James Burrows, legendary director of ‘Cheers’ and ‘Friends,’ dies at 85

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Beloved Hollywood director, James Burrows, died on Friday at the age of 85.
Burrows’ family confirmed the actor’s death in a statement to People magazine, The Associated Press reported, saying they are celebrating “the extraordinary life and enduring legacy,” of the director, who “passed away peacefully today surrounded by his loving family.”
“For more than five decades, Burrows was one of the most influential and beloved directors in television history,” the statement read. “As a legendary director, mentor, and creative force, he helped shape generations of comedy and brought immeasurable joy to audiences around the world.”
The statement then highlighted his “unparalleled career,” as he directed over “1,000 episodes of television and was instrumental in creating some of the most iconic series ever produced.”
‘CHEERS’ STAR GEORGE WENDT’S CAUSE OF DEATH REVEALED
Often referred to as the “king of the multi-cam sitcom,” Burrows had his big break in the industry when he directed episodes of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which led to him becoming one of the principal directors of “Taxi,” which earned him his first two Emmy Awards.
He then went on to co-create the hit sitcom, “Cheers,” and directed all but 35 of the 275 episodes of the show. His work on the show earned him six Emmy Awards throughout its run.
“But beyond his remarkable achievements, Burrows will be remembered for something even greater: his kindness, generosity, and unwavering belief in the people around him,” the statement continued. “He possessed a rare ability to make everyone better and was known for remembering every person he met by name, making colleagues at every level feel seen, valued, and appreciated.”
Burrows also directed the pilot and key episodes of “Friends,” as well as every episode of “Will & Grace,” and as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after sitcom directors worked on “Two and a Half Men,” “The Big Band Theory,” “Two Broke Girls,” “Frasier” and many others.
“Burrows understood that great comedy was never simply about laughter. It was about humanity, connection, and truth. That understanding became the foundation of a career that forever changed television,” his family wrote in their statement to People. “His influence will continue to be felt for generations through the countless artists he inspired, the stories he helped tell, and the millions of people whose lives were brightened by his work.”
“Above all else, Burrows was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,” the statement concluded. “He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie, his four daughters, and his seven grandchildren. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered. Our thoughts are with Debbie, his children and grandchildren, his family, friends, collaborators, and all those whose lives he touched. May his memory be a blessing.”
JAMES VAN DER BEEK’S CO-STARS FLOOD SOCIAL MEDIA WITH HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTES FOLLOWING HIS DEATH AT 48
Throughout his career, Burrows earned 11 Emmy Awards and five Directors’ Guild Awards, and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2006.

Messing shared a series of photos from their time together on “Will & Grace” on Instagram, and in the caption called him “A singular talent and revolutionary in television.”
“I can’t express the pain of his loss, and I know that is true for everyone who was lucky enough to be loved by him,” she wrote in part. “Jimmy changed my life 28 years ago and has been in my life ever since. He had a dry sense of humor but exploded in laughter when he orchestrated comic moments that landed. I wanted his laughs most of all.”
Aniston, who he directed on “Friends,” referred to him as “Papa Burrows” in her Instagram tribute, adding, “The hardest thing about writing this is that you spent a lifetime making people feel loved, and now it feels impossible to put all of that love into a few paragraphs.”

“He was a father figure to me. He always checked in on me,” she wrote in part. “He worried about me, celebrated me, taught me, guided me, and held me through the hardest times and the best of times. He spoiled us rotten. Most of all, he taught us—the kids—how important it is to love and respect one another. To take care of each other. To have each other’s backs and support each other, no matter what. And we did just that.”

The 43-year-old country singer recently took to Instagram to share a video of her driving past a large fence adorned with American flags throughout the length of the property.
“I can’t believe I get to live here. Thank you, Lord. #GodBlessAmerica #Grateful #TN,” she captioned the post.
Fans in the comments section were just as inspired by the display of patriotism, with one saying a similar display they saw at Eric Trump’s Trump Winery in Virginia “actually brought tears to my eyes. So patriotic. ”

Underwood showed her patriotism in January 2025, when she performed “America the Beautiful” in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda during the inauguration of President Donald Trump.
She avoided an awkward moment when the music cut out ahead of her performance, leading her to tell the crowd, “You know the words, help me out here,” and singing it a cappella.

“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said in a statement. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
The announcement was met with mixed reactions, with some, such as “The View’s” Joy Behar, criticizing her decision, and others defending it.
During an interview with Fox News Digital at the time, Lee Greenwood came to her defense, saying, “She will do a great job singing at the Capitol with ‘America the Beautiful.’”
“I’ll sing before the President takes his oath,” he added. “She will sing after. And just the moment will be magic. For those people who have something negative to say, I say keep it to yourself. Don’t attack a friend of mine who is here for the same reason as I am to inaugurate the 47th President of the United States.”

Kim Kardashian Ditches Her Signature Long Black Hair for a Surprising Bleach Blonde Bob

