Meta Exposed Data Internally From Its Controversial Employee-Tracking Program

Meta left potentially sensitive information collected from employee laptops accessible to anyone inside the company, according to an internal security notice seen by WIRED and three current employees familiar with the issue.
The data, which was collected as part of a divisive initiative to train artificial intelligence models, is believed to include keystrokes, mouseclicks, and content displayed on the computer screens of Meta’s US employees.
Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton confirms the company is investigating the security issue. “We have carefully designed this program with privacy safeguards,” he says, adding, “we have no indication at this time that any data was improperly accessed by Meta employees.”
The security notice sent out Monday indicated that “employee data across 45,000 hive tables,” had been exposed. Those tables included employee activity such as “full prompts and transcriptions, private conversations, people and performance data,” according to documents viewed by WIRED.
Some employees at Meta quickly seized on the security failure, saying in internal forums that it validated concerns they had raised when the company began tracking workers’ corporate laptops in April as part of a program known as the Model Capability Initiative.
Got a Tip?Are you a current or former Meta employee who wants to talk about what’s happening? We’d like to hear from you. Using a nonwork phone or computer, contact the reporters securely on Signal Peard33.24 and at ChaoticGoode.12.
Comments about the incident posted on internal forums Monday included questions about how Meta’s privacy reviews failed to prevent the breach, and whether everyone whose data was potentially exposed will be allowed to attend a meeting going over what went wrong, according to posts seen by WIRED.
In one internal forum where staffers are known to trade jokes, an employee posted a meme from The Office of the character Jim Halpert holding a sign that reads, “0 days since our last nonsense.”
Sources at Meta, who were not authorized to speak publicly, tell WIRED the incident has now been marked as closed, meaning it was likely resolved. In an internal post to employees on Monday, Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, said that the tracking program’s implementation had fallen short of the standards outlined in its privacy review and that findings from the incident would be shared.
Last month, more than 1,600 employees at the tech giant signed an internal petition protesting the laptop surveillance effort, warning that “collecting this data introduces both security and regulatory risks for Meta, including the potential for breaches and unauthorized disclosure.” The petitioners also expressed concerns with what they viewed as a lack of safeguards that Meta had put in place. One engineer also wrote a widely shared internal note saying having their laptop screen scraped for training data without their consent felt like an invasion of privacy and amounted to exploitation.
Meta executives have previously defended the data-gathering project, saying it was necessary to train AI systems to use computer software the way humans do. In audio of a company meeting leaked last month, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, told employees that “AI models learn from watching really smart people do things,” and the “average intelligence of the people who are at this company is significantly higher” than the average contractor who could be hired specifically to produce this kind of data.
But after widespread protest from employees, Meta this month began offering more exemptions to the monitoring, including letting staffers briefly turn off the surveillance so they could complete sensitive tasks, such as scheduling a personal appointment, according to two people familiar with the matter. Some employees are still demanding that the tracking be stopped altogether.

Amazon Prime Day 2026 FAQs:
What deals do you typically see on Prime Day?
You’ll find major markdowns across categories of all types during Prime Day, but certain discounts truly shine. Amazon-branded products (from Fire TVs to Kindles and more) are often at their lowest prices of the year. We commonly see vacuums and countertop kitchen appliances on mega sale, sometimes up to 50-60% off.
While grills and pool accessories will likely get their prices slashed after summer, patio furniture sets and lawn supplies are usually down to impressive lows for Prime Day. The same goes for warm-weather wardrobe and skin care essentials, like sundresses and sunscreen.
What’s better, Prime Day deals or Black Friday deals?
Asking shopping editors to choose between Prime Day and Black Friday deals is like asking a chef to choose between salt and butter. Both savings events offer stellar prices on the most sought-after items. But since they land at different times of the year, there’s some variation in the offerings.
While Prime Day is a fabulous time to score Amazon-branded items and home essentials for less, Black Friday often sees steep sales on beauty, clothing, large appliances and laptops. Of course, discounts change from year to year, so if you have something specific on your wishlist, be sure to keep an eye out no matter which sale is taking place. Surprises happen!
Does Prime Day include discounts on subscriptions?
While Prime Day memberships themselves aren’t discounted during Prime Day, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial any time of year. (After that trial month, you’ll be charged $14.99 per month, and you can cancel at any time.) If you are between 18 and 24 years old, you may qualify for a free 6-month trial.
While the best Prime Day deals are often reserved for Prime members, you don’t necessarily need a Prime account to access deals that are open to everyone. That said, you’ll save more with one, in addition to receiving perks like free shipping.
How can I track Prime Day deals?
If you’d rather not have to refresh Amazon’s deals page during Prime Day, we’ve got you. Our shopping experts will be working around the clock — literally — to dig up and curate the best Prime Day deals, sparing you from the dud discounts.
On that note, let’s get the price-slash party going early, shall we? We’re already seeing bargains popping up, so beat the rush and add these deal-hunter-approved markdowns to your cart now.
If you have Amazon Prime, you’ll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.)

