Postal Service Keeps Going by Tapping Workers’ Retirement

The US Postal Service isn’t about to grind to a halt next year after all, but its long-term finances are still shaky. Postmaster General David Steiner told senators on Wednesday that earlier warnings of a 2027 cash collapse are off the table, largely because of a pause on required retirement fund payments and other cost-cutting moves, per NPR. New estimates now put a potential cash crunch somewhere between 2031 and 2034. That breathing room comes with a catch: USPS is effectively funding operations by delaying what it owes to worker retirement plans, Steiner said, a strategy he and regulators describe as unsustainable.
“The bottom line is that we are out of cash,” Steiner said in written testimony, per Reuters, to a Senate committee. He warned that the agency could run out of operating ?funds in months if it stopped deferring obligations. About 58% of the 18,000 ‌Post Offices ?lose money, per Reuters. The agency, which posted a $2 billion loss last quarter, is raising stamp prices again and pressing Congress for changes to its borrowing limits, retirement obligations, and even its six-day delivery mandate. Lawmakers want detailed projections before signing off. “The Postal Service ?has a broken business model and action is needed by Congress to fix it.”

Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq waver as report of OpenAI IPO delay rattles chip stocks

US stocks were volatile on Friday, as a report of a potential delay to OpenAI’s (OPAI.PVT) IPO added to the headwinds that have whipsawed markets this week.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) hovered near the flat line, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) rose 0.1% after both indexes closed lower Thursday for the fourth straight time this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI), which includes fewer tech names, also rose 0.1% after experiencing sharper losses earlier in the session.
Concerns are growing that the skyrocketing cost of memory and storage components could hit device makers, after Apple (AAPL) raised prices of its MacBooks and iPads. Memory chipmaker Micron’s (MU) stellar earnings showed the squeeze is set to continue.
At the same time, a New York Times report that OpenAI is considering pushing back its mega-IPO until 2027 is also dragging on the appetite for tech.
The AI trade was already under pressure as bets grow on a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike this year. A hot May reading of the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index, kept that prospect alive.

Don’t be fooled by certain Prime Day “deals”:
Curious as to how we select the very best deals? Glad you asked! Our writers and editors are all seasoned experts in their fields. We know a good sale when we see one, and we only include markdowns we believe will save you money. Just because something is “on sale” doesn’t mean you should buy it. Starting prices can be inflated to make discounts seem bigger than they are, and some items may actually cost less at other retailers. Our team knows what to grab and what to hold off on, like the $24 Apple AirTag (you’re better off buying the 4-pack, which brings the price down to just over $22 per tracker). We’ve also found some Lego deals that are up to $15 cheaper at Walmart, and if you’re after the coveted Ninja Slushi, the $200 Amazon deal has already sold out, but you can find the price-matched deal at Best Buy.
Best Amazon Prime Day deals: Top picks
Want to never worry about cleaning your floors again? This deal can help with that, as it vacuums and mops in one run, picking up crumbs, dust, and spills without you lifting a finger. This model features a 46% slimmer design to fit under furniture and reach those hard-to-access spots. The dock empties debris for up to 90 days, refills water, and washes mop pads automatically — so daily cleaning doesn’t mean daily chores.
🔥 Great time to buy: This $400 saving is the lowest price in the last 30 days.
This fan is unlike any you’ve seen before. It’s ultra-powerful and quiet, with a misting system offering steady or interval mist. You can also add ice for an even cooler mist. It’s one of the most versatile fans on the market because it can be used wirelessly, indoors or outdoors, and easily transforms from a pedestal to a tabletop fan. You can enjoy up to 24 hours of cordless runtime at speed one, six hours at speed three and two hours at maximum speed.
🔥 Great time to buy: At $75 off — this is the lowest price in the past 90 days. Plus, we doubt this fan will be this discounted again until after summer.
Need an extra layer for those cooler summer nights? Don’t miss out on this soft fleece zip-up hoodie while it’s nearly 65% off. Amazon’s No. 1 bestseller comes in a range of colors, from classic black to forest green, and has over 60,000 five-star ratings. One shopper said: “I love this jacket. Super comfortable and warm. The jacket has stayed soft after washing several times. It has not faded and the zipper has not had any issues. The fabric on this is quality for the price point. Recommend!”
🔥 Great time to buy: Now further reduced from $10 to just $9, this is the lowest price we’ve seen in the last few months.
Still dealing with a menagerie of remotes every time you want to watch TV? Stop the insanity with this easy and intuitive top-seller (which happens to be the newest model) that can replace ’em all. You’ll be able to effortlessly switch between the news, sports, live TV and your favorite streaming platforms for easy access to millions of shows and movies.
