USA vs Australia World Cup prediction favors lower-scoring American win

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Happy Juneteenth to everyone out there. I’m sure those words will irk a few readers, but to be honest, I’ll take any federal holiday, as it means we get some time to enjoy anything we want. I know not every company is observing, but who doesn’t want a day off in the middle of June? Today is even a bit more special because we get a USA World Cup game as well.
My first-ever soccer article was about the USA World Cup team, and not only did the team win, but we won. I was wrong about the final score, but I was correct about Team USA winning. They were able to take down Paraguay. What I think was most enjoyable about the game — aside from the victory — was that the crowd was genuinely into the game. I know it is easy when goals are being scored and the team is winning, but America is not a soccer country. So, seeing the crowd going crazy and giving the team more energy was fun to watch.
Now they have a test against Team Australia. This should be a win for Team USA if we are going to base it on a recent game they’ve had in an international friendly competition. They played back in October, so the teams are largely the same. Those games aren’t always predictive, though. In order to keep the momentum coming, Team USA will need to remain aggressive in its attack. If they can strategically push the ball downfield, they should get a few good looks at a goalie that can be beaten.
Team Australia had a nice outcome in their first game as well, having won the first contest against Turkey. I don’t hate the Turkish team. They have some decent talent as well. Some games of the World Cup can just be dismissed because there is a huge mismatch. That isn’t the case here. Australia was methodical in its attack and won the game 2-0.
PATRIOTISM IS GREAT, BUT MAKING MONEY IS BETTER: ‘FADE THE PUBLIC’ IN TEAM USA VS AUSTRALIA IN WORLD CUP 2026
If you look at the stats from their first game, there is a big argument that Australia got lucky to win the game. They had half the shots on goal of Turkey, and they had possession of the ball for just 28% of the time. So, they were able to make the most of their opportunity. They had 12 fouls compared to just four on Turkey. I suppose there should be a fair amount of credit given to the Australian defense, considering they were able to stop all eight shots on goal, and if their opponent had the ball that often, it means they had to consistently stop the pressure.
If Australia can slow the game down against America, they might have another chance. I don’t think this is the most impressive team in the tournament, but they look like they don’t make a lot of mistakes. Will the kangaroo clan be able to capitalize on the USA’s mistakes today?

It is possible. The USA was the beneficiary of an own goal to start the scoring, then they got two more in the first half. They did create some great opportunities, but missed some of those chances. Their defense only faced one real attack, and their goalie stopped the ball. Australia needs to be more aggressive than they were in the first game, but I don’t think that’s their nature. I expect Team USA to win, but I think this is going to be a lower-scoring game. Give me the under 2.5.

UFC viewership figures for massive White House event released

Secretary of State Marco Rubio predicted a billion people would be watching the UFC Freedom 250 event held at the White House on June 14.
Rubio missed the mark by approximately 980 million people.
Viewership on Paramount+ reached 17 million across the U.S. and Latin America during UFC Freedom 250, according to Paramount+, citing Nielsen and Adobe Analytics in a press release issued Thursday June 18.
That shattered the Paramount+ record for highest viewership for an exclusive live event, according to the subscription-based streaming service, which said it has streamed thousands of exclusive live events since it launched in 2021.
The previous record was five million viewers for UFC 324 in January, when Paramount+ made its debut as the UFC’s streaming home. Paramount+ paid $7.7 billion over seven years for that exclusive right.
UFC seeks Super Bowl numbers
Expectations were high for the unprecedented seven-fight card on the South Lawn of the White House.
“We’re expecting Super Bowl-type numbers for this fight,’’ UFC CEO Dana White told UFC on TNT Sports.
The 2026 Super Bowl was watched by an estimated 125 million viewers, according to Nielsen. That total included viewership figures from NBC, Peacock, Telemundo, NBC Sports Digital and NFL+.
Two days before the event, Rubio chimed in during an appearance with White.
“A billion people all over the world will be watching America celebrate its 250th birthday with the White House in the background and some of the best athletes in the world in that Octagon,” he said.
The prediction was beyond optimistic. Paramount+ has about 80 million subscribers.
UFC Freedom 250 was available exclusively on Paramount+ only in the U.S. and Latin America. UFC will announce viewership numbers outside the U.S. and Latin America next week and Paramount+ provided no estimate.
Of the 17 million viewers reached June 14, 15.26 million came from the United States and 1.67 million came from Latin America.

