PHILADELPHIA — Carlo Ancelotti heard the reactions and post‑match analysis after Brazil managed only a draw in its 2026 World Cup opener last Saturday.
Now, after not meeting the expectations for its roster, comes that test: Will the Seleção shake off those opening‑match jitters, meet their expectations and come with a different result on the field after a few days of training?
It’s something Brazil will look to do when it takes the field against Haiti in the second of three Group C matches at 8:30 p.m. ET inside Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Friday, June 19.

“The result wasn’t a good game against Morocco. (It) makes me a little critical of the team, but we have to make positive, constructive criticism, because as I said, ‘You don’t win the World Cup in the first game,’” Ancelotti said at his pre-match availability on Thursday. “We have to look for a solution.”
Haiti fell to Scotland 1-0 in its Group C opener last Saturday in Boston. Les Grenadiers are making their second-ever World Cup appearance, and their first since 1974. Headlining Haiti’s roster are goalkeeper Johny Placide, forward Duckens Nazon and center back Ricardo Ade.

Raphinha substituted after injury
Perhaps the only negative of an excellent first half for Brazil is an injury to left wing Raphinha, who was taken off in the 40th minute. The forward who plays for Barcelona appeared to pull up with a leg injury. Coming on to replace him is Rayan, a 19 year old from Bournemouth. Rayan was a revelation in the Premier League, scoring five goals after arriving in the winter transfer window.
Another Brazil goal from Matheus Cunha
The move by Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti to put Matheus Cunha into the starting lineup has paid immediate dividends. Cunha scored for the second time in the first half with an exquisite left-footed finish after receiving a through ball from Vinicius Junior. The move was first initiated by Lucas Paqueta winning the ball at midfield and quickly moving it forward to Vinicius with the Haiti defense unable to track back.
Brazil scores first with a Matheus Cunha deflection
Brazil has hit the front for the first time this World Cup with Matheus Cunha scoring off a rebound from a shot in the box by Vinicius Junior in the 23rd minute. Cunha initially received the ball at the middle before playing out wide to Vinicius, who cut inside for a shot. It was saved by Haiti keeper Johny Placide but the rebound was spilled in front of goal. Cunha and Haiti defender Hannes Delcroix both went for the ball. Delcroix got there first but his clearance went off Cunha into the net. The Manchester United player hit his signature surfing celebration.
Brazil goal by Raphinha wiped out due to offside
A beautiful ball over the top from Bruno Guimaraes to Raphinha was calmly put in by the Brazil forward who plays for Barcelona. But as the Brazilian fans cheered, offsides was called as Raphinha was a step too early making his run. Score remains 0-0 after 15 minutes.
Brazil still finding its footing after 10 minutes
Vinicius Junior has had a couple of spells on ball but has yet to generate anything against a Haiti defense that has been aggressive early. The midfield issues for Brazil that were apparent against Morocco remain as Lucas Paqueta was taken off the ball under pressure to generate a scoring chance for Haiti.
Vinicius down briefly after a hard tackle then a yellow
In one of his first touches, the Brazilian forward was tackled by a Haiti defender and the ball going out for a throw in. Vinicius Junior stayed down a moment before Brazil put the ball in play.
In the immediate aftermath of play, the first yellow card of the game was issued to Haiti’s Carlens Arcus, who got tangled up with the foot of a Brazilian player as the two went for the ball. Haiti fans showed their displeasure with the referee’s call.
It comes in the fourth minute of the game.

Little did La Tri fans know, but doing that brings bad luck to their team. Just ask the 2017 Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The day before the playoff game, Vikings fans put scarves on the statue. Their team went on to lose 38-7 and miss out on playing in the Super Bowl.

The dynamic of Fox Sports’ studio team between Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahmiovic and Alexi Lalas has been a trending topic so far this World Cup.
Let’s call the relationship between the two former world class strikers and the former U.S. men’s national team defender icy at best.
Ahead of Friday’s Group D game between the U.S. and Australia, the opening in-studio breakdown didn’t include Lalas.

Lalas, who has been a lightning rod for criticism for years as Fox’s lead soccer analyst, was instead on-site outside the stadium in Seattle with former U.S. women’s national team star Carli Lloyd and USMNT star Clint Dempsey.
Following France’s win over Senegal in which the French were sluggish in the first half, Lalas piggybacked off Landon Donovan’s comment about France’s performance being arrogant. To which Ibrahimovic responded: “It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence. Ignorant people will say it’s arrogance. Intelligent people will say it’s confidence.”