🔥 Great time to buy: At 54% off, this is the lowest price we’ve seen on this streaming stick since the new model launched this past spring.
The Series 11 isn’t as much of a raw value as the lower-cost Apple Watch SE 3 but if you can stretch your budget a bit further, it gets you a bigger display, longer battery life, a slightly thinner design and more advanced health features like an ECG app and hypertension alerts. We’ve seen this deal pop up on several occasions, and it ties the best price we’ve tracked. Just note that there’s no real need to upgrade if you already own an Apple Watch Series 10.
🔥 Great time to buy: We usually see this watch drop to $299, but $279 is the lowest price we’ve seen in months.
We all know sunscreen is vital for protecting our skin from harmful UV rays. Luckily, this lotion has broad-spectrum SPF 70 to offer a strong shield against the sun, so you can enjoy your favorite summer activities with a little more peace of mind.
🔥 Great time to buy: This is the lowest price we’ve seen for this sunscreen in months, and I don’t expect it to drop any further as temperatures keep rising.
This small yet mighty handvac has been scooped up more than 10,000 times in the past month alone, so it’s clearly doing something right. Don’t be fooled by the fact that it weighs just 1.4 pounds; shoppers rave about its strong suction and impressive battery life. Plus, it comes with a built-in crevice tool for reaching tight spaces.
🔥 Great time to buy: I don’t expect this vacuum to drop lower in price anytime soon, as this is its best discount of the past 30 days.
Behold: the coveted Stanley cup. This tumbler features the brand’s FlowState three-position lid, which lets you rotate it to the straw opening, the spout opening or the closed position. The body of each Quencher is made from BPA-free stainless steel and can keep drinks cold for up to 11 hours (two days if they’re iced!). You’re getting a compact carry-along that’s also plenty roomy for your on-the-go hydration needs (it’ll fit five full cups of liquid).
🔥 Great time to buy: This top-selling beverage carrier rarely goes on sale (it’s so popular it doesn’t really need to), but it’s marked down by 50% in certain shades for Prime shoppers.
Save $22 with Prime 🔥
If I were buying AirPods for the first time, the Pro 3 would be the no-brainer pick. You’re getting up to twice the noise reduction, longer battery life (up to eight hours with ANC) and bonus features like heart-rate monitoring and live language translation. Want to know more? Check out Senior Tech Writer Rick Broida’s AirPods Pro 3 review.
“After having heard nothing but raves about these pillows for years, I finally bought a pair to see what all the hype was about,” says Ross. “Fair warning: They come vacuum-sealed, so when you first see them, you’ll think, There’s no way these will be comfortable. But give ’em a few hours, and they fluff up beautifully. I was impressed by how soft yet supportive they feel, and thanks to their breathable construction, I didn’t wake up with sweaty hair. Now I want to replace every pillow in my house with these!”
Psst: Our senior home writer also swears by them — check out her full Beckham Hotel Collection Bed Pillows review for more.
🔥 Great time to buy: These pillows are rarely marked down by 50%, so this is one deal not to sleep on.
This product is what happens when you take a hard cooler’s toughness and durability and wrap it in a shoulder-friendly, soft-sided package. It’s made from the same high-density shell Yeti uses on its toughest gear, so it’ll shrug off scrapes, UV rays and whatever else your weekend throws at it. And unlike budget options, this one’s if fully leak-resistant. Capacity-wise, it holds 7.2 gallons and it weighs under 10 pounds. The wide mouth is easy to load, and instead of a zipper, it uses strong magnets to snap shut. It seals itself like magic and has backup buckles for when things get bumpy.
🔥 Great time to buy: This 30% discount is rare and the lowest price in the past 30 days by far.
Let those legs breathe in style! This popular set is ideal for the heat; it features a loose top to help you stay cool while looking perfectly polished, and shorts with an elastic waistband and pockets. Throw on a pair of crisp white tennies, and you’ve got yourself a new warm-weather uniform.
🔥 Great time to buy: This 46% discount is the lowest price in the last 30 days.
Every kitchen needs a good pair of hand protectors, and our Senior Deals Writer Britt Ross (a former professional baker) prefers oven mitts of the silicone variety, like these. Why? For starters, they’re heat-resistant up to 500°F, and their ribbed design offers better grip than cloth versions — super helpful when pulling piping-hot casserole dishes out of the oven. They’re also water-resistant to help shield your hands from hot splatters, and there’s no shortage of fun colors to choose from.
🔥 Great time to buy: Prices vary, but some hues are on sale for 69% off, and the biggest discount we’ve ever seen is 70%.
If you love iced cold drinks, this slushy machine could be your best investment yet. Choose from Slushy, Juice, Frappe, Shake, or Cocktail settings and make this your all-in-one kitchen appliance for frozen beverages, summer or year-round.
