Rebecca Katz, an influential Democratic strategist, said that Mamdani’s 2025 campaign was a high-risk venture with high rewards. “He is not afraid to make some big swings.” In a race to unseat Rep. Dan Goldman from a district that is split between Manhattan, Brooklyn, he’s supporting Brad Lander. Lander teamed with Mamdani last year in the mayoral election. Mamdani supports state Assembly Member Claire Valdez against Brooklyn Borough president Antonio Reynoso, the choice of retiring congresswoman Nydia Velizquez. Mamdani announced recently that he would support activist and organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier in a Bronx-Manhattan district over Rep. Adriano Espaillat who is the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. But in areas that are ridly gentrifying, longtime New Yorkers will be pitted against newcomers. Mamdani has also chosen candidates in their 30s for two races – the open 7th District of Velazquez and Espaillat, which are both held by Velazquez – signaling that he is pushing generational change. Avila Chevalier told a Harlem-area press conference that the establishment had never really understood uptown or the Bronx.