47+ Best Deals On Apple, Shark, Le Creuset And More

Amazon Prime Day is happening now through June 26, offering exclusive discounts to Prime members (if you’re not a member yet, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial). Some of the top deals include the Oura Ring 4, Medicube Zero Pore Pads, Samsonite luggage set, plus there’s lots of essentials on sale, like trash bags and dishwasher pods.
I frequently cover shopping events like Prime Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday as a reporter for NBC Select, so I know how to find deals that are actually worth buying. I also spent weeks combing through thousands of discounts to find the best Prime Day deals — each one I recommend below is highly rated and 20 percent off or more, as well as at its lowest price in at least three months.
I’m updating this list live throughout Amazon Prime Day, so check back for new deals throughout the day.
Want more from NBC Select? Sign up for our newsletter, The Selection, and shop smarter.
The best Prime Day 2026 deals
Prime Day is an ideal time to save on household essentials like dishwasher pods, and Cascade’s made our list of the very best. You get 57 in a box — with the discount, that’s only about $0.29 per pod. Each one has soap inside that gets rid of grime, grease, sticky stuff and stuck-on food residue. NBC Select senior editor Shalwah Evans says the pods even get the worst residue off her air fryer rack and frying pans.
I’ve been a loyal AirPods Pro user for years. I use them to listen to music, take calls and while I’m doing workouts. This is Apple’s most recent model, with multiple listening modes (including noise cancellation) and up to 10 hours of battery life, according to the brand. The earbuds have sensors that track your heart rate and calories burned in workouts, a hearing aid feature and live language translation abilities. They come with ear tips in five sizes so you can get the best fit, and a Mag-Safe charging case for easy juicing up.
This vacuum will be the cleaning hero in your home due to its powerful suction that cleans up messes on all floors. It also has a built-in HEPA filter that traps dust and other allergens. It also has a detachable pod, which lets you access hard-to-reach areas like under furniture and above doorframes. The vacuum comes with useful attachments like a dusting brush and a crevice tool to reach tight corners.
Le Creuset’s 8-inch nonstick pan is made from anodized aluminum, a material that helps it heat up quickly and distribute heat evenly, according to the brand. It also has a textured interior that helps you brown and sear food. The pan is compatible with all stovetops, oven-safe up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, dishwasher-safe and works with metal utensils.
I’ve reported about oral care for six years, and no matter how many teeth whitening strips I test, Crest’s come out on top for two reasons: They actually work and they’re easy to use. The NBC Select Wellness Award-winning strips are coated in hydrogen peroxide to brighten your smile and remove surface stains, and they have a no-slip grip — I have conversations while wearing them and they don’t budge. You get 44 strips per pack, which is enough for 22 treatments.
These exfoliating pore pads have transformed my skin over the past nine months — I use them every other night, and over time, they’ve made my skin softer and smoother, and visibly reduced pore size in my t-zone. The pads are soaked in an AHA and BHA solution, and they’re dual-sided: The textured side gently buffs away dead skin cells and the soft side has a soothing effect. Medicube’s Zero Pore Pads come with tweezers to grab one at a time, and there’s a spot to store the tool in the jar’s lid.
My Samsonite luggage is still in great condition after I’ve beat it up during years of travel. This set comes with two of the brand’s hardside Omni suitcases: a 20-inch carry-on and a 24-inch checked bag. They’re both expandable and have a scratch-resistant exterior, an adjustable handle, interior organization systems and 360-degree dual spinner wheels. There’s also a built-in TSA-approved luggage lock on the checked bag.
Watch our Samsonite luggage review.
Once you connect devices like lamps, fans and small kitchen appliances to this smart plug, you can control them from the Amazon Alexa app or via voice commands. The app also lets you set up timers, schedules and routines, plus the plug is compact, so it keeps your second outlet free.
Beyond giving you a sheer tint and shine, Laneige’s lightweight lip balm is moisturizing thanks to ingredients like murumuru and shea butters. Once I apply it, it keeps my lips hydrated and soft for hours. The tube is pocket-sized, so I always bring it with me everywhere, and I either wear it on its own or put it over a more pigmented, matte lipstick.
Every time I use my Bissell Little Green Machine to spot clean carpet, area rugs and upholstered furniture, I’m amazed by how well it gets stains, odors and dirt out of fabric. It’s so easy to use: You just add water and the included cleaning solution to one removable tank, and then you use the nozzle to spray the solution on fabric, scrub the area and suction up the mess. The dirty water goes into a separate removable tank. The appliance comes with a self-cleaning tool to rinse out the hose when you’re done, a Tough Stain Tool and a Spraying Crevice Tool to get into tight spaces.
As someone who doesn’t have a dishwasher, I’m very picky about my dish soap, and Dawn Powerwash is the only one I’ve bought for years. It gets literally everything off my dishes with minimal scrubbing and no water, rinses off in seconds and never leaves behind spots or a grimy residue. This starter pack comes with one sprayer and four refill bottles of soap.
NBC Select reporter Harry Rabinowitz has tested the Oura Ring 4 for more than a year and says it’s a fantastic health, sleep and fitness tracker if you want something more subtle than a bulky smartwatch. Plus, he finds its data accurate. The Oura Ring gives you up to eight days of battery life per charge, and it’s water-resistant up to 328 feet. You’ll need an Oura Membership to see your data and use all of the app’s features — it’s $70 a year.
Read our Oura Ring 4 review.
This water flosser is an NBC Select Wellness Award-winner that also earned the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. It has three pressure settings and a water reservoir built into its handle that gives you about 45 seconds of continuous spray, according to the brand. The cordless, water-resistant Waterpik comes with four tips that rotate 360 degrees to reach all angles of your mouth. The brand says its battery lasts for up to four weeks per charge.
Upgrade your microwaveable popcorn with this dishwasher-safe kitchen gadget. You use the popper’s lid to measure out your popcorn kernels before pouring them inside, and then you put it in the microwave for about three minutes. You can also put butter on top of the lid — it has little holes, so as the butter melts, it drips over the fresh popcorn. The 3-quart popper has a wide mouth, so you can use it to serve the snack, and its handle stays cool.
Hairstylists we talked to love Amika’s Perk Up Dry Shampoo because it blends in easily with an invisible finish, gives you volume and texture between washes, and isn’t too heavy on hair, which means it doesn’t make hair fall flat. They say you can use the dry shampoo from roots to ends. It’s made with rice starch to absorb moisture, oils and odors from the scalp, as well as nourishing sea buckthorn berry.
I swapped disposable plastic bags for Stasher’s reusable, dishwasher-safe silicone ones years ago, and now I own too many to count. This pack comes with four in different sizes: snack, sandwich, stand-up mid and stand-up bowl. Each Stasher bag has a leak-free Pinch-Loc seal, and they’re microwave-, freezer-, sous-vide- and oven-safe up to 424 degrees Fahrenheit.
Read our Stasher Bag review.
See, hear and speak to visitors with Blink’s Video Doobell, which pairs with the brand’s app so you can livestream footage with a head-to-toe view from wherever you are. The app also sends you real-time notifications if you get a Blink subscription. The doorbell comes with three AA batteries inside, which you’ll need to replace about every two years, according to the brand. It’s compatible with Amazon-Alexa enabled devices, too.
I swear by Olaplex’s hair oil to soften, smooth out and add shine to my curls, and since a few drops go a long way, the bottle lasts me months. I always apply the oil before using hot tools since it offers heat protection up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, and it gives you frizz control and humidity resistance for up to 72 hours, according to the brand. The oil, which you can use on all hair types, as well as wet and dry hair, is also color-safe and works on chemically treated hair.