A 48% discount on an Oura Ring is a rare deal we don’t see often. If you want to stay on top of your health and well-being, the wearable is just the ticket. It tracks 50 health metrics, including sleep, activity, stress and heart health. Not sure of your size (the Oura sizes are different from standard ring sizes)? Oura Ring 4 Sizing Kit will give you a perfect fit.
🔥 Great time to buy: This is the lowest price in the past 30 days, and we rarely see a discount this large.
If the thought of making frozen treats at home sounds intimidating, these are for you. Really, they couldn’t be easier to use — just make sure your mugs are frozen for at least 24 hours, then mix up your ice cream base (a recipe book is included). Once your mugs are sufficiently chilled (you want them really cold), you’ll add your base, turn ’em on and they’ll start churning away. Add mix-ins of your choosing via the pour chutes while they’re running, and in about 20 minutes, you’ll have ice cream. Simple, right?
🔥 Great time to buy: This duo is down to $28, which is the lowest price on Amazon we’ve spotted this year.
We love our stick vacuums here at Yahoo; they’re lightweight, flexible and do a mean job of sucking up everything from pet hair to dust bunnies. That said, we also love a multitasker, which is exactly what this 2-in-1 game-changer is. As a vacuum, it uses its impressive 20,000 Pa suction to eliminate crumbs and debris, and at the same time, it acts as a mop to wipe up wet messes. A digital display lets you know when it senses dirt, and you’ll be able to clean for up to an hour per charge. (Yes, this battery-powered blaster is conveniently cordless!)
🔥 Great time to buy: It’s yet to go on sale for less than this all year at Amazon, so save 46% while you can.
“This standout mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide is exceptionally good for dry, sensitive or mature skin,” says Senior Beauty Editor Jennifer Romolini. “It’s packed with ingredients like hyaluronic acid to keep your face looking dewy. EltaMD is both a mineral and chemical SPF, so the texture feels smooth going on and it absorbs fast. It’s also noncomedogenic, fragrance- and oil-free.”
🔥 Great time to buy: This brand doesn’t tend to drop prices this low unless there’s a big sale happening, so snag a few bottles for their best price in months.
This classic tee is made from heavyweight cotton jersey, offering a great mix of comfort, style and durability. Plus, it’s currently 25% off, so now’s the time to stock up on a couple for the season ahead. It also comes in several colors, from khaki green to gray, white and navy.
It has over 90,000 five-star ratings; said one happy customer: “Overall, it’s a reliable, long-lasting T-shirt that delivers great value for the price and is perfect if you want something durable and simple.”
A comfy pair of brand-name sneakers usually costs at least twice as much as these Cloudfoams. If a simple, goes-with-anything kick is what you’re after, you’re in luck. A variety of colors are marked down, but this classic black-and-white style is discounted the deepest, to a mere $38 right now — that’s nearly 50% off.
Commerce Editor Saundra Latham is a big fan too: “I notched 12,000 steps in these the other day, right out of the box, without any pain or rubbing,” she says in her Adidas Cloudfoams review.
Imagine this: You’re stopped at a red light when the car in front of you starts to back up. Before you have time to think, let alone react, bam! They hit your car, but claim you rear-ended them. Unfortunately, these kinds of insurance scams are all too common, and unless you have a dashcam that shows what actually happened, you might be shelling out a lot of dough to make this problem go away.
Thick pants just won’t cut it on those particularly humid days, but these trousers are nice and flowy, making them airy and comfortable. You’ll get a custom fit via the adjustable drawstring waist, and, maybe best of all, they have pockets. They’re also on sale in many of the 20-plus colors they come in, though prices vary.
🔥 Great time to buy: These pants have only dipped this low a few times this year.
Take movie night anywhere with this portable projector. This clever gadget delivers a big-screen viewing experience in a compact, coffee-tumbler-sized design. It comes with a PowerBase Stand that extends battery life up to five hours, making it ideal for backyard movies, camping trips or binge-watching on the go. Plus, its 360-degree adjustable stand automatically aligns the picture, so setting up is practically effortless. Grab it while it’s 15% off!
Best Amazon deals: Rare deals
I (Britt) own this multi-use, nonstick beauty, and it just might become your most-utilized piece of cookware, thanks to its thoughtful design. It took the internet by storm a few years ago and quickly became a favorite of home cooks and celebrities alike. (Selena Gomez did a collaboration with the brand, and Oprah has called it “the kitchen magician.”)
Its ceramic coating is slick and free of PFAS, while the handle smartly doubles as a spoon rest. Speaking of utensils, it comes with a wooden spatula and metal steamer basket that can be used as a colander, and it’s oven-safe up to 450°F for added versatility.