Earlier on Friday, Ibrahimovic posted on X a video of Henry and himself dribbling in the studio and the two keeping the ball away from Lalas: “The studio will never forget.”
Ibrahimovic appeared on James Corden’s late night World Cup wrap show, was hooked up to a lie-detector test and was asked, “Do you respect the opinions of all your fellow Fox Sports analysts?”
Ibrahimovic answered, “Yes.” The lie detector operated gave the thumbs down.

SEATTLE — Christian Pulisic was held out of the U.S. World Cup match against Australia on Friday because of a calf injury — an expected decision after he left last week’s opener at halftime and did not participate in full training this week.
“Christian is not available,” coach Mauricio Pochettino told Fox Sports before the game. “I think the feelings are good, and let’s hope that as soon as possible he can be ready to be selected again and be part of the team.”

An influential player in the USMNT’s 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Inglewood, California, Pulisic was removed after aggravating an ailment suffered in training a few days earlier.
U.S. officials were cautiously optimistic Pulisic would be able to return to face Australia in a match pitting Group D’s leaders. But they also did not want to risk a more significant injury that could threaten to end his World Cup.
On Thursday, Pochettino said, “Christian is strong and with a great mentality, and is [making] a fantastic effort to try to be ready as soon as possible.”
While the team trained early in the week at base camp in Irvine, California, Pulisic worked with trainers on the side and engaged in some ball work. In the segment of Thursday’s session at the University of Washington that was open to reporters, Pulisic did not participate.

In Pulisic’s absence, Pochettino started striker Ricardo Pepi against the Aussies at Lumen Field. That selection was a bit of a surprise, given his preference to play with Folarin Balogun as the lone center forward.
Speculation had pointed to a winger, such as Tim Weah or Alex Zendejas, or a midfielder, such as Sebastian Berhalter or Gio Reyna. In the opener, Berhalter replaced Pulisic and Malik Tillman slid into a more advanced role.
In his World Cup debut, Pepi replaced Balogun, a two-goal scorer, in the 72nd minute.

Happy Juneteenth to everyone out there. I’m sure those words will irk a few readers, but to be honest, I’ll take any federal holiday, as it means we get some time to enjoy anything we want. I know not every company is observing, but who doesn’t want a day off in the middle of June? Today is even a bit more special because we get a USA World Cup game as well.
My first-ever soccer article was about the USA World Cup team, and not only did the team win, but we won. I was wrong about the final score, but I was correct about Team USA winning. They were able to take down Paraguay. What I think was most enjoyable about the game — aside from the victory — was that the crowd was genuinely into the game. I know it is easy when goals are being scored and the team is winning, but America is not a soccer country. So, seeing the crowd going crazy and giving the team more energy was fun to watch.
Now they have a test against Team Australia. This should be a win for Team USA if we are going to base it on a recent game they’ve had in an international friendly competition. They played back in October, so the teams are largely the same. Those games aren’t always predictive, though. In order to keep the momentum coming, Team USA will need to remain aggressive in its attack. If they can strategically push the ball downfield, they should get a few good looks at a goalie that can be beaten.
Team Australia had a nice outcome in their first game as well, having won the first contest against Turkey. I don’t hate the Turkish team. They have some decent talent as well. Some games of the World Cup can just be dismissed because there is a huge mismatch. That isn’t the case here. Australia was methodical in its attack and won the game 2-0.
PATRIOTISM IS GREAT, BUT MAKING MONEY IS BETTER: ‘FADE THE PUBLIC’ IN TEAM USA VS AUSTRALIA IN WORLD CUP 2026
If you look at the stats from their first game, there is a big argument that Australia got lucky to win the game. They had half the shots on goal of Turkey, and they had possession of the ball for just 28% of the time. So, they were able to make the most of their opportunity. They had 12 fouls compared to just four on Turkey. I suppose there should be a fair amount of credit given to the Australian defense, considering they were able to stop all eight shots on goal, and if their opponent had the ball that often, it means they had to consistently stop the pressure.
If Australia can slow the game down against America, they might have another chance. I don’t think this is the most impressive team in the tournament, but they look like they don’t make a lot of mistakes. Will the kangaroo clan be able to capitalize on the USA’s mistakes today?

It is possible. The USA was the beneficiary of an own goal to start the scoring, then they got two more in the first half. They did create some great opportunities, but missed some of those chances. Their defense only faced one real attack, and their goalie stopped the ball. Australia needs to be more aggressive than they were in the first game, but I don’t think that’s their nature. I expect Team USA to win, but I think this is going to be a lower-scoring game. Give me the under 2.5.
