price is dropping fast. This might seem like bad news to the industry. Evidence suggests that the opposite may be happening.
OpenAI has recently reduced the price of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80%. The company also reduced the cost of its Terra mid-range model by 20 percent.
The customers began using AI in a dramatic way.
TD Cowen analysts analyzed usage data of OpenRouter. This service allows developers to access different AI model. After the price cuts, the cost of Luna was reduced by a factor of ten. Consumption grew by 14 times. Terra’s cost-effectiveness fell by roughly threefold, while consumption increased fivefold.
AI is often measured by “tokens”, the tiny units of data that models can process. Many companies pay for AI models according to the tokens consumed.
It is remarkable that the usage increased faster than the prices. OpenAI revenue for Luna rose 34%, according to TD Cowen. This compares with the 7-day period prior to the price reduction. Terra’s revenue increased by about 45%.
Luna’s situation is most noteworthy. It’s rare to see a company generate revenue when they slash the price of a product by 80%.
This clearly shows the idea that AI executives repeat so frequently, it has become a cliche in our industry. This is something I have forbidden myself to write about. With such interesting data, I will finally use the term Jevons paradox.
Yuck. Now I’m feeling a little dirty.
The idea is a 19th-century one, when William Stanley Jevons, an economist, observed that the improvement in efficiency of coal usage didn’t lead to a reduction in coal consumption. The idea was born in the 19th century, when economist William Stanley Jevons observed that improvements to coal use efficiency did not reduce consumption. A resource that is useful can be made cheaper to encourage more people to use it.
Many people find this counterintuitive. It’s common knowledge in Silicon Valley because this has happened repeatedly.
Computers are a good example. It used to cost a fortune to even tap into the mainframe machine for just a few minutes. Business computers were then introduced, which cost so much money that they could only be afforded by companies. You can now buy a powerful smartphone, which is capable of performing better than the old computers, for less than $400.
Guess what else? These small computer are carried around by almost everyone on Earth. Was revenue affected by the price drop? No. Apple’s latest quarter generated revenue of $109 billion. This is up from the annual revenue of just under $100 million when Apple went public in 1980, back then computers were much more expensive.
The AI system could follow the same pattern.
AI can now be used to perform tasks previously not worth it due to lower prices. AI models can be used to write and develop more software as well as analyze more documents.
Ramp discovered that OpenAI GPT-5.6 Sol captured more spending from businesses in July than Anthropic Fable 5’s top model. This was probably because OpenAI is a cheaper model, so businesses chose it over Fable.
The fact that the cost to produce AI tokens has also fallen is a key factor. The new computing systems will be able to produce them more efficiently. This means that token prices are going down again.
It’s still too early to tell if the OpenAI price reductions will continue. Analysts themselves stated that they wanted to know if the trend would continue over time.
As of now, we can learn a simple lesson: the cheaper AI becomes, the more AI we will use.

United flight aborts takeoff at Chicago O’Hare due to blown tires

According to audio from air traffic control, a United Airlines plane barreling down a runway at Chicago O’Hare International Airport abruptly aborted its takeoff on Thursday because of blown tires.
According to Federal Aviation Administration, passengers deplaned via stairways on the runway. They were transported to the terminal by bus after “safely aborting takeoff” of the Boeing 737.
Air traffic control audio on ATC.com shows that a nearby pilot who witnessed the accident said, “We saw lots and lots of pieces of tire rolling down the runway.”
According to audio, rescue personnel stated that there were two flat tires on the main right gear. Pilots informed emergency responders all passengers were fine.
According to the airline, there were 161 passengers and six crew on board. The airline reported that no injuries had been reported as a result of the damage to the tires.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was the destination. United Airlines said that it would arrange another flight to take passengers to Phoenix on Thursday.
FAA investigates.