🔥 Great time to buy: It’s not often on sale for this low price, so grab it while it’s over 40% off! (Psst: The durable titanium version is also marked down.)
If you’re an iPhone user who often loses your keys, a set of these Apple AirTags could really save you time. You’ll be able to track your items using the Find My app. They’re also great for travel — you can put one in your suitcase for your vacation. Right now, they’re $10 off, and every little saving adds up.
🔥 Great time to buy: Airtags are rarely discounted, so this $10 savings is the best price in the past 30 days.
Having any kind of robot vacuum will make cleaning your floors a less tedious task — but owning one that doubles as a mop? Now we’re talkin’! Take this high-tech model: It boasts 30,000 Pa suction to lift even the most stubborn debris from carpets and hard surfaces, but it also rinses away sticky residue and spills for an even more thorough cleaning sesh. To top things off? It automatically empties its own dirty water once the job is complete.
🔥 Great time to buy: This is still an investment, even on sale, but at 45% off, it’s as low as we’ve seen it at Amazon in the past year.
No. 1 bestsellers for a reason, these Hanes underoos provide both support and comfort with a design that targets breathability and easy movement. Each boxer brief has a no-ride-up fit and a Comfort Flex waistband, and are made from cotton or a cotton-rich blend, depending on the color. The best part: Cool Comfort technology ensures that you stay fresh and dry even after an entire day of wear.
🔥 Great time to buy: This multi-pack is now at a 90-day low price, and it won’t last long.
This power station is an absolute steal at 50% off right now. With a massive 1070 Wh capacity and multiple ports, it’s great for powering everything from your camping gear to essential appliances during a power outage. Lightweight and reliable, it’s an easy way to stay charged and prepared without breaking the bank.
Even if you’ve never thought of yourself as a “lipstick person,” the ultra-popular, ’90s-chic (and Drew Barrymore fave) Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey will probably change your mind. The creamy, universally flattering formula is made from a blend of blue, red and yellow pigments, so it works for any skin tone. It’s also particularly good for drier, more mature lips since it glides on like a balm and has none of the waxy feel of some lipsticks, and it won’t settle into fine lines.
The shade looks dark in the tube but, once on, it works like a customized tint, lightly staining lips a natural-looking berry hue that’s just a hint or two above bare. As the name suggests, Almost Lipstick makes you look pulled together but not too “done.” Black Honey is a beloved everyday lip color and it’s 30% off for Prime Day.
If you’re serious about homemade frozen treats, the Ninja Swirl takes things to another level. In our ice cream maker testing, it produced exceptionally smooth, scoop-shop-quality ice cream in just minutes, with no need for additional freezing after processing.
We also loved its versatility: Beyond traditional ice cream, it can make soft serve, gelato, sorbet, milkshakes and more, giving it far more flexibility than a typical ice cream maker. It’s undeniably loud and takes up a fair amount of counter space, but the results are impressive enough to justify both.
🔥 Great time to buy: With 20% off, this is the lowest price all year.
Looking for new pajamas for spring and summer? Check out this Hanes two-piece set that features a boxy t-shirt and matching sleep shorts with a comfy stretch waistband. The two-piece has a rare discount and is soft, lightweight, and available in colors like pink, black, and blue.
🔥 Great time to buy: This discount is the lowest in the last 30 days and possibly the lowest we’ve ever seen it.
You’re not gonna need a bigger boat — er, shopping cart — for this Shark, because it weighs just 4 pounds. I (Britt) own this model, and seeing as I’m five feet tall with little upper-body strength, I appreciate how easy it is to move from room to room. I even convinced my parents to get one, and they’re pleased as well.
You’re getting a sleek stick vacuum and a handheld in one, meaning it’s equally as useful for zapping up dust from your floor as it is for cleaning furniture, stairs and even the interior of your car. Plus, you can’t beat its cordless design — isn’t having to find a new outlet every time you switch rooms the worst part of vacuuming? Check out my full Shark review for more.
🔥 Great time to buy: This model often sells out, so the fact that it’s both in stock and down to its best Amazon price in recent memory? Yeah, it’s a no-brainer.
With 20-, 24- and 28-inch bags, this trio is a top seller with over 24,000 Amazon five-star fans. Shoppers rave about the durability: “We’ve had this luggage set for several years now, and it has held up well through numerous airports. … I was on the escalator today, and my carry-on shifted and rolled all the way down… I was horrified, BUT the suitcase got to the bottom uninjured … not sure how, but money well spent.” Choose from a ton of colors, but navy will net you the best deal.
🔥 Great time to buy: This is the lowest this set has gone in a year, so if your suitcases are looking a little worse for the wear, now’s the time to pounce.