The Gist
Kim Kardashian ditched her signature long black hair in favor of a bleach blonde bob.
Kardashian debuted the look, which appeared to be a wig, while leaving a dermatology office in Beverly Hills on June 19.
She paired the bob with nude pink lipstick and light brown eyeliner.
Kim Kardashian turned heads as she exited her dermatologist’s office in Beverly Hills on Friday. On June 19, Kardashian debuted a surprise bleach blonde hair transformation that was a huge departure from her typical jet-black look.
Ditching her signature black locks for the day, Kardashian donned a bleach blonde bob, presumably a wig, that made the Skims founder nearly unrecognizable at first glance. Kardashian’s hair, styled with a side part, fell in loose waves just past her jawline. While the look doesn’t seem to be permanent, it’s definitely in line with Kardashian’s other hair transformations in recent months.
She paired the new hairstyle with nude matte lipstick in a soft pink shade and light brown eyeliner. For her outfit, Kardashian opted for a plunging trench coat worn as a dress. To complete the look, she cinched the design with a thin belt and styled the outfit with oversized black sunglasses, a Gucci handbag, and matching pointed-toe heels. In one hand, Kardashian also carried a blue Dodgers hat.
Last summer, she donned a wavy black bob while attending the Balenciaga Haute Couture fall/winter 2025/2026 show at Paris Fashion Week. The hairstyle, also parted at the side, beautifully complemented her Marilyn Monroe-inspired halter dress, which featured a plunging neckline and thigh-high slit. She styled the look with white leggings, matching pointed-toe heels, and black sunglasses.
A few months later, in October, Kardashian opted for a Kris Jenner-inspired pixie cut while at the Maison Margiela womenswear spring/summer 2026 show. The choppy pixie cut—which her hairstylist Chris Appleton deemed the “Paris pixi”—featured a short back and sides and longer pieces that fell across her forehead, creating the illusion of bangs. She paired the chic French pixie cut with an oversized trench coat, a black ribbon choker, sky-high boots, and a long strapless dress with a corset bodice.
Notably, Kardashian debuted another blonde bombshell transformation while attending the Met Gala in May. For the star-studded event, Kardashian ditched her signature dark brown hair for a retro blowout in a warm, golden blonde. The new hair paired perfectly with her liquid armored corseted bodysuit in orange, designed by Allen Jones and Whitaker Malem.

Jimmy Kimmel taps Rosie O’Donnell as rotating guest host during two-month hiatus

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel will take a two-month break from hosting his eponymous ABC program, tapping comedian and frequent Donald Trump foe Rosie O’Donnell as one of several guest hosts to fill in during his absence.
“I hope you’re paying attention this summer, because I will be taking the next two months off — this time voluntarily,” he said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Thursday evening, joking about his suspension last year for his comments about reactions to conservator commentator Charlie Kirk’s death.
Guest hosts will start the week of July 6, kicking off with Tiffany Haddish, followed by Anthony Anderson, Ike Barinholtz, Colman Domingo and Jelly Roll, according to an ABC press release.
“And as a special treat for our commander in chief, I asked one of his all-time favorites, Rosie O’Donnell, to be here to keep the hits coming,” Kimmel said. “You’re welcome, and all I ask in return, Mr. President, is that you don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone.”
Last year, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” was pulled from air for nearly a week after his Sept. 15 broadcast, when the host criticized some Republicans for their response to Kirk’s death.
The remarks drew swift condemnation from prominent Republican figures and prompted FCC Chair Brendan Carr to threaten regulatory action. The show’s removal also sparked viewer outrage over free speech and expression, as well as protests outside Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, and ABC headquarters in New York.
Kimmel returned to air on Sept. 23, visibly emotional as he addressed the suspension.
“You understand it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” he said, referring to Kirk. “I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.”
That episode drew more than 6 million total viewers. In his return monologue, Kimmel also offered a defense of free speech.
“This show is not important,” Kimmel said. “What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this.”

Black SUV seen leaving Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island home amid potential bachelorette bash

Taylor Swift’s summer is shaping up to be anything but cruel.
A black SUV with tinted windows was spotted leaving Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island mansion a little before 11 a.m. local time on Saturday, as the pop star gears up to marry Travis Kelce on July 3.
An eyewitness claimed to TMZ that it was the songwriter herself.
Sources also told the outlet that Swift, 36, is celebrating her upcoming nuptials to the NFL star, also 36, with her girlfriends at her $17 million oceanside vacation home.
On Wednesday, a woman – who resembled Swift — was seen wearing white and surrounded by three pals dressed in black on the balcony of her Watch Hill property.
The Grammy winner’s best friend Abigail Anderson Berard was also pictured holding a young child on the balcony.
The outlet reported that security was present at the mansion — including an armed guard at the gate.
Kelce, meanwhile, was in Los Angeles on Monday for his “New Heights” podcast live show, before partaking in a night out on the town Wednesday.
Kelce partied at Bird Streets Club with brother, Jason Kelce, comedian Druski and his former Kansas City Chiefs teammate Ross Travis.
The NFL star spent Friday at Chris Lake’s Los Angeles concert.
At one point Travis kept his fiancée close to his heart as he danced on stage to a remix of her track.
He screamed to the crowd, “I know y’all feel it” and “lose your f—ing minds.”
Swift and Travis are set to tie the knot at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Multiple sources told Page Six that the couple is using celebrity wedding planner Mark Seed to coordinate the event.
An insider added that Seed and the couple have been working together “for months.”
It was originally reported that Swift and Travis were going to say “I Do” on June 13 at posh Ocean House in Watch Hill.
Allegedly Swift was so adamant about that specific day that she cut a hefty check to another bride-to-be who had already booked her wedding at the venue.
Months later, it was revealed that Swift and Travis switched up their location to accommodate more people.
Exact details surrounding the pair’s wedding have been kept under wraps.
In April, Travis’ sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce, revealed she is sick and tired of the public trying to squeeze information out of her about the special day.
The athlete addressed the audience on her “Not Gonna Lie” podcast at the time, stating: “Quit asking me and me and my mother-in-law about upcoming nuptials. Nobody’s f–king telling you anything.”
Kylie also asked fans to stop questioning her mother-in-law, Donna Kelce, in person.
“Stop f–king asking my mother-in-law, TMZ. F–king being creeps in the f–ing airport,” she ranted. “Ew. Here’s the thing, even if I did have any information, I’m not f–king telling you. That’s private information between family. A and B, see your way out.”