Patriotism is great, but making money is better: ‘Fade the public’ in Team USA vs Australia in World Cup 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup heats up this Friday, June 19, as the United States faces Australia in a crucial Group D clash. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET at Lumen Stadium in Seattle, Washington, where a raucous home crowd awaits.
Both nations enter this matchup riding high after multi-goal victories in their World Cup openers. Yet, BetMGM has the Americans as -165 favorites, the Socceroos as +400 underdogs and the draw +320 with a total of 2.5 goals.
U.S EARNS HISTORIC WIN IN WORLD CUP OPENER AFTER BEATDOWN OF PARAGUAY AS THE LEGEND OF FOLARIN BALOGUN IS BORN
Can Team USA maintain its momentum, or will the Aussies pull off another massive shocker? Here are my main factors for the United States vs. Australia, followed by a best bet.
Christian Pulisic’s injury looms large for Team USA
American attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic left after the first half of the USA’s 4-1 win over Paraguay in their 2026 World Cup opener because of a calf injury.
WATCH THE WORLD CUP FINAL ON FOX ONE
According to SICscore.com, Pulisic has a history of calf issues, and he didn’t practice with the team this week. Calf problems can lead to more serious injuries, such as a torn Achilles tendon.
Meanwhile, this is the first World Cup with a 48-team field, and the knockout round now has 32 teams instead of 16.
Between more teams making the knockout round this year and Pulisic’s injury history, there is a 70/30 chance Team USA manager Mauricio Pochettino rests Pulisic on Friday.
HOW DO TEAMS ADVANCE IN THE 2026 WORLD CUP? TIEBREAKER RULES AND ROUND OF 32 FORMAT EXPLAINED
That matters.
In fact, my buddies, who bet on soccer much more often than I do, are saying there has been “load managing” in group play this year because there are more knockout-stage spots available.
Three of America’s goals against Paraguay came in the first half while Pulisic was on the pitch. I’m expecting the USA’s offense to be less explosive against Australia if Pulisic doesn’t play.
The underlying numbers weren’t as pretty as the scoreboard
Furthermore, the United States only had 1.42 expected goals against Paraguay, and America scored off an own goal.
Also, the Aussies shut out Türkiye 2-0 in their World Cup opener. However, they only had 1.18 expected goals and possessed the ball just 28% of the game.
Since Australia was a +425 underdog against Türkiye, the Socceroos essentially stole three points in group play.
ZERO BS. JUST DAKICH. TAKE THE DON’T @ ME PODCAST ON THE ROAD. DOWNLOAD NOW!
They also had the worst betting odds to win Group D, so with that in mind, the Socceroos will be happy to earn one point by tying the United States on Friday.
This is a classic fade-the-recent-result spot
Ultimately, this is an old-school “fading the recent result” handicapping angle, with Team USA looking amazing in its first game.
Per BetMGM’s John Ewing, 80% of the money is on the Over 2.5 goals at that sportsbook as of Wednesday evening.
CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP
Nonetheless, the Under is pricier at the market-making operations, such as Circa Sports in Las Vegas and the offshore oddsmaker Pinnacle Sportsbook.
Look, I want America to win as much as the next guy.
But, more importantly, I’m trying to make money.
And UNDER 2.5 goals (-115) at BetMGM is the sharper look in this game.