Best Amazon deals: Style
With a relaxed fit, flattering V-neck and ultra-soft fabric that resists creasing, this ruffled-cap-sleeve dress is your passport to effortless vacation style. Shoppers say you can pull it out of your suitcase, give it a quick shake and be ready to take off. It comes in 28 colors and sizes small to XXL (prices vary).
🔥 Great time to buy: This is the lowest we’ve seen this classic dress in the last 30 days.
While Kyle Richards is often spotted running around town in sleek dresses and pointy heels, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star clearly values comfort too. So when the 57-year-old actress and TV personality recommended the Wendy loafers on her Amazon Livestream, we took note.
And it’s not just celebrities who are fans of one of the brand’s biggest sellers for women. “I love these shoes,” proclaimed one Mouse maven. “I bought them for a trip I took to Disney World. I walked everywhere, and they were so comfortable.”
🔥 Great time to buy: These favorites are down to $38 — that’s the lowest price we’ve seen in 30 days.
Our readers can’t get enough of these, raving about how comfy they are for everything from puttering around the house to vacation (where those pockets will come in handy). Soft and durable with a wide elastic waistband and a drawstring, one smitten shopper called them “unicorn shorts.” Made with a cotton-poly blend, they come in black, light gray, charcoal and navy in sizes small-XXL. Now that they’re down to $11, we may grab them in every color.
How about fresh polo shirts for summer? This Under Armour essential is up to 38% off and an Amazon No. 1 bestseller. Shoppers say it’s a great value, fits very comfortably and can be worn for everything from playing a round of golf to casual outings and work.
Best Amazon deals: Home
Bye-bye, soggy bath mats: Yahoo readers are adding this ultra-thick, impossibly soft rug to their carts in droves. It’s made of highly absorbent chenille microfiber that’ll soak up excess water from your feet in a jiffy, and its plush texture will feel like heaven after your shower.
⚖️ Fair price: While this isn’t a rare sale (it often hovers around this price), it’s within about a dollar of its best price on Amazon. Ross actually tested this mat out — check out her full Olanly review for more.
Save $6 ⚖️
I (Britt) consider myself a fairly picky sleeper — but my sister is the real-life Princess and the Pea, with even higher standards. So when I tried this blanket at her house, and felt how light yet luxurious it was, I was sold.
I’ve since bought two — one for my own bed and another for the guest room. The comforter is warm yet lightweight, so no night sweats, and it’s incredibly soft with just the right amount of fluff, thanks to box stitching that keeps the filling evenly distributed. It also has loops on the sides, so you can attach it to a duvet cover (perfect for extra warmth in the winter). Best of all, it’s easy to care for; just toss it in the washer and dryer, and it comes out looking and feeling as good as new. At under $35, it’s the kind of find you might end up buying more than once, like I did.
🔥 Great time to buy: All that for a mere $28 (it’s best Amazon price in recent memory)? Yeah, you’ll probably want to buy more than one as well.
This model is far more than just a robot vacuum — it’s also a mop. In fact, it’s the first robovac with FocusJet technology, meaning its two jets spray water at sticky or dried-on floor messes before mopping to loosen up the debris. This makes it much more effective at stain removal, versus mops that simply do one pass-through. And as if that weren’t enough, the roller mop cleans itself as it moves, preventing dirt from spreading and leaving spotless floors. It’s smart too; when it senses carpeting nearby, a shield automatically covers the roller mop to protect your rugs.
As for dirt and crumbs, this bad boy boasts 22,000 Pa suction, which, in plain English, is exceptionally strong. Dust bunnies, you’ve been warned! And speaking of animals, its ZeroTangle technology saves you some work, as it helps prevent hair from wrapping around the brush. Tired of having to go back over those baseboard edges? This vac’s TruEdge feature will take care of those corners via its extended roller design.
Waiting for a robot vacuum to charge can be a pain, but you’ll get 13 minutes of cleaning time after just three minutes of juicing up the battery. Oh, and when it’s finished cleaning, it empties itself, so you don’t have to clean out the collection bin as often.
Best Amazon deals: Beauty
This popular SPF is loved by customers for its broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, 80-minute water resistance, and non-greasy formula with a smooth, matte finish. This twin pack gives you two tubes for just $13, which is $6.50 per tube — significantly less than anywhere else right now.
🔥 Great time to buy: This twin pack rarely goes on sale, and this is the lowest price in 30 days.
These mega-bestselling dual-textured facial toner pads — more than 100,000 have been purchased just this month — are among the top products we’ve found for clearing out clogged pores, evening skin tone and promoting a healthy, clean glow.
