Grinch Movie Sequel in the Works with Jim Carrey in Talks to Return

It’s going to be merry Grinchmas all over again. Universal and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with three key players expected to return.
Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise his role as the classic Dr. Seuss character the Grinch, with Ron Howard returning to direct. Howard will produce alongside his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer.
The untitled sequel will have a script by Alec Berg (Barry, Silicon Valley, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jeff Schaffer (Life, Larry and The Pursuit of Unhappiness, Dave, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and David Mandel (Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm). The trio also worked on the 2003 Seuss adaptation The Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers.
Released just ahead of Thanksgiving in 2000, How The Grinch Stole Christmas was the top movie of the year domestically with $260 million and earning a total of $345 million worldwide.
It also took home the best makeup Oscar for Rick Baker and Gail Rowell-Ryan, who transformed Carrey for the role. The process took around eight hours a day, and Carrey has recalled it being extremely difficult. As he told Vulture last year, he wanted to quit on day one of production and return his $20 million fee. He got through it with the help of a man who trained CIA agents to withstand torture, as well as thanks to the makeup eventually being reduced to three hours a day.
The story of the Grinch dates back to 1957, with Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) publishing the story inspired by his unhappiness with the commercialism overtaking Christmas. It told the story of the Grinch trying to ruin Christmas for the residents of Whoville by stealing their gifts. CBS made it as a 1966 animated special, with Boris Karloff voicing the narrator and The Grinch. Co-director Chuck Jones opted to make the Grinch green, a departure from the book’s black and white.
The 2000 movie has become a durable hit on streaming, and has been among Nielsen’s top 10 most streamed holiday movies in each of the last five years. And, last year in the two weeks ahead of and after Christmas (Dec. 15-Dec. 28), it peaked at No. 2 overall on the movies chart with 962 million minutes viewed, just below the perennial No. 1 champ Home Alone. Notably, Carrey’s Grinch movie also ranked ahead of the 2018 animated movie in those key two weeks on last year’s holiday streaming ratings chart. That Illumination and Universal feature, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, hit No. 8 in the week ahead of Dec. 25.
As for the new sequel, CEO Susan Brandt will oversee for Dr. Seuss Enterprises. Senior vice president of production development and special projects Britt Hennemuth and creative executive Christina Hoffrogge will oversee for Universal.
Howard is represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker. Carrey is represented by WME and attorney Deborah Klein. Berg is represented by UTA and HJTH. Schaffer is represented by UTA and HJTH.
Mandel is represented by WME and HJTH. Imagine Entertainment is represented by CAA.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises is represented by CAA.

Jason Sudeikis Frustrated With Olivia Wilde Sharing Breakup Convo: ‘Real Story Is Being Overlooked’

Jason Sudeikis is reportedly frustrated after his ex-fiancée, Olivia Wilde, went into detail about the end of their relationship.
During the Wednesday, June 17, episode of Call Her Daddy, Wilde, 42, spoke about a specific conversation she and Sudeikis, 50, had that made her realize their relationship was over.
“Jason and I had been having a rough time for a while. We had a real bumpy, bumpy ride,” the Don’t Worry Darling director told podcast host Alex Cooper.
Wilde went on to explain that on the way home from a birthday celebration for her, she asked the Ted Lasso star if he had gotten her anything for her birthday.
“He said, ‘What would I get you, Olivia? I don’t know you,'” she recalled. “And he wasn’t wrong. We didn’t know each other anymore. That was when we realized it was over.”
However, sources close to the actor told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack on Thursday, June 18, that he felt like Wilde’s version of events left out important context.
“The narrative makes it sound like Jason simply checked out of the relationship,” one source said. “People close to them remember a far more complicated situation.”
Another source said that Sudeikis and “those closest to him feel the real story is being overlooked.”
“From their perspective, everything changed when Olivia fell for Harry [Styles],” the source continued. Wilde and Styles, 32, were in a relationship for nearly two years after meeting on the set of her film, Don’t Worry Darling in 2020 — around the same time she and Sudeikis called it quits.
“Jason has spent years rebuilding his life,” the source added. “He doesn’t understand why old wounds need to be reopened when everyone involved is trying to move on.”
A third source told Naughty But Nice that Sudeikis was initially worried about his kids learning of the former couple’s conversation in the future.
“Jason is incredibly private and was shocked to see this story resurface years later,” the source explained. “His first thought was their children. One day they’ll read these interviews, and that’s what hurts the most.”
The Tron: Legacy actress and Sudeikis first began dating in 2011 and went on to welcome two children – Otis, 12, and Daisy, 9.

Timothy Busfield Asks Judge to Dismiss Grand Jury Indictment

Timothy Busfield wants his indictment thrown out … telling a judge the prosecutors’ presentation of evidence to the grand jury failed to tell the whole story.
The actor filed papers asking a judge to toss the grand jury indictment because the state of New Mexico has “abdicated its role in administering justice” and is blindly pursuing an indictment against him.
Busfield says prosecutors are well aware of an independent investigation into the allegations against him conducted by Warner Bros. that he says found nothing to back those allegations, a lie detector test Busfield passed in which he said he never inappropriately touched one of the alleged victims, and multiple witness affidavits defending him … but has chosen to ignore all of that.
The star says he decided to testify in his own defense in front of the grand jury … and he claims he was treated unfairly by the prosecutor, who he says treated the appearance like “adversarial cross-examination.”
As you know … Busfield surrendered to authorities in New Mexico in January, several days after a warrant for his arrest was issued — and he was indicted on child sex abuse charges in early February. He has denied all the allegations against him. His wife, fellow actress Melissa Gilbert, has insisted he’s innocent as well.
Our “2 Angry Men” podcast hosts Harvey Levin and Mark Geragos have insisted the prosecutors are out-of-control headline seekers … blasting them for not looking into the criminal conviction on fraud charges by one of the parents connected to the case.

Judith and Wylie Sheldon found dead in running car on 5 Freeway

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the deaths of a couple whose bodies were found in a running vehicle on the side of the 5 Freeway near Redding earlier this week.
The deceased were identified as Judith and Wylie Sheldon, longtime members of the San Francisco art community who lived in the city’s Pacific Heights neighborhood. Judith was 84 and Wylie was 86.
Around 5:46 p.m. Monday, a CHP officer stopped after seeing a Jeep Compass pulled over on the right shoulder of the 5 north of Fawndale Road. Inside, he found the Sheldons unresponsive.
“A second CHP officer arrived on scene, and both officers rendered medical aid to the parties along with medical personnel,” the agency said in a statement.
The couple was pronounced dead at the scene. A cause of death is still under investigation, authorities said, but it “appears to be medically related.”
The temperatures in Redding that day were above normal, with a high of 109 degrees.
A representative from the National Weather Service told The Times this was “near record-breaking heat.”
The Sheldons spent their lives with other artists, often opening their home for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, according to reporting from SFGate. Judith was board chair for the festival.
“They were so dear and devoted to one another,” Anita Monga, the artistic director of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, told the outlet. “I know that being part of San Francisco was very important for them. They were in a position to be supportive of the arts. They raised their family here, and they were such integral parts of the community.”