World Cup 2026: Seattle steps onto biggest stage with USA vs. Australia

While his players were still going through warmups on Thursday morning, Mauricio Pochettino moved aside a metal barricade surrounding the soccer field at the University of Washington and climbed to the top of the small hill behind the goal at the west end.
There, like a proud parent watching their kids on a random weekend day, the head coach of the U.S. men’s national team pulled out his phone and started taking video. For whatever the reason — the manicured field, the picturesque setting with Lake Washington and Mount Rainier both peaking out in the distance, or making sure there weren’t any spies around — Pochettino wanted to capture this moment.
“I wanted to see how everything (looks) without me,” Pochettino joked.
And then a moment later he added, “Amazing, beautiful facilities.”
While it was important for Pochettino to capture that moment, Friday will be a day for capturing moments never seen in Seattle when the United States and Australia meet in the group stage of the FIFA Men’s World Cup. The winner will clinch a spot in the Round of 32, and it would take an epic collapse to not finish top of the group.
Events such as Friday don’t come around here often. Perhaps never before. On an international scale, it might be the most significant sporting event to ever take place in Seattle.
NFC championship games are great. The Major League Baseball playoffs are electric, as evidenced by last October. The NBA Finals were fun in 1996. Same with the WNBA Finals this century. The Final Fours back in the 1980s and ’90s were fantastic. The three MLB All-Star Games are all memorable for their own reasons. The soccer cup finals — MLS, Concacaf and Leagues Cup — have all helped write Seattle’s storied history in the sport. The Goodwill Games in 1990 were internationally significant for what they were at the time.
But for sheer scale, try knocking Friday from the top spot.
“This is probably the biggest game Seattle will probably have in terms of soccer, and so I’m excited for the city to come out and show their energy,” U.S. and Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan said on Thursday. “But this is a sports town and they treat every big moment like that.”
The idea of a soccer match being the biggest single sporting event in a city is counterintuitive to American culture and sporting norms. It’s supposed to be the NFL first, followed by everything else.
But it’s the international component of the World Cup pushing this to the top — and it could be topped again in just a couple of weeks when a Round of 16 match is played in Seattle, potentially with the U.S. involved in that game as well.
While there’s only been one previous World Cup played in the U.S. in 1994, Seattle will be just the fourth different metropolitan area where the Stars and Stripes have played a World Cup match in North America.
In 1994, the opening match for the U.S. was in Pontiac, Mich., followed by two matches at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., and finally a knockout stage loss to Brazil in Palo Alto, Calif.
Throw in last Friday’s 4-1 win over Paraguay in Inglewood, Calif., and the U.S. has played three matches in the Los Angeles area, one in Detroit and one in the Bay Area.
And now, Seattle.
“I’m excited to see what it’s like,” said U.S. midfielder Weston McKennie, who was born in Tacoma before moving at a young age. “I’ve never been here with the national team before. Hopefully it’s similar to SoFi (Stadium), or better.”
Just like Pochettino before practice, plenty of fans — close to 67,000 of them — will capture similar moments with their phones and cameras on Friday. Some will take snaps and videos outside of Seattle Stadium as fans of the Socceroos merge with the American Outlaws and mingle about the stadium district chanting and singing and probably drinking far too early.
Inside the stadium, they’ll capture the players as they walk out while “Sirius” by The Alan Parsons Project — the old Chicago Bulls intro music — plays over the stadium speakers. They’ll see two countries that captured unexpected attention with what they did in their opening matches of the tournament — the U.S. thumping Paraguay and Australia unexpectedly toppling favored Turkey.
They should capture the moment, because on an international scale it hasn’t been bigger here.
“This is a city that’s ready to host these types of events,” Roldan said. “From the march to the match to how loud the stadium will be — hopefully the boom, boom, clap — I think the city of Seattle is going to create the advantage for the United States men’s national team.”
Roldan is the resident evangelist when it comes to this moment for the U.S. squad. McKennie said it’s been Roldan or, in the past, Jordan Morris or Clint Dempsey he’s heard sing the praises of what Seattle is as a soccer market.
Someone else who has a small taste for what Seattle could be like is Pochettino. In the summer of 2014, as a freshly appointed new manager at Tottenham, the first match of his tenure during the club’s summer tour happened to be an exhibition in Seattle against the Sounders.
Harry Kane was on the field that day for Tottenham. So too were Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin for the Sounders.
“I saw the ambience … and I hear they are very passionate people here,” Pochettino said. “I’m looking forward for tomorrow to share altogether a great night, I hope with a good result and good performance.”
Australia would like for nothing better than to build off victory over Turkey and ruin the American party, and perhaps dance around the city celebrating with inflatable kangaroos. The sides played in a friendly that was far from friendly last October, a match the U.S. won 2-1 and snapped a 12-game unbeaten streak by Australia.
But it was a physical, borderline chippy matchup that saw U.S. forward Christian Pulisic leave with an injury and seemed to come close to crossing the line between exhibition and competitive match with something significant at stake.
Pulisic is a question to play on Friday because of a calf injury, but there’s no questioning the significance of the matchup this time.
“I expect it to be a tough game. I don’t think it will be a nasty game, but a tough one,” U.S. defender Sergiño Dest said. “I think they’re physical, but we are physical as well. So it will be tough for them and tough for us.”