Deputy Editor Izabella Zaydenberg is a fan. “I’ve bought these four times — I think it’s the most I’ve ever repurchased any skin care product,” she says. “Unfortunately, I don’t think I can live without them: I ran out a few days ago and my blackheads (which these pads nearly entirely eradicated) decided to come back with a vengeance. It’s no wonder they’re an Amazon bestseller: Each pad gently exfoliates your skin with AHA lactic acid and BHA salicylic acid, leaving your skin truly glass-like.”
🔥 Great time to buy: It hasn’t been over 50% off in the last 30 days, so now’s the time to bag this popular skin care product.
Want to wake up to plumper, glowier skin? Try this dream of a cream, now 30% off for Prime Day. It targets visible signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots with proven antioxidant-rich ingredients including squalane, shea butter and vitamin E to improve skin texture, fade hyperpigmentation and deeply hydrate the ‘dermis overnight. The cream has hundreds of five-star fans, including one who called it “the best moisturizer I have found.”
This bestselling powder foundation contains pigments to help even out unbalanced skin while leaving you looking natural, not like you’ve slathered on a ton of product. The formula self-adjusts to match your skin tone, so you don’t have to worry about it being too warm or too cool as long as you select your closest shade.
And yeah, this stuff really is baked: The pigments are heated on terracotta tiles for 24 hours, giving them a unique consistency that offers the convenience of a powder with the coverage of a cream. They fill in pores and create a smooth finish without settling into fine lines.
Best Amazon deals: Kitchen
This cool contraption is a fave of Yahoo staff and readers alike. Says one editor: “I was skeptical at first. After all, I was used to spending a lot of time crafting breakfast sandwiches. But after using this device once, I was hooked. It pristinely cooked every element of the sandwich — even the egg! The ham was smoky and warm, the cheese was perfectly melted and the egg was the ideal level of gooeyness. Plus, my English muffin didn’t get soggy.”
🔥 Great time to buy: It’s not often on sale, and this is about as low as we can remember seeing it marked down to. Makes an egg-citing gift!
If the area under your sink has become a black hole of cleaning products (along with who knows what else), these slide-out shelves are here to save the day. Because each one has two levels, you’ll maximize space, making it so much easier to find whatever it is you’re looking for. This is one of those items you’ll wonder how you ever lived without — trust me, I (Britt) recently tried it out, and that’s how I feel!
🔥 Great time to buy: The starting price is exaggerated, but I haven’t seen this duo on sale for less all year at Amazon.
Best Amazon deals: Tech
While we’re loving all the deals in our roundup, this No. 1 bestselling 43-inch 4K TV is a standout. At $120, it’s one of the best values we’ve found, as it delivers everything most viewers need: a manageable size, impressive picture quality and all the apps, shows and movies that the Fire TV platform brings to the table.
To experience Bridgerton or The Bear in their full glory, you need top-notch 4K resolution — and this device delivers on any compatible screen. It makes browsing over 300,000 free movies and TV episodes practically effortless. Resident tech-spert Chris McGrawsays of the handy gadget, “It’s one of the easiest streaming devices to use, and one of the most budget-friendly; plus, it’s arguably one of the easiest to set up. Simply plug it into one of your TV’s HDMI ports, and this gadget will immediately search for your home’s Wi-Fi network.”
The HD version is also on sale.
This outlet extender is already marked down a few bucks, but the real benefit is the extra usable outlet space it provides compared to a standard wall outlet. It’s also cheaper than most power strips, and it takes up less space. That makes it a worthwhile deal even at full price.
With four built-in USB chargers (half of which are USB-C for newer gizmos) you never have to spend another minute finding a charger block. Just grab a cable, plug it in, and you’re good to go, whether you’re charging your phone, headphones or smartwatch.
🔥 Great time to buy: This six-outlet extender is down to $10, matching its lowest price on Amazon since its release last fall.

Anthropic’s Mythos mess is only getting worse

It’s been two weeks since Anthropic took its Mythos-class models offline after a Friday evening ultimatum from the Trump administration. The company sprang into action immediately, sending a barrage of executives to Washington, DC. But updates have been suspiciously lacking, with no resolution in sight.
Anthropic declined to comment multiple times this week about the state of the talks, saying there was no news to share. But the lack of news is the story here. After 14 days of high-intensity negotiations, nobody knows when or if Anthropic’s most powerful AI models will come back, let alone whether President Trump could expand his order to more companies with similar tech. And the more days pass without any resolution, the more dire things become — not just for Anthropic, but for the entire US AI industry.
The Trump administration’s June 12th export control order demanded that Anthropic suspend access by “any foreign national” to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 due to security concerns. This ban covered any non-US citizen inside or outside the US, including ones employed by Anthropic. So far, Anthropic has concluded that its only option is to keep these models offline.