Why are these Prime Day deals worth it?
Amazon Prime Day historically offers Prime members some of the lowest prices of the year on products across categories, and these limited-time deals only last through June 26. All of my recommendations above are based on NBC Select’s previous coverage and reporting. I also included products the NBC Select staff has tested. I evaluated the quality of these deals by running them through price trackers like CamelCamelCamel, and I only included ones that:
Are at their lowest price in at least three months
Are 20% off or more
Are highly rated with at least a 4-star average rating from hundreds of customers on Amazon
Why trust NBC Select?
I’m a reporter at NBC Select who has covered Amazon since 2020. I write about the retailer’s biggest sales (Big Spring Sale, Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days), how to save the most money while shopping them and what’s included in a Prime membership. I also regularly appear in related NBC News NOW and TODAY segments. Prior to Prime Day, I previewed a list of deals from Amazon and sorted through them to find worthwhile sales you should know about.

Breakthrough At-Home Vision Testing Platform Reinvents the Eye Exam with MIT Science and Telehealth

LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 23, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Seventeen-year-old Mergers and Acquisitions firm ProNova Partners has announced it has been retained to develop major strategic partnership and acquisition relationships for a breakthrough at-home vision-testing technology built on optical science exclusively licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Image caption: ProNova Partners, Inc.

The platform lets a person measure their own vision with a smartphone and receive a doctor-generated eyeglass or contact lens prescription remotely, without a clinic visit. It spans seven FDA-registered medical devices and applications, and independent clinical trials have confirmed accuracy comparable to the in-office equipment used in a traditional eye exam.