It’s not clear exactly why Anthropic and the administration remain at an impasse. One problem may be that there’s no clear framework for applying export controls to AI systems. Most companies making dual-use products — civilian systems with potential defense or military uses — can evaluate them using what’s essentially a checklist during the manufacturing and production process. Anthropic, however, is facing a complicated bureaucracy figuring out how to apply its rules from first principles.
This particular export control process can normally unfold over months, if not years, and conclude before a product reaches market. But as The Verge previously reported, the US Department of Commerce apparently tested Fable 5 before release and raised no complaints. A source familiar with negotiations said Anthropic concluded its models were safe to release. The agency apparently didn’t act until someone (reportedly Amazon CEO Andy Jassy) flagged a method for seemingly breaking Fable 5’s guardrails — at which point the whole process was crunched into a few days.
Katie Moussouris, the founder and CEO of Luta Security, viewed a report about the Fable 5 vulnerability at Anthropic’s request. She thinks it’s significantly overblown. In a blog post, Moussouris detailed how researchers jailbroke guardrails that prevent Fable 5 from finding exploitable security holes, one of the unfettered Mythos 5’s scariest capabilities. The model would refuse requests to review code “for security issues,” but it would accept demands to “fix this code” followed by manual prompts, which could theoretically lead to it flagging vulnerabilities it wasn’t supposed to divulge.
In Moussouris’ eyes, however, this shouldn’t have triggered such a severe governmental action and is in fact an essential tool for AI coding. “Defenders need to be able to ask AI to fix the bugs in a file, explain why the fix matters, and write tests that confirm the patch works,” she wrote. “That is not a guardrail bypass. It is the most valuable thing an AI model can do for defensive security: executing the find, fix, and test loop defenders run every day.”
In the past week, Anthropic cofounder Tom Brown has replaced CEO Dario Amodei in negotiations with the Trump administration, alongside Sarah Heck, the company’s public policy chief, Wired reported. But still, negotiations seem to be slow-moving, if there’s any progress being made at all.
Whatever the reasons for the delay, it’s been a serious hit to Anthropic. Before the protracted negotiations, Anthropic was seen as the rare AI company with a path to profitability. Its Mythos-class models, whose input tokens sell for double the cost of its lower-powered Opus 4.8, were supposed to boost its revenue ahead of an upcoming IPO. Mythos’ cybersecurity prowess even appeared to be thawing relations with the Trump administration after months of legal and rhetorical combat.
Anthropic needs the revenue from Mythos to pay for all the compute it’s secured recently, including a deal to pay SpaceX $15 billion per year for access to its data centers, as well as its public image before the IPO. Two of Anthropic’s largest current shareholders — Google and Amazon — have tried to carefully stay on Trump’s good side, so they’re likely not happy either.
Meanwhile, the glacial negotiations have also created a power vacuum in the global AI market, not only because of the Mythos shutdown, but because the US government has signaled a willingness to lock down American AI systems it deems risky — and several US companies, including OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, have models that may pose similar risks to Mythos. Countries have started calling for non-American AI. As Alex Stamos, cybersecurity expert and chief product officer at Corridor, told The Verge last week, “One of America’s champions is being kneecapped by the US government while we’re in a race with the Chinese. It’s just incredibly stupid.”
As the days wear on, the situation only worsens for these companies. Their models inch closer to Mythos-level capabilities that could trigger an export control order — in fact, OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 Cyber just beat Mythos 5 on certain benchmarks, and the Trump administration reportedly just asked OpenAI to delay the release of GPT-5.6 over security concerns, with plans for the government to approve each customer one by one. Anthropic and OpenAI’s IPOs are both approaching. And every day, China is pulling further ahead in the AI race.
Ironically, the administration’s order comes after months of pushing to dismantle AI safeguards and regulation — it’s one of the first sweeping regulatory decisions President Trump has made. But a whole host of cybersecurity leaders have come together to say that if regulation has to happen, this isn’t the way to do it. For all the Trump administration’s vows to roll back Biden-era AI regulation, it seems like, in many ways, it’s gained that ground back — and then some.

Trump eases pressure on Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh as inflation tops 4%

With inflation topping 4%, the Trump administration is easing off its long-standing calls for the Federal Reserve to immediately cut interest rates. That is giving new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh an extended political grace period as he deals with a challenging economic environment, but underscores the depth of the pushback he could face if the mercurial president changes his mind.
President Donald Trump said as recently as Wednesday that he wants the Fed to cut rates. Meanwhile several of the president’s top economic advisors have in recent interviews and writing stopped short of calling for near-term rate cuts, as they had before the Iran war sent some prices surging and Trump installed Warsh as the new Fed chairman.
What might look like division is really an indication that the Trump-Warsh relationship has shifted the political gravity of the Trump administration, a White House official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe behind-the-scenes conversations.
“I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a shift in policy, or how we’re seeing the data,” the official said. Rather, ”personnel is big for this president,” the official said. Trump has “confidence and faith” in Warsh and so will let him make decisions that he didn’t entrust to Jerome Powell, the prior chair.
“Since Epic Fury and since Warsh getting in there, I think the president’s position is a lot more nuanced than ‘there need to be rate cuts,'” the official said, adding that there is “no daylight” between the president and his advisors.
Inflation rose by 4.1% in the year ending in May, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis data released Thursday. The Fed wants that measure, personal consumption expenditures, to be at 2%.
Elevated energy prices stemming from the war contributed significantly to the elevated reading. Taking them out along with volatile food prices, so-called core inflation rose 3.4%.
Warsh said last week the Fed was keeping a close eye on data like that. “The Fed will deliver price stability,” he said. He and the Fed’s committee of interest rates voters opted to keep interest rates steady and end a longstanding plan that biased the Fed toward interest-rate cuts.
Nearly half of the Fed’s policymakers said in projections released last week that they expected interest rates to go up this year. Markets now see a 79% chance of a rate increase by the end of December, according to CME FedWatch on Friday, and have no expectation of a cut.
White House trade advisor Peter Navarro wrote in an opinion essay Thursday that the new inflation data makes a “hold-steady case” for the Fed.
Navarro had previously called for rate cuts. In an email to CNBC, he said his view that the Fed should now hold rates was consistent with his past arguments and the president’s current position. His point in the essay was that it was “foolish” now to consider rate increases, he said.
“Rates should be lower and they would’ve been lower if the Fed had done the right thing over the past year,” Navarro said in the email.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday said at an event in New York that Warsh will “be independent and do what he wants.” In an interview the next morning on CNBC, Bessent declined to say whether the Fed should cut. But people should “keep an open mind,” he said.
“Let’s see what inflation looks like on the other side of” the Iran conflict, Bessent said.
Some in the markets heard Bessent as indicating he has come around to rate increases under Warsh.
“On the Fed, I heard a green-light to hike,” Neil Dutta, head of economics at Renaissance Macro Research, wrote in a note to his clients Tuesday.
The Treasury Department declined to comment on how Bessent’s views line up with Trump’s.
Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, has also suggested that he supports a pause from the Fed under Warsh. “The first meeting, you want to kind of get your feet on the ground and hold steady,” Hassett said on CNBC on Tuesday.
Trump has said he wants Warsh to “do whatever he wants” and “be totally independent.”
But on Wednesday the president returned to his calls for interest-rate cuts. “We need low interest rates. Low interest rates will solve everything, will solve that now,” Trump said at an Oval Office event.
Energy prices have fallen in the wake of a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the international waterway that has become a chokepoint for global oil supplies. The average price of a gallon of gas in the U.S. was $3.90 on Friday, down 58 cents from a month ago, according to AAA.
But with the Middle East still unstable, it isn’t clear how durable price declines will be or what exactly the inflation picture will look like when the Fed meets next in late July. Iranian forces attacked a cargo ship in the strait Thursday.
All that means extended patience will be required of Warsh. The White House said that is just what’s being provided.
“President Trump and administration officials have all consistently said the same thing: everyone has confidence in Chairman Kevin Warsh and, despite temporary disruptions to energy markets, the Trump administration’s supply-side policies are cooling inflation to pave the way for interest rate cuts,” White House spokesman Kush Desai told CNBC.

Apple, Micron, OpenAI and A.I.’s Rough Summer

Andrew here. We’re following the ongoing wild ambitions in the A.I. race to go public. The latest: Sam Altman appears to be drawing a hard line, wanting a valuation of at least $1 trillion for OpenAI’s stock market debut.
Separately, Wall Street is dissecting a huge shake-up in JPMorgan Chase’s succession contest, with Marianne Lake, a longtime contender to succeed Jamie Dimon as C.E.O., retiring. Two other insiders, Doug Petno and Troy Rohrbaugh, were promoted to co-president, making it a two-man race. (Only a few years ago, it was a two-woman race: Lake and Jenn Piepszak.)
The critical detail everyone is whispering about: the age gap. Rohrbaugh, 56, is five years younger than Petno. When you’re planning for someone to replace a seminal leader like Dimon for the long term, that extra runway might just tell us how this final lap will play out.
A bearish pivot
Market volatility is jolting artificial intelligence bellwethers again on Friday as investors in the sector reckon with a tough new economic reality.