More than 50,000 devices are in use across over 150 countries, built up over eight years of operation with zero product defects and zero litigation. The technology, while not meant to replace the traditional in-clinic eye exam, carries a full regulatory and quality stack, including ISO 13485 and HIPAA compliance, and is protected by more than two dozen issued patents.

“Every so often a technology quietly solves a problem an entire industry has worked on for decades,” said Terie Salinas, Chief Operating Officer of ProNova Partners. “This is one of those. It is fully built, clinically validated, and already in use worldwide. Our mandate is to bring the right strategic partners to it.”

The technology arrives as the roughly $60-billion U.S. vision-care market faces a growing shortage of eye-care providers, and as the traditional eye exam — essentially unchanged for two centuries — becomes the next consumer-health category reshaped by telehealth and artificial intelligence.

“We have completed more than 500 transactions across many arenas, including the medical-device, healthcare, and technology space,” Salinas said. “That is exactly the experience a platform like this requires.”

Company details are available to qualified parties upon execution of a standard non-disclosure agreement.

Meta Pauses an AI Training Program After Data Leak Sparks Employee Ire

Meta is pausing an internal AI training program after sensitive data was accessible across the entire company, according to screenshots obtained by Business Insider.
A screenshot showed that the leak exposed employees’ private conversations, performance data, and transcriptions. The incident was classified as a SEV 2 on a scale of 0 to 5, with 0 being the most severe.
A Meta spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the company is investigating.
“We have carefully designed this program with privacy safeguards, and while we have no indication at this time that any data was improperly accessed by Meta employees, we’re pausing it while we investigate,” the spokesperson said.
In April, Meta announced the AI training program, called the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), which was intended to improve the company’s AI models by using its staff’s keystrokes and mouse movements as training data. The program, which is mandatory for most staff, sparked a backlash from employees who felt uncomfortable with their data being recorded, Business Insider previously reported.
This leak is causing frustration within Meta, according to screenshots seen by Business Insider, with employees critical that data wasn’t locked down from the start.
“I am incensed,” one employee wrote on Monday about the recent leak in an internal group, according to a screenshot obtained by Business Insider.
“I don’t see any evidence of malicious access, but the fact that this data wasn’t locked down as originally promised is super frustrating,” the employee continued.
The leak is the latest in a string of recent security incidents for Meta. Last month, a flaw in its AI chatbot allowed people to hijack multiple Instagram accounts. A rogue AI agent also caused a severe incident in March, the Information reported.
Correction: June 22, 2026 — An earlier version of this story misstated Meta’s severity scale. 0 is the most severe on its scale.

Tesla pushes back on Autopilot narrative after fatal Texas crash

A fatal weekend crash in which a Tesla plowed through a brick home in Katy, Texas, killing a 76-year-old woman, set off alarms about the company’s driver assistance technology. By Monday afternoon, Tesla was fighting back against the framing.
The crash occurred Friday night when a Tesla Model 3 driven by Michael Butler left the road and slammed into the home of Martha Avila, who was airlifted to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Butler told Harris County sheriff’s deputies that the vehicle was on Autopilot at the time. That detail spread quickly, and by the weekend the story had become the centerpiece of long-running debate over Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) driver assistance systems.
But Tesla, a company that famously dismantled its PR department years ago, broke from its usual silence Monday to push back.
Ashok Elluswamy, vice president of AI software at Tesla and the first engineer hired for the Autopilot team back in 2014, took to X to offer a very different account of what the data showed. “In this case, the driver manually overrode self-driving by pressing the accelerator all the way to 100% of the accel pedal in this residential area,” he wrote. “They reached a speed of 73 mph during the crash, and had the accelerator pressed even after the crash.”
The implication was that whatever system may have been engaged, a human foot on the gas pedal at full throttle was responsible for what ensued, not the car.
Elon Musk amplified Elluswamy’s point on his own X account soon after. “This [allegation] makes no sense. FSD drives slowly through neighborhood streets and this was a high speed crash!” he wrote.
Tesla discontinued Autopilot, its basic driver-assistance system, in January, following a California ruling that the name was misleading to consumers. Full Self-Driving (Supervised), which requires a $99 monthly subscription, handles driver maneuvers including route navigation, steering, lane changes, and parking but still requires the driver to actively supervise the system at all times.
Either way, federal regulators appear determined to come to their own conclusions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed to TechCrunch on Monday it was opening a special crash investigation into the crash. The probe is reportedly the latest in more than 40 such probes the agency has launched into Tesla crashes believed to involve advanced driver-assistance systems in recent years.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said it would present its findings to the local district attorney to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
Whether the Autopilot system was truly active, overridden, or malfunctioning likely won’t be resolved until investigators finish combing through the vehicle’s data logs.
